If Modi suddenly died, you bet it would be pinned. Same in Politics if Trump died.

The loss of the Pope represents a seismic shift impacting 1.3 billion Catholics in 160 countries. It's the definition of "World News".

I'm not a Christian and I recognize this which is why I pinned it. Will do the same thing for his funeral and the election of the new Pope.

Your comment was removed for endorsing transphobia, now you're temp banned for repeating it.

The communities are fine, we need fewer racist comments.

I declare myself Epop and denounce the Pope!

Hey, hey, hey... there's always Pope Joan. ;)

Definitely. This potentially changes the structure of the Church which impacts every country in which it operates.

1.3 billion followers in 160+ countries.

Jesus, he looks like that mobbed up character from the Untouchables:

Link to the image is still up, so we have to remove this as an image post.

If you replace the image with the link to the article, we can restore it.

This is huge, pinning it for now.

Personal for me since my daughter in law is from there. She's trying to reach out but a) infrastructure damage and b) everyone else is trying too.

Edit 6.4 aftershock 12 minutes later.

Edit Map for those unfamiliar. Epicenter was NW of Sagaing, close to Mandalay, pretty much dead center of the country.

Buildings ~~damaged~~ completely collapsed as far away as Bangkok.

See dots on map.

Update from my daughter in law:

"I just spoke with my mom. Fortunately, my family is safe, but there are some damages to our house (Yangon) and my dad’s office (Naypyidaw).

I’ve heard that it is worse in Bangkok. My second brother is currently visiting there, and my family is trying to reach him."

Those of you who haven't blocked the MBFC bot may have noticed it's been updated to include Wikipedia contents:

As you can see on this recent post here:

https://lemmy.world/post/21264585

If your chosen Lemmy client (like mine!) doesn't correctly support spoiler tags, it's going to look significantly larger:

We're aware of the size issue, that's something we're working on. I'm also told there are some artifacts like WP:NEWSBLOG etc. that will be fixed. WP:MEDPOP links will be removed soon in an update.

But given the update and the furor the last post on the bot caused, and in the nature of election season, we'll put it up for a vote!

I'll post two comments below, upvote one if you want to keep the bot, upvote the other to ditch the bot.

Voting will be open for one week from today! 11/1!

Why upvote 2 comments? Well, not everbody can see downvotes. I'll only be looking at the upvotes.

Edit Voting has now concluded, as promised, I'm only looking at up votes, not upvotes minus downvotes and the final result, with an EXTREMELY CLOSE vote of 129 to 125 is to kill the bot.

I'll get the request submitted ASAP.

Screenshot is from the Photon interface if anyone is interested:

It's curious to me how much CLOSER the vote was in World vs. Politics, y'all seemed far ANGRIER about the bot than Politics.

We've had some trouble recently with posts from aggregator links like Google Amp, MSN, and Yahoo.

We're now requiring links go to the OG source, and not a conduit.

In an example like this, it can give the wrong attribution to the MBFC bot, and can give a more or less reliable rating than the original source, but it also makes it harder to run down duplicates.

So anything not linked to the original source, but is stuck on Google Amp, MSN, Yahoo, etc. will be removed.
