Rules (2024-08-30)

  1. This is an English-language community. Comments should be in English. Posts can link to non-English news sources when providing a full-text translation in the post description. Automated translations are fine, as long as they don't overly distort the content.
  2. No links to misinformation or commercial advertising. When you post outdated/historic articles, add the year of publication to the post title. Infographics must include a source and a year of creation; if possible, also provide a link to the source.
  3. Be kind to each other, and argue in good faith. Don't post direct insults nor disrespectful and condescending comments. Don't troll nor incite hatred. Don't look for novel argumentation strategies at Wikipedia's List of fallacies.
  4. No bigotry, sexism, racism, antisemitism, islamophobia, dehumanization of minorities, or glorification of National Socialism. We follow German law; don't question the statehood of Israel.
  5. Be the signal, not the noise: Strive to post insightful comments. Add "/s" when you're being sarcastic (and don't use it to break rule no. 3).
  6. If you link to paywalled information, please provide also a link to a freely available archived version. Alternatively, try to find a different source.
  7. Light-hearted content, memes, and posts about your European everyday belong in other communities.
  8. Don't evade bans. If we notice ban evasion, that will result in a permanent ban for all the accounts we can associate with you.
  9. No posts linking to speculative reporting about ongoing events with unclear backgrounds. Please wait at least 12 hours. (E.g., do not post breathless reporting on an ongoing terror attack.)
  10. Always provide context with posts: Don't post uncontextualized images or videos, and don't start discussions without giving some context first.

(This list may get expanded as necessary.)

Posts that link to the following sources will be removed

Unless they're the only sources, please also avoid The Sun, Daily Mail, any "thinktank" type organization, and non-Lemmy social media (incl. Substack). Don't link to Twitter directly, instead use xcancel.com. For Reddit, use old:reddit:com

(Lists may get expanded as necessary.)

Ban lengths, etc.

We will use some leeway to decide whether to remove a comment.

If need be, there are also bans: 3 days for lighter offenses, 7 or 14 days for bigger offenses, and permanent bans for people who don't show any willingness to participate productively. If we think the ban reason is obvious, we may not specifically write to you.

If you want to protest a removal or ban, feel free to write privately to the admin that applied the rule (check modlog first to find who was it.)

I thought we were supposed to stop caring about the environment now because data centers are the current priority

I dont think we have demonstrated enough that we dont want to die. And by demonstration i dont mean politely asking anymore (standing around in a group holding signs and maybe chanting something). Or maybe we just secretly truly want to die, since only smallest fraction of the population cares to attend even the rallies..

People in power should have to deal with unrest related to this all day every day, that is the only way they will do anything about it. Or maybe they will start cracking down on people without doing anything to the climate, but that would just prove that they truly want us dead.

Peacefully asking for change is a mistake if it doesnt work after couple of tries. Or at least those in power should be made to respect those who ask nicely first, but that doesnt come by asking nicely either.

EU Member States decided on Wednesday—while citizens were literally dropping dead from extreme heat—that “green finance” should include companies engaged in fossil fuel expansion (eg new oil drilling). The banality of evil. https://www.politico.eu/article/eu-countries-oil-exploration-green-investment/

[–] AlteredEgo@lemmy.ml 1 points 1 day ago

So there is clearly an evil in the EU because of captured institutional power. But everyone is still cheering expanding the same EU as far eastward as it will go. There is a form of double think here: EU is evil, but EU is unquestionably good, and any action to spread it is unquestionably benevolent and worth any price.

[–] als@lemmy.blahaj.zone 109 points 2 days ago (5 children)

They've been sitting on their hands about climate change for 40 years, I doubt that another heatwave will change much.

[–] ExLisper@lemmy.curiana.net 9 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Putting this on "the EU" is extremely unfair. EU did way more than rest of the world. Yes, it's because it was in a privileged position economically but comparing EU's response to USA you can clearly see who treated it seriously and who was trying to derail it all the time.

