What search engines and networks do y'all visit when searching for what you need? The search engines on fmhy.net just don't return the right results and I have to !s on a network's channel to find out...

EDIT: It seems like I just got unlucky, https://xdcc-search.com/ works mostly, atleast for rizon

Same - have to !s Just gotta overcome the embarrassment

I don't think there can be a good search engine due to bots constantly reorganizing their offerings instead of just incrementing their list to add a new package.

But if anyone does know a good index that can keep up with the bot's changes, I'd appreciate it as well.

Whats !s ? Search command in the chat?

[–] dry_water@programming.dev 1 points 5 days ago

Yup, it really depends on the bot, it can be !s , !search , @search and so on, depends on the person who created the bot ..

[–] dry_water@programming.dev 1 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Okay, thanks for confirming.

Coming to networks, the ones mentioned on https://xdcc-search.com/networks should be good right? Have only been to rizon and irchighway so far.

I primarily use xdcc.eu and download from #beast-xdcc, #elitewarez, #moviegods (irc.abjects.net), the.source (irc.scenep2p.net), #elitewarez (irc.rizon.net), and sometimes #zombie-warez (irc.abandoned-irc.net)

That engine gives wrong results half the time, bots offerings keep changing I guess...

I've only had wrong IDs <=10%.

Maybe I got lucky, or it changed recently. Or you got unlucky.

It seems like I just got unlucky!

I use the search engine to determine which network and channel has what I want. Usually it's the same bot too. Then if the send command offers the wrong item, I just have to !s to figure out what the current pack # is.

I have three bookmarked, the first also being a search bookmark, and listed there and works for me.

XDCC never sent me anything on scenep2p. Dunno what's wrong there, regarding networking or something. It works fine on multiple other networks.

[–] MEtrINeS@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Passive vs active bots? I stopped using xdcc because nowadays lots of networks stopped using the right naming for passive/active bots. However in scenep2p the bots seems to be well named.

[–] dry_water@programming.dev 1 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I have no idea what you mean by passive/active bots. I have heard of passive and active DCC but not this.

I don't look at the bots' names, just do a !s and get the xdcc command sent as a private notice

[–] MEtrINeS@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I have heard of passive and active DCC but not this.

Well... it's the same thing.

An active bot will initiate the connection, a passive will wait for you to connect. If you are under NAT then the active bot won't be able to connect to start the transfer and the transfer will just die without you knowing.

The passive bots are identified with a 'p' in the name. Usually between pipes: |p|

Unfortunately more and more channels don't indicate if the bots are passive or active. This fucks up the user experience, specially if you are in queue for hours and then the transfer fails. I stopped using xdcc because of this. There are still some good channels though...

Try to use a passive bot and see if it helps.

[–] dry_water@programming.dev 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

All the bots I've come across are passive so far, and not labeled ¯\(ツ)

[–] MEtrINeS@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

But you are not the OP that complained about never getting anything from the bots 😏

[–] dry_water@programming.dev 1 points 22 hours ago (1 children)

You know the answer and still ask? It's been 5 days since I asked the question, you folks are very cool, thanks a bunch for making it possible for me to use xdcc

[–] MEtrINeS@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

You know the answer and still ask?

WTF are you talking about? I didn't ask anything. I was trying to help the fellow that said he couldn't download shit from scenep2p while he could from other networks.

[–] dry_water@programming.dev 1 points 18 hours ago

Oh I got confused never mind.. Apologeez

[–] dry_water@programming.dev 1 points 5 days ago

You need to be registered on the network to be able to PM the bots, the network supports ssl and ircv3 as far as I can see. I am able to get files via xdcc.
