[–] Proprietary_Blend@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago (8 children)

Are you trying to break Europe by using "k" and "miles" together?

[–] starik@lemmy.today 32 points 1 month ago (1 children)
[–] Proprietary_Blend@lemmy.world 17 points 1 month ago (1 children)

So many baguettes just hit the ground

[–] Quadhammer@lemmy.world 15 points 1 month ago (1 children)

It just dawned on me Americans use k as a shorthand for 1000..... like the metric system 🤣

[–] WanderingThoughts@europe.pub 4 points 1 month ago

And if you'd use yard, then it's only 9% off. One kiloyard is 0.91 kilometer.

[–] AnUnusualRelic@lemmy.world 12 points 1 month ago (2 children)

In the US, k could stand for 1042 or something, who can tell?

(it's the number of thumbs that fit in a half barrel btw)

[–] Proprietary_Blend@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago

Why do you keep being your mother a "half barrel"?

[–] SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 month ago

1153 and 36/127ths. Simple.

[–] blackberry28@sh.itjust.works 6 points 1 month ago (4 children)

k is just a prefix, it is unit-independent

[–] Zwiebel@feddit.org 5 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (2 children)

Ok use kilopounds then. Or milimiles!

[–] Arshem@lemmy.world 6 points 1 month ago (2 children)

kilopounds (Kips) is a real unit that gets used in structural design in the US. It makes no sense lol.

We already have short tons, you don’t lose much precision by halving the number!

Although I do get the argument that using tons is confusing because there are metric tons as well, and with only a 10% difference, it won’t be as obvious as if you confuse pounds and kilos or feet and meters

[–] Nautalax@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

I had some annoyances with this. My old company had a requirement to do some annoying tasks in intervals that depended on the inverse of the number of tons of fuel used and the document controlling those tasks said just that: ‘tons’. But if you looked in the documentation behind that requirement, it was made back when we’d been involved with a European company for sourcing that fuel so that requirement was actually based on the inverse of specifically the metric tons of fuel used, not short tons. So all the math on determining the interval for doing that task had to involve converting for the metric tons of fuel used in the interval even though the newer fuel supplier we had swapped to and we ourselves were using short tons in essentially every other context. And since the controlling surface level document just said ‘tons’ without specifying which kind I was always having to correct the math of schedulers and new people on my team since they would eternally think we had more time to perform the task than we actually did and respectively plunk it down late or tell someone who was asking that it be moved that it could be pushed later than it should have been.

Anything but metric lol

[–] idiomaddict@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago (2 children)

But milimiles would be redundant, it already gets its name from being roughly equivalent to a thousand of someone, somewhere’s (probably in Europe or the Mediterranean, but beyond that, who knows) paces.

[–] EnchiladaRaisins@lemmy.zip 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

A millimile would be five feet, three and a third inches.

[–] idiomaddict@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

Someone, somewhere’s pace!

[–] Zwiebel@feddit.org 1 points 1 month ago

Oh so a mile is just a kilopace you're saying

[–] SavinDWhales@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

If it's a prefix, why do we write it after the number? 🤔

[–] blackberry28@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 month ago

Cos its a prefix regarding the unit

[–] Tja@programming.dev 0 points 1 month ago

I saw that 2 kiloinches away.

[–] ayyy@sh.itjust.works 5 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Do you live in the US? I’ve seen you simping for Trump before but you’re not familiar with how we write car mileage?

Sus af

[–] mursejoy@lemmy.zip 2 points 1 month ago

Probably a Russian bot

[–] marcos@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago (1 children)

You will break people by using a proper Mm there. The GGP is harmless.

[–] Proprietary_Blend@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago

Cool abbreviations bro

[–] Funkt4st1c@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago (1 children)

K means 1,000 as in kilo because T already means 1,000,000,000,000 (trillion) OR 2000 pounds (Ton)

[–] boonhet@lemmy.zip -1 points 1 month ago

T is actually short for 1000 KG not 2000 units of British currency.

[–] Fuckfuckmyfuckingass@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago (1 children)
[–] Proprietary_Blend@lemmy.world -1 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

Merci! It's actually "short" for "kilo". But you're doing great!

[–] Fuckfuckmyfuckingass@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Winning hearts and minds being a smug prick.

[–] Proprietary_Blend@lemmy.world -2 points 1 month ago

Great job! You blocked eurotrash shithead!
