It's both. The article makes the distinction. The program (i refuse to call it an app) launched 25 years ago, which was also the first implementation of the protocol.

Firefox has a "reader" mode and it may not work for all sites but on this one it allows you to read the whole text

I didn't get hit by the paywall when I read it. Just tried to get a paywall-free link thru the Wayback Machine, and even that DID get hit by the paywall :(
