Y'all still payin for Netflix?

[–] jjlinux@lemmy.zip 1 points 19 minutes ago

I came in only to ask that same question. Thanks.

[–] zergtoshi@lemmy.world 5 points 54 minutes ago

I wish I could cancel my subscription, alas I have none.

[–] projektilski@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 15 minutes ago

I plan to pirate even more :D

[–] Arancello@aussie.zone 11 points 3 hours ago (1 children)

There is a great episode on the podcast “99% invisible” called “enshitification “ that precisely describes this action. Every device or ‘service’ will do this once they feel they have you locked in. The case study was about John Deere and Apple, but applies here too. Interesting that John Deere settled their case and had to pay $99 million.

[–] ripcord@lemmy.world 3 points 2 hours ago (1 children)

Sounds like a really interesting concept that podcast invented

[–] anon_8675309@lemmy.world 3 points 26 minutes ago* (last edited 22 minutes ago)

Surely they gave credit where credit is due.

Edit: indeed they did.

Hey ! Looks ! This thing it's called jellyfin. It's installed on something that's called Truenas. It's doing the same thing as netflix.

[–] W98BSoD@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 31 minutes ago

There’s also Emby and Plex.

[–] Jesus_666@lemmy.world 37 points 4 hours ago (1 children)

That's just misinformation. I put some shows onto a Jellyfin instance and not a single one has disappeared. Not even an email about something being dropped soon. So that's a core part of the Netflix experience you're just not getting with Jellyfin.

Heck, it doesn't even randomly force me to watch in 1080p or 720p despite being on the 4K plan and the show/movie being available in 4K. It's like Jellyfin isn't even trying.

[–] CucumberFetish@lemmy.dbzer0.com 12 points 2 hours ago

The last drop in the bucket for me was when Jellyfin didn't show any ads.

[–] TankovayaDiviziya@lemmy.world 13 points 5 hours ago

I'm glad I unsubscribed to Netflix.

[–] Lost_My_Mind@lemmy.world 36 points 7 hours ago* (last edited 7 hours ago) (2 children)

Netflix plan to bring even more ads to even more parts of it's service.....and I plan to continue not being a customer.

[–] osanna@lemmy.vg 6 points 6 hours ago

yarrrrrrrrrr

[–] Mihies@programming.dev 1 points 5 hours ago (2 children)

TBH it's just for their ad tier.

[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 10 points 4 hours ago* (last edited 4 hours ago) (2 children)

Back in the day, the "ad tier" for shit was free and you only paid money to not have ads at all.

[–] Mihies@programming.dev 1 points 42 minutes ago

You still pay money to have no ads at all 🙃

[–] docus@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 3 hours ago (1 children)

Back in my days they had no ad tier, and their prices were reasonable.

[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 0 points 3 hours ago

Damn, how old are you that you remember when TV didn't have ads?

[–] darkmogool@feddit.org 2 points 3 hours ago
[–] psx_crab@lemmy.zip 6 points 5 hours ago (1 children)

It would be hilarious if all those company killed by streaming platform suddenly crawl back up from hell and make physical rental widely available again.

Morons… cutting off one’s nose to spite one’s face.

[–] Rothe@piefed.social 2 points 4 hours ago

The morons are the people willing to pay for ads. There is seemingly an endless supply of them because these kinds of subscriptions are very popular.

[–] TeddE@lemmy.world 5 points 6 hours ago

Really itching to try that golden goose recipe.

[–] ZeroCool@piefed.ca 83 points 9 hours ago (2 children)

Clips is a TikTok-like vertical video stream where users can scroll through excerpts from Netflix series, films, and specials, as well as trailers for upcoming titles.

[

[–] MimicJar@lemmy.world 53 points 9 hours ago (3 children)

Disney+ has "Verts". It's fucking ridiculous.

It's wild to watch these companies chase after one another with no thought. Just "TikTok is popular! Can we be TikTok?!?!???"

You have a product. Do that product well. Fuck!

[–] W98BSoD@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 32 minutes ago (1 children)

I mean, do they have to fuck or is that optional?

