You know what? I'm gonna not buy it even harder.

[–] FartMaster69@lemmy.dbzer0.com 105 points 5 days ago

As if I needed another reason to not get one…

[–] Doctacosa@piefed.ca 78 points 4 days ago (1 children)

I remember getting the 3DS on launch day. It was considered expensive at the time, people complained, sales were sluggish, it got a price cut within six months, and I was given various digital goodies to make up for it.

Now, people buying the console more than a year after launch are getting a price increase instead. What an insane time to live in.

[–] otp@sh.itjust.works 21 points 4 days ago (2 children)

Video game console prices have never gone up like they have in the last decade. Never since video games were invented.

While some consoles have been more expensive on launch when adjusting for inflation, they usually plummeted in price shortly thereafter.

It's a uniquely bad time in history to be a console gamer.

There's never been a time where it's been so easy to disillusion investors to the extent that you convince them that buying the entire world's supply of hardware, even when you have nowhere to plug it in, is a great decision.

[–] smeg@feddit.uk 5 points 4 days ago (1 children)

On the other hand it's never been a better time to be a PC player. I pick up multiple free games every day. I have decades of classics I can emulate. I have vast choices of the hardware I can use. I use Proton to run games flawlessly on an OS they were never designed for, and I can even use something like GameNative to run them on the phone I've already got in my pocket!

[–] RightHandOfIkaros@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

Yeah, except all the parts to build even a midrange PC have become unaffordable.

I am still on my GTX 1080 Ti (an EVGA FTW3 which I actually got on discount for $400 about a year after it launched) waiting for hardware I can actually afford that gives an upgrade worth spending the money for it. Nearly $1000 USD for even just a 70 series card isn't worth it at all.

[–] smeg@feddit.uk 1 points 2 days ago

I've never tried a game I couldn't play on my Steam Deck, or even on the desktop I built a decade ago. I don't really play brand-new games, but I've got so many unplayed classics that I don't need new hardware.

[–] Harrk@lemmy.world 24 points 4 days ago (3 children)

As gaming becomes more and more expensive I’ve found myself going back to retro. Just ain’t enough money left after everything else has gone up to spend on gaming anymore.

[–] Appoxo@lemmy.dbzer0.com 8 points 4 days ago

Not like Nintendo games are exactly cheap or becoming cheaper 2nd hand

[–] njm1314@lemmy.world 6 points 4 days ago

Same here. I've been emulating some old PlayStation 1 games lately and man I forgot how fucking awesome Breath of Fire 3 was.

Nothing like paying even $50 more to play games that you've already played for the last 15 to 20 years and also repaying for those games, spending between $50 and $70 fucking dollars US for the privilege.

Nintendo have lost their goddamn minds.

Don't bother buying a Switch or a Switch 2 if you've already got a gaming PC. Just emulate that shit.

[–] tacosanonymous@mander.xyz 16 points 4 days ago (3 children)

I’m not buying anything Nintendo. I would love for you to tell me how and where to emulate switch 2.

[–] carotte@lemmy.blahaj.zone 48 points 5 days ago (1 children)

it’s called the Switch 2 because people who aren’t rich have to Switch 2 a different hobby

[–] Fredselfish@lemmy.world 7 points 4 days ago (1 children)

With this economy I just wait until this shows up in a pawn shop somewhere. Or more likely fuck buying that have plenty of PC games to play.

[–] Cethin@lemmy.zip 5 points 4 days ago (2 children)

Their games never drop in price, and they are priced higher than anyone else. Don't buy this shit ever. If you really want, emulate it. That's the closest you should get to it. (Even then, is there anything worth it? There are too many amazing PC games already. I don't need to play the fairly generic stuff Nintendo makes.)

[–] Eyro_Elloyn@lemmy.zip 2 points 1 day ago

Another option if you already own the console is the library. I was shocked at how niche some of the games they have are.

[–] 123@programming.dev 2 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

A few titles actually went in clearance at Costco which is somewhat rare:

https://kotaku.com/costco-sale-switch-2-games-cheap-pokemon-2000688792

Prices ending in 97 at that store indicate they wanted to get rid of the inventory to make room for other items, not sure the reasoning for it though, could be just newer games for the same system (since it also varies by location).

