As a .world user, if you read this, it's back up ^^

[–] Railcar8095@lemmy.world 8 points 3 days ago

I have a NSFW account and I thought I was posting from that when I saw this haha

[–] Gladaed@feddit.org 5 points 3 days ago

The post was federated to .world. I think you aeing it shows that is back up and running.

[–] homes@piefed.world 103 points 4 days ago (1 children)

It looks like they just had a brief backend resource outage. It appears to be back up and fully accessible now.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

...........................................why?

[–] drath@lemmy.drath.ru 21 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (1 children)

Selfhosting, yeah!

actually selfhosting lemmy kinda sucks don't bother unless you have to

[–] fedd@lemmy.ml 4 points 3 days ago (2 children)

do you mind expanding on why it sucks?

I don't selfhost lemmy, but I was thinking about it

[–] drath@lemmy.drath.ru 8 points 3 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Federation is kinda clunky, there is no way to see content posted before you federated, same with upvotes, so top of all time is different across communities. But most annoying of all is that to see the communities you have to paste the full link into search. Big instances can rely on some of the users doing it but for single user instance you have to go to bigger instances and see their list of communities and copy-paste the links into your instance search bar, otherwise you cant see any new posts from those.

[–] Itwasntme223@discuss.online 6 points 3 days ago

In my own experience, it's clunky and can be a pain to get running, even when using a docker. The Federation also can be a bit iffy at times.

.world user here. What did I miss now? Is it possible to migrate my account to another instance?

[–] njm1314@lemmy.world 5 points 3 days ago

Just make a new account. Its not like there is any advantage to migrating an account.

[–] floquant@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 3 days ago (2 children)

Nope, unless maybe if you run your own or are friends with an admin.

[–] FalschgeldFurkan@lemmy.world 7 points 3 days ago (1 children)

...but what exactly happened? Do I even need to switch...?

[–] 1984@lemmy.today 11 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (1 children)

If you sort comments by upvotes in your app, you will see what happened as the top comment. But it was a temporary problem, no need to panic for that reason.

But I agree with others, users should spread out to more instances to help keep the fediverse healthy and other instances active. Otherwise we encourage Reddit 2.0.

I have never used lemmy.world myself, because it goes against the fediverse idea to flock together on the same instance.

[–] FalschgeldFurkan@lemmy.world 3 points 3 days ago (2 children)

I see, thanks! And I agree with you. I just picked .world bcs, being a former Reddit user, I had no idea where to get started and just picked one...

Same here, but it was really easy to just make a new account on a new instance. You never know when your instance will go down (like Lemmy NSFW or, more recently, piefed.social) so you might as well just make a new one and try not to get too attached to any particular iteration of your account. And besides, karma actually means nothing here!

[–] Mannimarco@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 3 days ago

I did the same, and then later I made a new account

[–] PolarKraken@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 3 days ago

Isn't there an export / import feature to aid in moving to a different instance?

[–] hperrin@lemmy.ca 37 points 4 days ago (4 children)

Lemmy.world is gone? What happened/is happening?

[–] Ategon@programming.dev 60 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

outbound federation was down here for a bit. meme is kinda out of context now since it's working again lol

[–] spongebue@lemmy.world 36 points 4 days ago (2 children)
[–] Klear@quokk.au 20 points 4 days ago (1 children)

You'll be stone dead in a moment.

[–] ozymandias117@lemmy.world 16 points 4 days ago (1 children)

I don't want to go in the cart!

[–] DetachablePianist@lemmy.world 9 points 4 days ago

I feel happy!

[–] Vex_Detrause@lemmy.ca 3 points 4 days ago

Are you sure?

[–] Butterphinger@lemmy.zip 9 points 4 days ago

sigh

what is it this time?

[–] schnurrito@discuss.tchncs.de 7 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Right now I can access it. They seem to have a status page https://fhf-lemmyworld.instatus.com/ that says that earlier today there were some problems for approximately an hour? I don't have more information than that.

[–] eah@programming.dev 6 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

It may be my own instance which is having trouble. The past 3 days of posts to !programmer_humor@programming.dev have sub-100 points which suggests posts aren't getting broadcast to everyone else.

Edit: looks like it's fixed now. !meta@programming.dev

Becoming tribal about which instance someone registered to is pretty hilarious.

"Rascists are irrational and terrible bigots, and also Lemmy.world people are inhuman scum who should be wiped out." - They think without the barest hint of self awareness or irony.

[–] Cethin@lemmy.zip 18 points 3 days ago (1 children)

People have pretty valid issues with the way the team runs Lemmy.world. It's nothing against the users though. They were just lazy or whatever and just chose the largest instance, giving the staff there power, causing them to behave as if they run the fediverse. It's honestly an issue that people don't spread out more. If you're a Lemmy.world user and reading this, you should consider migrating. It isn't that hard and keeps Lemmy from becoming Reddit 2.0 by ensuring no instance has too much control.

Go to Settings, Export

Pick a new server, make the account, go to Settings, Import

For what server, look down the list of posts/comments in anything in here and start clicking the fediverse icon to swap to their instance and see how it is.

Or check the list https://join-lemmy.org/instances

[–] Allero@lemmy.today 22 points 3 days ago

I find it cute as long as people are just fooling around, joking about why THEIR same instance is the best. I can play that!

But when people are seriously like "all people from .ml/.world/whatever are scum", this is where it gets weird.

Man I just use this because Reddit is bullshit. What's wrong with lemmy.world?

[–] Cethin@lemmy.zip 13 points 3 days ago

For the same reasons Reddit sucks. They got too large and they think they're in charge of Lemmy now. The staff there have a lot of issues, and they think they can use their power to control Lemmy. I'd recommend leaving, because users being spread out is what makes Lemmy resistant to the issues that made Reddit horrible. It's fairly easy to change instances.

[–] Drewfro66@lemmygrad.ml 1 points 3 days ago

A lot of people will speculate and exaggerate and blow little things out of proportion. I don't like Lemmy.world because they are Anticommunist as a policy. That's about it.

They're (albeit Liberal) Zionists, they prosecute stuff like "Uyghur genocide denial" that is like 5-year-old propaganda that should be able to be dismissed with the benefit of hindsight.

Leftist instances have the forthrightness to just say "If you're a reactionary we'll ban you", but Liberals - like the Lemmy.world admins and moderators - have to hide behind a smokescreen of Socialists breaking technical rules - when, say, a Zionist denying the Palestinian genocide wouldn't get the same reaction.