[–] jjlinux@lemmy.zip 1 points 14 minutes ago

You get 2 chances at guessing the correct answer tot hat.

[–] Flower@sh.itjust.works 2 points 3 hours ago

CEOs are really herd animals, always looking what the other guy is doing and living in a continuous fear of missing out the next big thing. It sure doesn't help with shareholders breathing down their neck pushing for short term profit and growth.

[–] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 4 points 5 hours ago (2 children)

I mean, I agree, but at the same time you've got to be trying to keep up or your business dies. Like, if blockbuster has tried to compete with Netflix instead of ignoring it, we'd still have blockbuster

[–] 13igTyme@piefed.social 9 points 5 hours ago (1 children)

Block buster didn't have ads turning the movie, just some trailers you could skip. Plus when I went to block buster we'd find something(s) and go home an watch it. Not this scroll through a mountain of the same crap in different categories just to maybe find something after a much longer period of time.

Fuck we had it good with blockbuster.

[–] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 1 points 4 hours ago* (last edited 4 hours ago)

we also had ads in the store. you got good at tuning them out. i remember gettting lost trying to find a movie because i forgot we had an animated section. first day at the new store.

[–] MimicJar@lemmy.world 3 points 4 hours ago (1 children)

Sure, but is this actually a good idea?

The argument would be that these "short form videos" improve discoverability. I can't speak for Netflix (since I'm not subscribed), but I am subscribed to Disney+. I completely agree that the discoverability in the Disney+ app is bad. But I'm also subscribed to Hulu, which is now owned (fully) by Disney. The discoverability in Hulu is actually pretty good.

Everything that is "Disney+ Exclusive" is only available using Disney+. Everything that is "Hulu Exclusive" is available on both Hulu and Disney+. So Disney+ has everything I want, but the app sucks.

The plan is by the end of 2026 to turn down the Hulu app and only use the Disney+ app. So, is Disney improving the Disney+ app? Nope, they're adding "Verts".

This is what bothers me. If you have an interesting idea to improve your app, do that. If you're just chasing the current flavor of the week, stop. Spend that time doing something useful.

[–] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 2 points 3 hours ago

i think the verts is more competing with youtube's competing with tiktok, yeah. but i also think i'm very much not the target audience. i'm a long form video. if i'm going to give the filmmaker the respect of my time, give me the respect of at least thirty minutes of plot dammit. or at least thirty minutes of michael bay level explosions and a bowl of popcorn. fill me with bread and send in the clowns dammit. fuck dammit i had to mention bread. the baker gets to the bakery in an hour i bet i could pinch a loaf. look what you've done.

Enshittification is inevitable. The only variable is how long it takes.

Cancel your subscription & come over to the Dark Side! (I do recommend learning some basics beforehand though)

[–] m33@lemmy.zip 3 points 3 hours ago

Yes that. Come to the dark side, we have 🍪

The fact that they keep pushing the envelope with more and more ads and higher costs show that people are willing to go along with it. That is sad to think about

[–] Passerby6497@lemmy.world 10 points 6 hours ago* (last edited 6 hours ago) (1 children)

No one should be surprised, cable tv played out the same way. Got you hooked on content and then started shoving ads in so often they sped up credits or ran the credits under the commercial break to squeeze just a biiiiiit more out of you

[–] FudgyMcTubbs@lemmy.world 1 points 1 hour ago

Then they sped up the actual tv shows. It's crazy, and they got away with it.

[–] melfie@lemmy.zip 13 points 8 hours ago
[–] reddig33@lemmy.world 19 points 9 hours ago

Good thing I don’t have Netflix then.

[–] Archangel1313@lemmy.ca 6 points 8 hours ago

This is why I prefer the open seas. Arrr, me matey! A pirate's life for me!

[–] pelespirit@sh.itjust.works 7 points 9 hours ago

They're already doing this lol.

Netflix also plans to introduce “personalized ad loads and frequency caps that dynamically adjust the ads our members see, based on their viewing behaviors.” Netflix hasn’t shared any more details about how this could work. The big question is whether streaming more on Netflix could result in fewer ads per episode or film.
