Before my dad retired, he ran his own business. Nothing big, just him and a couple of others, but enough to afford a decent sized house, two cars, and a comfortable lifestyle.
A few years ago, he and I were talking about how the CoL has gone crazy since the early 2000s and he looked up the apartment he rented while he was in college in the 80s. It's still there, a small studio apartment in the city near the college. In his own words, he said that the cost to rent that apartment a couple of years ago was more than he made running his own business.
It has been proven over and over that this is exactly what happens. I don't know if it's still the case, but ChatGPT was strictly limited to training data from before a certain date because the amount of AI content after that date had negative effects on the output.
This is very easy to see because an AI is simply regurgitating algorithms created based on its training data. Any biases or flaws in that data become ingrained into the AI, causing it to output more flawed data, which is then used to train more AI, which further exacerbates the issues as they become even more ingrained in those AI who then output even more flawed data, and so on until the outputs are bad enough that nobody wants to use it.
Did you ever hear that story about the researchers who had 2 LLMs talk to each other and they eventually began speaking in a language that nobody else could understand? What really happened was that their conversation started to turn more and more into gibberish until they were just passing random letters and numbers back and forth. That's exactly what happens when you train AI on the output of AI. The "AI created their own language" thing was just marketing.
HRT has a success rate over 90%, measured as more than 90% of people who go on HRT report an improvement in their quality of life compared to before HRT. Of that other roughly 10%, the majority report reasons outside of regret for stopping HRT. Things like: medical complications, financial reasons, loss of jobs or housing due to being visibly trans, loss of friends and family due to being trans, assault or rape, etc., and most report that they would start HRT again as soon as possible. Only a small portion of that 10% say that they regret taking HRT and that it was a mistake.
So is it literally 1%? I don't know, but it's certainly less than 10%, which gives HRT one of the highest success rates in the field of medicine. By comparison, antidepressants have a success rate somewhere around 36% and knee replacement surgery hovers a little over 50%.
The biggest regrets reported by those who take HRT are that they didn't start sooner, and/or being forced through an unwanted puberty with permanent life-altering effects as a child - which is why puberty blockers are a critical component of trans healthcare. Puberty blockers have been in use for young girls since the 80s for what's known as "precocious puberty" - when a girl starts puberty at a very young age, usually around 8 but can be as young as 4. Nobody cared when it was cis girls taking them so that they would start puberty at a normal age. But when trans people started taking them to avoid permanent, life-altering changes until they're old enough to consent to whether or not they want to go on HRT, puberty blockers suddenly became this untested drug being forced upon young boys by nefarious outside forces in the public eye.
I don't believe parents should be able to make any permanent decisions about a child's body. This includes hormones, tattoos, genital mutilation of any kind, plastic surgery, piercings.
You're right - which is why puberty blockers should be required by law for all children until they're 18 and can decide for themselves which puberty is right for them.

What happens here might only be hurting Americans and killing American minorities at the moment, but the psychotic demagogue in charge here will have real international repercussions soon enough. Honestly though, I think the tariffs have done what international sanctions couldn't do, which is help convince some of Trump's cult that he's the one hurting them. Sanctions would just let him blame the outside world.
You should keep in mind, it will take time for everybody else to truly divest themselves of the orange shit-gibbon and all the corporations based here, and that means time in which the fan spraying shit can turn towards Europe.

Ironically, one of the things that I'm moving to Linux for is the gaming performance boost that I've heard some people report due to the lack of Windows bloat and telemetry running in the background all the time.
Bazzite, the Linux version I keep seeing people recommend for gaming and people new to Linux has had a big boost in users in the past 6 weeks or so, apparently, that people are completely attributing to Microsoft.
As another LGBT person who grew up during the advent of the internet and learned that there were words for things I had felt for years thanks to the internet (despite living in a very liberal area), I completely agree with both of you.
However, I want to make one counterpoint that reframes these movements to where I think these people are coming from: People like us here on Lemmy, who are aware of FOSS projects and the like are a minority group.
I see these groups as a reaction based on the belief that you either have to deal with the corporations or give it up entirely because nobody else can offer what they do, and the corporations need us a lot more than we need them. They're effectively a general strike against the nightmare of corporate walled gardens that the internet at large has become in order to force a correction in the ecosystem, and I think if these groups were made aware of the alternatives out there, we'd probably see a large swing in adoption.
I never said otherwise. I said that the economy does better under Dems than Republicans. That doesn't mean that it's the way things should be done, just that under Dems jobs are added to the economy rather than lost and the national debt grows at a slower rate than under Republicans. Between the two, the economy objectively does better under Dems.
I simply was saying that the "Biden bad because brown people and the economy broke because woke" narrative is a farce no matter how you look at it.
A desktop environment is just a GUI program that your computer boots into by default. SteamOS just boots into Steam Big Screen Mode by default instead, and you can launch into the desktop afterwards. Plasma is the program that Valve chose to use for their desktop environment.
If you wanted to, you could skip all this entirely and launch your games or programs directly from the terminal without ever loading into your desktop.
