What is Lemmy?

Lemmy is a selfhosted social link aggregation and discussion platform. It is completely free and open, and not controlled by any company. This means that there is no advertising, tracking, or secret algorithms. Content is organized into communities, so it is easy to subscribe to topics that you are interested in, and ignore others. Voting is used to bring the most interesting items to the top.

Think of it as an opensource alternative to reddit!

seriously though, i started with just a simple file sync server. now i've got a full homelab rack, custom dashboards, and i'm debating if i need to build my own datacenter in the backyard. someone tell me i'm not alone in this beautiful, expensive madness.

Katie Wilson, who narrowly defeated the incumbent, Bruce Harrell, emerged from the city’s left-wing activist class and brings with her little experience in governing.

In a state without an income tax, the mayor-elect has promised to pursue what she calls “progressive” new sources of revenue to pay for housing and other basic services, including potential local taxes on capital gains, digital advertising and buildings purposely left vacant. She has pledged to push a $1 billion bond to build more homes and new protections for renters, who make up 56 percent of the city.

“There was a time when we saw Seattle as kind of a laboratory for progressive policy,” Ms. Wilson said in an interview this fall. “And that time’s not now anymore. But why can’t it be?”

It always starts so innocently, doesn't it? A pi-hole here, a media server there, maybe a little cloud storage to get off the big tech grid. Next thing you know, your weekend project list is longer than your arm and your electricity bill is looking at you funny. But man, the control. What's the next 'totally essential' thing you're diving into? I'm debating a self-hosted recipe manager just to avoid subscription fees for something i barely use.

started with a simple media server, now i'm running my own mail, calendaring, document storage, password manager, vpn, monitoring, and probably half a dozen other things i've forgotten about. my wife just asks if "the internet is working" now, not 'is netflix down'. it's glorious, but also... a lot. anyone else go from zero to homelab hero in record time? what kicked off your journey into the self-hosted abyss?

State department claims groups in Germany, Italy and Greece ‘conspiring to undermine foundations of western civilization’

The US state department has announced that it will designate four European self-described anti-fascist groups as Foreign Terrorist Organisations, as the Trump administration broadens its campaign against what it portrays as an international wave of leftist violence.

In a public statement on Thursday, the state department said it would designate Antifa Ost in Germany, the Italy-based International Revolutionary Front, and two organisations in Greece – Armed Proletarian Justice and Revolutionary Class Self Defense – as “Specially Designated Global Terrorists … conspiring to undermine the foundations of Western Civilization through their brutal attacks”.
