no, playstation and rockstar will not destroy the gaming industry. I don't agree with their tactics but lot of people will still play other games. Look at the chart below.

the suckers will pay for gta6 multiplayer. watch.

[–] zr0@lemmy.dbzer0.com 13 points 1 month ago

Have played GTA 5 when it was released. That was 13 years ago. Bought and played the PS5 when it was released. That was 6 years ago.

In the mean time I was just crying and doing nothing, desperately waiting for GTA 6 and PS 6 to be released. /s

Damn, just thinking how many hours I have invested in free games like Path of Exiles or indie games like Factorio is just insane.

Fuck Sony and Rockstar. Investor driven asshats.

"console gaming industry" you surely meant to say.

[–] yakko@feddit.uk 25 points 1 month ago

As we all know, the games industry consists of 3 to 6 companies who spend absolute fortunes making mid tier sequels or soulless buzzword agglomerations.

Sony can eat a dick since the rootkit fiasco and GTA6 is going to suck since none of the OG devs work at Rockstar anymore. Yet I'm spending more money on Steam than ever. Gaming isn't going anywhere.

I just moved all my gaming from Xbox to steam. Since most of my gaming is PC these days and I just switched to Linux, steam is the clear choice.

OOTL, I don't have PlayStation and have had zero interest in the GTA franchise ...what happened?

[–] JakenVeina@midwest.social 13 points 1 month ago (4 children)

PlayStation has announced that they will stop producing physical releases, soon, and I believe they've said the PS6 will have no disc drive at all.

No idea how Rockstar fits in.

[–] borkborkbork@piefed.social 10 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

I think it's: Rockstar has confirmed there is no planned physical copy of gta6.

[–] tyranny@crazypeople.online 6 points 1 month ago (2 children)

my bet is that this is referencing the tens of Rockstar workers who were fired when about to unionise. happened a few months ago

[–] ExcessShiv@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 1 month ago

No they're referencing rock star announcing gta6 as digital only with no physical release.

[–] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 points 1 month ago

Hahaha no, that would require solidarity.

This is for purely selfish reasons.

No idea how Rockstar fits in.

The announcement came shortly after Rockstar announced they won't be making physical copies. It was either pre-planned, or rockstar inspired Sony.

[–] MonkderVierte@lemmy.zip 1 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Or the last manufacturer of optical media stopped?

[–] REDACTED@infosec.pub 1 points 1 month ago (2 children)
[–] MonkderVierte@lemmy.zip 1 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Soo, how many of them are still around?

I thought it was just 2 or 3 still active.

[–] Ghoelian@piefed.social 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

They literally just sent you the list. I count at least 27.

[–] MonkderVierte@lemmy.zip 2 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

Lot's of defunct, sold to with 3 steps, citation needed, or with sometimes a footnote (if at all) to a website that looks 2000s. Also,

This article needs to be updated

[–] Ghoelian@piefed.social 2 points 1 month ago

Well yeah I counted the ones that didn't have those annotations.

[–] ohulancutash@feddit.uk 1 points 1 month ago

Sony DADC in Germany is the last Sony manufacturer, and it’s being transitioned towards lens manufacturing.

[–] ohulancutash@feddit.uk 1 points 1 month ago

Pre-planned. Sony doesn’t make this sort of decision on a whim. They announced a staged exit of optical media in 2024, and closed their BR recorder lines in February.

Next year, Sony will exit home entertainment, handing its TV and media player business to TCL. This would have left Sony Interactive as the last subsidiary still pursuing optical hardware.

Valve: another thing we did first and won't get the credit for fml

Sega: Excuse me?

[–] gankouskhan@piefed.zip 1 points 1 month ago

Main difference is you often have a choice on PC to use another store. Companies that have earned trust reduces impact through consumer friendly policies. Companies like Sony and Nintendo have not shown goodwill, and have been actively hostile.

[–] robot_dog_with_gun@hexbear.net 3 points 1 month ago

roblox doesn't care

[–] DrunkAnRoot@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 month ago

And i just was getting into gta5

[–] Radical_Socialist_t00t@hexbear.net 0 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

In a way I'm okay with it just because Valve (what it has become) as a whole needs a serious kick in the teeth.
