Rules (2024-08-30)

  1. This is an English-language community. Comments should be in English. Posts can link to non-English news sources when providing a full-text translation in the post description. Automated translations are fine, as long as they don't overly distort the content.
  2. No links to misinformation or commercial advertising. When you post outdated/historic articles, add the year of publication to the post title. Infographics must include a source and a year of creation; if possible, also provide a link to the source.
  3. Be kind to each other, and argue in good faith. Don't post direct insults nor disrespectful and condescending comments. Don't troll nor incite hatred. Don't look for novel argumentation strategies at Wikipedia's List of fallacies.
  4. No bigotry, sexism, racism, antisemitism, islamophobia, dehumanization of minorities, or glorification of National Socialism. We follow German law; don't question the statehood of Israel.
  5. Be the signal, not the noise: Strive to post insightful comments. Add "/s" when you're being sarcastic (and don't use it to break rule no. 3).
  6. If you link to paywalled information, please provide also a link to a freely available archived version. Alternatively, try to find a different source.
  7. Light-hearted content, memes, and posts about your European everyday belong in !yurop@lemm.ee. (They're cool, you should subscribe there too!)
  8. Don't evade bans. If we notice ban evasion, that will result in a permanent ban for all the accounts we can associate with you.
  9. No posts linking to speculative reporting about ongoing events with unclear backgrounds. Please wait at least 12 hours. (E.g., do not post breathless reporting on an ongoing terror attack.)
  10. Always provide context with posts: Don't post uncontextualized images or videos, and don't start discussions without giving some context first.

(This list may get expanded as necessary.)

Posts that link to the following sources will be removed

Unless they're the only sources, please also avoid The Sun, Daily Mail, any "thinktank" type organization, and non-Lemmy social media. Don't link to Twitter directly, instead use xcancel.com. For Reddit, use old:reddit:com

(Lists may get expanded as necessary.)

Ban lengths, etc.

We will use some leeway to decide whether to remove a comment.

If need be, there are also bans: 3 days for lighter offenses, 7 or 14 days for bigger offenses, and permanent bans for people who don't show any willingness to participate productively. If we think the ban reason is obvious, we may not specifically write to you.

If you want to protest a removal or ban, feel free to write privately to the primary mod account @EuroMod@feddit.org

Chancellor Friedrich Merz has said migrants are a factor behind the rise of antisemitism in Germany, vowing to combat "this problem."

We don't hate outsiders, it's just those dirty outsiders that do! /s

I mean, sure, there's a grain of truth here. Arabs and Muslims more generally tend to be suspicious of Jews, because of the history around the establishment of Israel (the relationship was way better than Christians-Jews before that). It doesn't make this not ironic.

I’m not antisemite BUT the Israeli government are a bunch of hypocrites and criminals . And the world is still looking to the other side… and now blaming on immigrants?

[–] mljekarovsin@piefed.social 16 points 19 hours ago

Or maybe the shit that israel is doing, is more responsible for it? I do not know, just, maybe? A bit?

[–] talkingpumpkin@lemmy.world 21 points 22 hours ago

Again and again this flawed logic where you either approve of everything Israel does or you are an antisemite... it's high time we start distinguishing between the country of Israel and people of Jewish descent (Jewish people should learn the distinction too, seeing how this "antisemite" argument has been repeated by Jewish communities outside Israel).

As for Merz (and Germany, and Europe, and - alas - apparently the world in general), it's a real shame that the moronic dichotomy of humanity into arbitrary "us" and "them" (and subsequent blaming of everything on "them") is becoming mainstream rather than staying relegated to the far right (and groups of kids that bully other kids).

Ironically, this is the same exact world vision that gave us that nazi-fascism that so thoroughly embraced antisemitism and so methodically acted on it.

Typical CDU Nazi-Shit.

Do we have antisemitic immigrants? Yes. Do we have racist Germans? Yes. Do we have antisemitic Germans? Also yes.

CDU: Should we do something about the "bio"-German Nazis? Nah, let's just blame foreigners, lest we offend our voter base or party members.

Crazy how literally everything is the migrants fault. You have to wait for your dentists appointment? Migrants fault! Nazis are the party with the second most votes? Migrants fault! Arson attacks against refugee homes? Believe it or not: migrants fault!

So stupid to redefine what antisemitism means and then to blame the migrants.

I'd be one of those 'immigrants' who he would call 'antisemitic', but once you look into it you realize I'm anti authorianism and anti genozide in any part of the world, not anti Jews.

I asked a Jewish person what about anti zionist Jews? I was informed they are self-hating Jews. I wonder if they know they hate themselves.

[–] theolodis@feddit.org 3 points 9 hours ago

Self aware zionists would most likely hate themselves. They are so lucky to lack that self awareness.

[–] DmMacniel@feddit.org 20 points 1 day ago

And corrupt conservatives are an even bigger factor. Especially the ones that stoke the fires of fear and injustice.

Hating on immigrants and ethnic minorities hardly started with the US and is far from an exclusively American problem.

[–] MetalMachine@feddit.nl 13 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Believe it or not, enacting genocide is the biggest cause

[–] atro_city@fedia.io 8 points 19 hours ago

Deliver weapons to bomb people, act surprised when they flee and end up protesting the bombing, label them as terrorists and anti-semites.

Genius.

This man is a fucking disgrace.

says the guy from a country known/infamous for thier anti-semitism.

i think peoples misinterpretating this comment: im saying hes the one to talk calling people antisemties, when his country was the hotbed for it in the past. hence the word infamous.

[–] al4s@feddit.org 1 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Maybe in the 1940s, but I don't think it's known for antisemitism today.

According to the ADL, it's the 7th least antisemitic country among the 103 surveyed. https://www.adl.org/adl-global-100-index-antisemitism

[–] Saleh@feddit.org 5 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

The ADL that excused Musks Nazi-Salute, despite Musk having spread antisemitic conspiracies on Twitter befote.

[–] Drusas@fedia.io 2 points 11 hours ago

Salutes. He did it twice.

[–] Miaou@jlai.lu 2 points 16 hours ago

That says more about the ADL than it does about Germany. You really don't have to look hard to find good old Christian antisemitism. Shit 20% of the country votes for the openly Nazi party.

Sincerely, somebody who lives in Germany and who wishes he could unlearn German
