In some instances, they've just said it outright.

When users confronted [Anthropic executive] Clinton with their concerns, he brushed them off, said he would not submit to mob rule, and explained that AIs have emotions and that tech firms were working to create a new form of sentience, according to Discord logs and conversations with members of the group.

Why assume he's being stupid? Seems his opinions are intentional and informed.

They'll be able to stop a group of less technically savvy people, who currently are sideloading, from using their phones the way they choose. Apparently that's good enough for Google.

The company has confirmed that it is developing an "advanced flow" to let experienced users install apps from unverified developers

How about don't change it at all, Google

This is a big deal because this will hit low end customers the hardest. People who shop at Dollar General for their phones.

I remember when relatively speedy device unlocks were mandated. And before then, contracts would basically include the price of the phone in them. Now we have to pay extra for the phone, and it's still not ours. Very cool.

Sam Altman is taking these people's deaths as seriously as Elon Musk. The only difference is one of them will gloat and vice signal, and the other will lie and tremble onstage while he tries to scare people into believing he can barely control his word generator.

It's funny to me that their best excuse to you and me is "it's your choice." No reasoning about why AI is good or valuable, probably because they don't have one.

DDFG, maybe you guys should tell the AI devotees that it can be their choice, and make them turn on the setting themselves.

Call me cynical, but I believe that companies might be happy keeping the prices high if it means they can shuffle consumers onto computers as a service. Maybe wasted silicon will end up being good for business.

I tried the Galaxy S25 Edge for about a week. I loved how thin it felt. Unfortunately, the feeling was all it was worth. The battery was very bad, and despite being two years newer than my current phone, didn't appear to perform better in any respect.

It seems performance is plateaued, and while most of the tech industry is gambling on AI being the next big thing, most people aren't impressed. It seems like a great time to try a wider variety of phones out on the market.

What? Purchasing a premium package for your car vanishes when it transfers to a new owner?

If you buy a premium trim, it doesn't vanish if you resell the car.

Twitter has become a de facto public platform for disseminating information. To very roughly paraphrase Cory Doctorow, everyone wants to leave, but nobody can agree on where to leave to. It's a mutual hostage situation for all parties involved.

The air quality in Tennessee would disagree with you about datacenter waste products...
