What is Lemmy?

Lemmy is a selfhosted social link aggregation and discussion platform. It is completely free and open, and not controlled by any company. This means that there is no advertising, tracking, or secret algorithms. Content is organized into communities, so it is easy to subscribe to topics that you are interested in, and ignore others. Voting is used to bring the most interesting items to the top.

Think of it as an opensource alternative to reddit!

Another noob question: see the attached image of my thermostat. Would it be possible to switch it for a smart one? What would I have to check? If it is possible, what would you recommend? If is don't want any 3rd party app or account?

I run a Nextcloud instance on my home server and want secure remote access without exposing ports. I came across Twingate, which looks like a VPN alternative.

Has anyone used it for personal setups? Is it overkill compared to something simpler like Tailscale? I’d like to know how you use it, or what else you use.

I'm just confused on why they are forcing me to rent a car at their expense, instead of using my own car. this is the first year they said they are getting me a car.

what could be reasons why they would opt for rental instead of km/milage reimbursement?

I don't wanna drive no automatic lol

I’m a long time user of Joplin but now looking for a newer solution. I was looking at Trilum notes for the tight OIDC integration with Authelia. Has anyone here tried Trilium notes? What are your opinions on it?

I'm looking for a minimalistic layout to control and see the status of blinds in the overview dashboard.

I am currently using the entity card and it works but the downside is that it doesn't show the current blind status. I could add a blind status entity but then the card becomes a lot taller. I wanted to see if anyone has any good layouts for their blinds that doesn't take up too much space and allows them to easily control and see their status (ie. open %).

Pretty much what I want is something that is like what is shown below but with like a 2nd line that shows what the current open % is.

[features eyewitness reports from various cities by participants]

from World-Outlook Oct. 20, 2025

More than 7 million people turned out for the No Kings protests in about 2,700 cities and towns in all 50 U.S. states on October 18, 2025. These numbers are based on reports from the organizers and media across the country.

The main sponsors included the liberal group Indivisible, the American Civil Liberties Union, and hundreds of other national and local organizations.

Some of the largest actions took place in Chicago (250,000), Washington, D.C. (200,000), New York City (where estimates ranged between 100,000 and more than 300,000), and Boston (125,000). Thousands marched in many cities in the South, including Dallas and Houston, Texas; Atlanta, Georgia; Birmingham, Alabama; and Raleigh and Durham, North Carolina.

The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) have shot down an Israeli drone in Lebanon. Israel claimed that the drone was gathering “intelligence” and posted no threat. However, UNIFIL personnel said they’d engaged the drone with “necessary defence measures” near the town of Kfar Kila. After bringing down the first drone, another drone reportedly […]

Sorry if I'm mistaken on this, but I'm still new to self-hosting.

Currently I use SyncThing and I love it. My files are accessible to me wherever I am in the world, and it costs me nothing.

I'd like to move more of my life to self-hosted servers. I'm looking at leaving Spotify for Funkwhale. But if I'm reading the materials correctly, I'll need to set up a domain and pay some upfront costs to make my library accessible outside my home.

Why is that? Is there a way to make my costs 0, the way they are with SyncThing?

Melissa is forecast to make landfall on the island on Tuesday, and cross Cuba and the Bahamas through Wednesday.

Melissa was centred about 230 kilometres southwest of Kingston, the capital, and about 530 km southwest of Guantánamo, Cuba, the U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami said in its 11 a.m. ET update.

Europe's efforts to reduce reliance on US hyperscalers is under fire from many of the local cloud providers it is designed to help.

CISPE (Cloud Infrastructure Service Providers in Europe), a trade association of 38 of the region's cloud providers has issued a withering criticism of the official EU Cloud Sovereignty Framework, saying it is drafted so vaguely it will likely favor incumbents over local operators.