The sad truth is that it's the people that were actively fighting all the policy meant to mitigate it. People love to bitch about paper straws and caps that are attached to the bottles but then act surprised the government didn't do anything more substantial.

i don't see how Europe compensated its responsibility or how it acted accordingly to the danger of continuous emissions.

It baffles me that they ruined cars with ridiculous climate regulations, yet we're still getting burned alive by the heat.

It's almost as if there's something that pollutes way more than the consumer car that is being almost completely ignored because bil oil would suffer too much.

I wonder what those things are. If only there was independent research that were easily accessible by the relevant climate change prevention orgs...

[–] UrPartnerInCrime@sh.itjust.works 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Obviously it's wind turbines

[–] 87Six@lemmy.zip 2 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Have you seen how many burds die to them? 1?! 1?! 1!1!? 1!1 /s

[–] comrade_twisty@feddit.org 54 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Just wait til it rains for more than a day, everthing about the heatwave will be forgotten immediately and people will complain that it's too cold and wet.

[–] Ibuthyr@feddit.org 5 points 1 day ago

It's a bit cloudy today to be honest. Massive hoax, everything's fine. Let's roll some coal!

[–] gajustempus@feddit.org 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

with the current weather situation, I HOPE there will be a massive rain- and thunderstorm over here.

the soil is so hard and dry, anything beyond a little spray of water will end in a flood like the Ahr valley. That would actually wash many of these people away...

[–] groet@feddit.org 4 points 2 days ago (1 children)

As much as I don't want people to suffer, but if we get a "century flood" every year for 5 years in a row MAYBE people will start to think and vote for a gouvernment focused on climate protection

[–] gajustempus@feddit.org 2 points 2 days ago

that's exactly what I'm talking about.

A single freak-weather event is a tragedy. But if it happens again and again, people maybe start to see a pattern and listen to reason again. That way we can enable them to FINALLY do the stuff that make a change.

Sadly, most humans don't learn from reason or logic. It takes pain and suffering of some kind for them to embrace real change. Be it monetary pain or actual loss of anything they can feel. Yeah, I wish there was an easier and less impactful way, but from what I learned - that's idealistic dreaming.

[–] Taleya@aussie.zone 1 points 1 day ago

See, it wasn't a problem when projections said it would happen after their lifetimes

But whoopsie!

[–] Seimhe@lemmy.world 14 points 2 days ago (1 children)

It’s okay, we all have USB-C chargers now. /s

[–] comrade_twisty@feddit.org 5 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I have a ton of devices that have USB-c plugs but don't work with USB-c chargers at all. They only work with USB-c to USB-A cables and USB-A chargers.

Shit's stupid.

[–] EngineX@lemmy.zip 4 points 2 days ago (2 children)

This actually calls for more standardisation then less. Unless you believe it would be good to only have one specific charger for each device...

[–] comrade_twisty@feddit.org 3 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Of course that needs to be fixed and standardized.

Just saying the way the law was worded led to many manufacturers taking shortcuts.

[–] Elchi@feddit.org 40 points 2 days ago

Big fail from EU. Frontex should push back heat at the border.

[–] Alienmonkey@piefed.social 24 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

"Heat has no Boarders" is a catchy statement.

Seems like an efficient and truthful message.

[–] socsa@piefed.social 7 points 1 day ago

Nobody boards the heat!

[–] dawcas@scribe.disroot.org 17 points 2 days ago

EU Commission response: cutting air conditioning to floors below the seventh because Ursula and her minions are from eighth up.

[–] wackyheartfluid@lemmy.world 26 points 2 days ago

The same lobbyists that bought every other government have already bought this one. It looked good for a while though.

[–] HaraldvonBlauzahn@feddit.org 11 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

I first learned about the concept of climate change when I was in sixth grade or so, reading a magazine about futurology that my father had. That must have been in 1980 or so.

I then became an applied physicist and have studied about and worked in clean tech.

