It sounds like if they really did commit to changing their ways, they haven't communicated it, which is PR (Public Relations).

I think there's evidence that the ostracism from not being with peers (on phones, etc,) is worse than whatever benefit is gained by waiting until later.

I feel like it can't be harmful for a parent to limit how much time they can spend on a phone though, but maybe I'm out of touch.

Parents should be involved in their kids lives enough to look at some things together with them on the phone but IDK how much people have time for that...

I get that but most people can't just move to a better neighborhood.

There is a fake moral panic about kidnapping or whatever, but some schools really are not as safe as others unfortunately, or are in more dangerous areas. People aren't usually targeting kids but they might get caught in the crossfire :/

I used to miss the bus all the time before having a phone. But it didn't matter; I wasn't going to be late for anything, I just had to figure out another way home, usually walking which took about 45 to an hour.

If I wanted to go to a friend's house, I'd usually just go to their house and then call using their phone.

I don't think it's easier to do on your own since it takes time to develop artistic talent.

I think * an artist * can do better on their own. Most people using AI image generation will take what they can get.

And scammers, slop generators, etc, will make as much as possible to see how far they can get.

That's good to hear, if true. I'm not an expert at git, I've just seen the two issues that were both closed as won'tfix. I think they'd help their PR (edit: public relations) a lot if they just updated those issues.

Ah, gotcha. I don't know what UWP means. I only read the headline of this one, I blame that.

A long time ago I started a one note.

Then I thought "what happens when they discontinue this? How will I make use of the file?

Idk if you can export one notes and keep the organization, etc intact but I'm glad I didn't keep using it back then.

All code is political, especially foss code. If he had accepted the change, even after initially being skeptical, no one would care. But he picked a side in the dumb culture war and stuck with it.

I think the difficulty to use ActivityPub as a user is a side effect of what makes it resilient. It does not grow quickly amongst the masses, but it also can't be taken out with one company changing. I think in the long run, more and more people will see it as a legitimate social network and it will grow over time.

Because of how Bluesky is designed, to meaningfully federate, your server needs to ingest all data from everywhere, and every new message needs to be sent to every single other federated server.

This means that Bluesky just isn't set up for federation currently: it scales quadratically.

Self-hosting a PDS is not the same.

I'm glad to see someone attempting to run their own index but the protocol is not meant to scale that way, and it gets worse the more indexes there are.