Edit: Looks like Walmart had a similar sale ($35-$40) for even more titles including bananza, so something is definitely different when compared to previous Nintendo pricing deals with retailers.

[–] ieatpwns@lemmy.world 39 points 4 days ago (7 children)

+$50 so they can sell you starfox for a THIRD time

[–] FlashMobOfOne@lemmy.world 8 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

This is relevant.

I was looking at the exclusive titles for Switch 2... and it's beyond me to understand why I need another Mario Kart or Smash Bros, especially with that dumbass entry price.

[–] WindyRebel@lemmy.world 6 points 4 days ago (2 children)

I haven’t played StarFox since the SNES, so I’m actually stoked for this. I’m probably a rarity though.

[–] TastyWheat@lemmy.world 3 points 3 days ago

I'm in the same boat. Loved the original SNES game but never played SF64. I might just end up getting the new one if it reviews well

The biggest surprise is they gave people an almost 4 month heads up. Still won't be getting one, not enough games I'm interested in and they seem to be losing their touch with the string of mediocre titles they've been releasing.

[–] caseofthematts@lemmy.world 4 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (2 children)

Perhaps they're betting on people that were holding out on a Switch 2 will see this as their only opportunity to grab one, since it ain't getting cheaper.

Yeah, this definitely isn't connected to the shareholders demanding price increases "to protect margins." No, its market conditions, obviously! Nothing to do with the shareholders!

https://www.bloomberg.com/news/newsletters/2026-05-06/nintendo-switch-2-price-hike-in-spotlight-ahead-of-earnings

What if we sell just a couple dozen really expensive devices. . ?

[–] HeyJoe@lemmy.world 27 points 5 days ago

Yeah, that will fix things.

[–] Keshara@piefed.blahaj.zone 25 points 5 days ago (1 children)

It's already ridiculously expensive for what it is. $700 in store here in Australia

[–] thatKamGuy@sh.itjust.works 7 points 4 days ago (5 children)

$700 AUD is about equivalent, given its $449 USD (before sales tax, their version of the GST).

449 x $1.38 ForEx ~$620. +10% GST = $682.

The only way you could get it for a better price would be to buy it directly from Japan, where it’s only ~¥49,980 ($440 AUD).

12GB DDR5 for just 50€ extra? Sounds kind of ok if we could get half of the RAM out and put it into PCs...

But maybe they should consider reviving the 3DS as it only used 128MB (they could produce 90x 3DS for a Switch 2)

Market conditions: Xbox and Sony already did it in anticipation of GTA 6

[–] ampersandrew@lemmy.world 11 points 5 days ago (4 children)

In response to component price increases.

Fuck that. First Nintendo console in a long time that I don't give a shit about.

Put fucking games on the carts and we will talk.

[–] atrielienz@lemmy.world 11 points 4 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (1 children)

Funny that they waited to raise the price until after the tariffs were decided to be illegal.

[–] Zoomboingding@lemmy.world 9 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago) (1 children)

Probably more to do with RAM prices in this case. They already bumped the price up for tariffs.

I remember when companies wanted you to be locked into their ecosystem and buy their games so much they'd lose money on the console. "Loss leader".

[–] garretble@lemmy.world 20 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago) (1 children)

That was never Nintendo, to be fair. They’ve never really played that game like Sony and MS did.

[–] DacoTaco@lemmy.world 11 points 4 days ago

Exactly, their hardware was usually always off the shelf parts making them cheap to make. Nes? Custom 6503. Gameboy? Custom z90 with a off the shelf dmg screen. The gba ? Its carts can be made of like 4 different type of rom.chips depending on what was cheapest and sram also came in different flavours through its life time. Gamecube/wii/wiiu? Sure was a ppc that was already designed. Switch? Same nvidia x1 that was inside some tablets and the nvidia shield.

Its what nintendo does and the engineering needed for it is on a different level imo

Wages are not up. I'm not going to spend that much money on a redundant toy. Pay me more then I'll think about it.