I see the left picture of OP with that horrific temperature anomaly.

I am just sad and kinda speechless. This is a deadly monster.

I am not talking about giving up.

The people in Warsaw's Ghetto did not give up. The people in Ukraine don't give up.

We cannot give up either. It is a question of human dignity. We are no cattle.

But what do we do now?

[–] Insekticus@aussie.zone 4 points 2 days ago

You fight, brother. The billionaires are the ones destroying the planet by building data centres that our communities were never built for. They fly private jets that spew a car's lifetime of fossil fuels into the atmosphere every day. They deforest native areas (whether legal or not. Whether in your home country or abroad) and strip-mine areas so they cannot be rehabilitated.

Gather your friends who think like you and plan to luigi some billionaires - it's the only way we can slow this down until the scientists and engineers develop a way to reverse the process.

Make no mistake, the global shadow oligarchy WANTS this. They know there is no future for them in the world - once the working class woke up to their bullshit, they decided to destroy it all along with themselves because they have a "if we cant rule over it, nobody can have it" and the greedy politicians who saw dollars were happy to expedite the process.

[–] TanteRegenbogen@feddit.org 6 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (10 children)

Georgia is a not an EU member. Ukraine and Moldova too. Why is it presented as such in the picture?

[–] EngineX@lemmy.zip 7 points 2 days ago (1 children)

You might recall that those are candidate countries..

[–] drath@lemmy.drath.ru 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Well so is Turkey and all the Balkan countries and yet they are excluded

[–] Siegfried@lemmy.world 0 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Wikipedia

Negotiations with Turkey were opened in October 2005,[2] but have been effectively frozen by the EU since December 2016,[3][4][5] due to backsliding in the areas of democracy, rule of law, and fundamental rights.

[–] drath@lemmy.drath.ru 3 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

This is not a revocation of the candidate status. ~~And doesn't answer Balkan exclusion~~. And if candidates are included, why are EEA/EFTA/Schengen countries excluded? This map makes zero sense.

EFIT: Just realized its adriatic sea not balkans, my bad

[–] Siegfried@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

The map includes applicants, candidates and candidates currently negotiating.... which are in the link i posted.

And so, one cannot help but suspect that this is all intentional; as unbelievable as it may sound, the price is a good life for a select few, while the rest simply doesn't matter. A thousand excuses: if I don't do it, someone else will; I can't save the world; I was just following orders, carrying out an assignment, or closing a deal. There are too many people anyway—who cares? Yet who lives long enough to actually benefit from it? No one (though that isn't how far ahead any of them are thinking).

[–] TheBlackLounge@lemmy.zip 7 points 2 days ago

There's a video of Epstein and Bannon talking about climate change as population control to some rich people, very casually. I'm sure it's a widespread idea.

Crazy to think. All of moral philosophy was developed before the threat of humanity ending climate change. Used to be evil emperors at least wanted 1000 year empires for their offspring. Nobody ever even had the power to go "but I'll be long gone by then."

[–] plyth@feddit.org 1 points 2 days ago (1 children)

if I don’t do it, someone else will

What do you suggest to make a change?

[–] kernkurios@feddit.org 2 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Make better policy. For the people, not the corporations. And if someone can't manage that, then at least don't be an a**hole—instead of working for the few. It’s that simple. (Politicians!)

[–] vorpuni@tarte.nuage-libre.fr 5 points 2 days ago

The useless corrupt mouth breathers can't even bother stopping the time changes every summer after more than 80% of people consulted said it needs to stop.

[–] vepr_jako_pepr@slrpnk.net 5 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I hope the eu commission withers under the rise of syndicalist unions

[–] vepr_jako_pepr@slrpnk.net 9 points 2 days ago

We absolutely need to have the freedom lever set to the max with this one, all these problems have the "dictator efficiency" crowd coming out the woodworks

[–] jdr@lemmy.ml 2 points 2 days ago

Let's all move to Greenland!
