all of agriculture is only like 1/5 of our emissions, and we need to eat.

[–] rjwilliamson@lemmy.zip 1 points 13 hours ago (1 children)

Animal agriculture contributes between 10-20% of total ghg emissions, depending on the estimate.

https://thebreakthrough.org/issues/food-agriculture-environment/livestock-dont-contribute-14-5-of-global-greenhouse-gas-emissions

The entire digital economy footprint, including AI and all internet infrastructure, is less than 4% of global emissions.

https://www.climatiq.io/blog/measure-greenhouse-gas-emissions-carbon-data-centres-cloud-computing

But sure, AI is the problem we should be focusing on.

[–] commie@lemmy.dbzer0.com 0 points 13 hours ago (1 children)

I haven't said anything about AI.

but that Xu et al 2021 paper has some dubious methodology. the conclusions might be correct but the methodology can't prove it.

[–] rjwilliamson@lemmy.zip 1 points 13 hours ago (1 children)

What is the issue with the methodology exactly? In any case, the lower end of estimates is still twice the emissions of all of the digital economy. We would do more for climate change going vegan than we would fighting data centers.

I mentioned AI because that is the topic of the thread we are in.

well I skimmed specifically for lca study combinations, and found them quickly. that invalidates all the data. if I read further, who knows what else i might find

[–] rjwilliamson@lemmy.zip 1 points 13 hours ago (2 children)

Skimming is usually not a great way to make definitive conclusions about a study. Would you care to elaborate on what about the LCA methodology "invalidates all the data", and how you could make such a claim with certainty simply by skimming it?

[–] commie@lemmy.dbzer0.com 0 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

if you had read this study, and understood the underlying science, the fact that I skimmed it would not interfere with your abilitiy to defend it.

[–] rjwilliamson@lemmy.zip 1 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

I have not had any issue defending it, but you apparently have an issue with providing rigorous citations for your claims.

[–] commie@lemmy.dbzer0.com 0 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

you haven't explained why you think combining disparately methodized lca studies produces good data.

[–] rjwilliamson@lemmy.zip 1 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

Where did they combine LCA methodologies exactly? They cited exactly one LCA methodology, so I'm not sure what you are referencing when you mention "combining".

[–] commie@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

the LCA studies themselves are disparately mthodized. they can't be combined at all.

[–] rjwilliamson@lemmy.zip 1 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

No one combined them. Xu, who you are calling into question, used one LCA methodology.

[–] commie@lemmy.dbzer0.com 0 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

xu didn't conduct any LCA studies at all. they combined multiple LCA studies

[–] rjwilliamson@lemmy.zip 1 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

Ok, now I'm questioning your literacy. From the study:

"Methods To quantify the total food-related GHG emissions, we first estimated the total crop and grazing biomass, including livestock feed, and then partitioned the total biomass between plant- and animal-based food (livestock feed) and other utilizations.  Based on the estimated biomass, we calculated and partitioned the production-based GHG emissions from plant and livestock to plant- and animal-based food and other utilizations. After that, we calculated GHG emissions from the consumption-based perspective, taking into account transportation, international trade (import and export) and stock variation. We estimated the consumption-based emissions to explicitly account for the GHG emissions caused by trade. This was especially important for regions and countries which import and/or export large amounts of plant- and animal-based food in the context of better tracing food systems’ global and regional GHG footprints."

And it goes in. LCA is mentioned one time, and they mention the single methodology that they used.

[–] commie@lemmy.dbzer0.com 0 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

this quote shows no evidence of them conducting a single LCA. the fact that they used poore-nemecek's method outs them. they just combined a bunch of disparately methodized studies. it's junk science.

[–] rjwilliamson@lemmy.zip 1 points 11 hours ago

You are a fucking moron

[–] commie@lemmy.dbzer0.com 0 points 13 hours ago (1 children)

LCA studies are custom built for each product comparison. by combining multiple LCA studies that have desperate methodology, they have muddied the results. none of this is reliable. it's not good science.

[–] rjwilliamson@lemmy.zip 1 points 12 hours ago (2 children)

They use someone else's LCA methodology. It honestly sounds like you are just making shit up. Maybe try skimming a bit more thoroughly?

[–] commie@lemmy.dbzer0.com 0 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

maybe you should try understanding the underlying science

[–] rjwilliamson@lemmy.zip 1 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

I do understand the science, and nothing you have said negates my point.

[–] commie@lemmy.dbzer0.com 0 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

so you say, but i had to explain the issue with the LCA data to you, so i don't believe you.

[–] rjwilliamson@lemmy.zip 1 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

You haven't actually made a single point that is relevant to the discussion.

[–] commie@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 10 hours ago

your claim that livestock are a problem was supported by a dubious study. pointing out its inability to actually support that claim is highly relevant.

[–] commie@lemmy.dbzer0.com 0 points 12 hours ago (2 children)

yeah. using somebody else's LCA methodology doesn't make their methodology any good.

[–] rjwilliamson@lemmy.zip 1 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

It also doesn't make it bad, and you have yet to articulate how it is bad.

[–] commie@lemmy.dbzer0.com 0 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

you have yet to articulate how it is bad.

only if you're illiterate

[–] rjwilliamson@lemmy.zip 1 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

This you?

"i am more than willing to engage on any positive claim you want to make (i probably agree with a lot of them). what i’m not willing to do is tolerate personal attacks and dogpiling."

[–] commie@lemmy.dbzer0.com 0 points 11 hours ago (1 children)
[–] rjwilliamson@lemmy.zip 1 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

Yet you have not given a single shred of evidence to back up the claims

[–] commie@lemmy.dbzer0.com 0 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

except all the evidence I have provided

[–] rjwilliamson@lemmy.zip 1 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

You have provided short, confidently incorrect statements with zero citations. I have provided multiple articles with multiple citations each. What "evidence" have you provided exactly?

[–] commie@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 10 hours ago

saying they're incorrect doesn't make them so. i've also pointed out why your links aren't actually proof for your claims.

[–] rjwilliamson@lemmy.zip 1 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

It's really quite irrelevant to the overall point I was making, and was one of several studies that puts the estimate for animal agriculture between 10-20%. Anything else you would like to nitpick about that is irrelevant to the actual discussion?

[–] commie@lemmy.dbzer0.com 0 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

the study is not proof for its estimate. it's not good science.

[–] rjwilliamson@lemmy.zip 1 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

You are very good at saying things that have zero meaning.

[–] commie@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 10 hours ago

what i said is true.
