I think we may be using different definitions of politics. I'd argue that even under birthright rule there was plenty of political action, just that it was a club most people weren't empowered to have any say in.

I think I get what you mean, though, and you'd be right in saying that these things have been polarised to an almost sporting team-like level, where you're expected to be on one diametrically opposed side or another. Really, it's just a shame that's all getting in the way of running things properly.
