Drinking alcohol. Also its not probably, its 100% unhealthy for you and a leading killer, yet its a huge part of almost every society on earth.
100% true. But I’m fine doing some things that are slightly unhealthy to my body for fun. For example, I go to a brewery/bar almost every day (since I’m in a walkable neighborhood), and I’ve been meeting my neighbors and socializing a ton. We’ve started a vinyl collection because we have vinyl nights at breweries. One “healthy” thing about alcohol is that it loosens your inhibitions and allows you to socialize better for many people. It’s also sometimes bad if you’re an angry buzzed person.
I’ve met many of my amazing friends in bars or while drinking. It didn’t negate the damage it’s doing to my body, but it makes me happy and social.
Alcohol has been consumed by humans for thousands of years and in reasonable quantities can actually have health benefits.
What you’re talking about is alcohol to excess, or alcoholism. Alcoholism is a disease and is typically connected to other mental issues.
Maybe better recognition and support for mental health starting earlier would address some of that.
What you're referring to is a wrong interpretation of data.

The study found that people who drank a little had, on average, better health than those that abstained entirely. The study failed to mention that a notable portion of those that abstain were abstaining due to health reasons. As in, their health was already bad and was the reason they chose not (or were not allowed) to drink. But, of course, the alcohol industry ran with the first part and has been pushing it ever since. Once you reduce the abstinent group to only those freely abstaining, the average health for the dry subjects is back in the lead.

Better answer: we've been doing it so long that it's just kinda part of human existence. It's not great for you but I've also had sex with a fair amount of guys that keep their hands on their dick while watching women that don't even look human so much they they've busted their nerve endings and struggle to cum in a real vagina. Doesn't mean masturbation or porn is good or bad for you but both are sure as hell things humans have been doing for millennia. Humans also really love to gamble, eat fast food, and get on social media. Stop shitting on the behaviors of the human individual, guillotine the 1%, prevent corporations from owning real estate, tax any individuals' third property at 100% annually and exponentially for every property more than that, make it illegal to work without minimum wage even as punishment for a crime, and remind the 5% that it's their job to pay for bread, circuses, and thirdspaces. That's 90% of modern problems fixed right there.
It also changes your personality for the worse if consumed regularly, not only when you're intoxicated but also when you're sober, since the time every adult had to reflect about their day (usually late at night when the day is over) and make adjustments not to stray too far from the path of righteousness, they were drinking and indulging their hedonism instead of maturing. But (rant? incoming) telling the average Westerner they have a moral responsibility to themselves and society is akin to an insult or just very confusing so you kinda have to mention things like cirrhosis else they won't stop.

Your whole point assumes a person can only reflect and grow at the end of the day and in a sober state. It's completely stupid.
Do you think a person who abuses/has made a habit of alcohol only drinks at night here and there? I was just giving an example, it wasn't an exhaustive list... Don't avoid the conclusion, even if you don't change your behaviour, it is what it is.
Do you think a person can't sit and reflect during lunch? Or confront moral truths while having a beer?

From another comment they made, they seem to be projecting their time as a "party boy" onto everyone else. It doesn't sound like they ever discussed moral philosophy over drinks which many have done.
I have been an academic and a degenerate and understand that truth lives in the grey areas—something they are incapable of or unwilling to understand. I took a peak at their history after reading your exchange with them and yeah, zero self-awareness.

Well, no, I replied to a comment that already called alcohol a dangerous thing, I just expanded on it, talking about how it's not just the personal health risks but the social responsibility that should matter (if you don't die or have any serious complications from alcohol abuse but you change for the worse and act with no virtue, it's still an unnecessary fuck up, and continuing in it is a show of poor character).
But that was more of a direct citation from the Qur'an, and I'm not surprised that the word of God is more convincing/efficient than my own, which comes shaded by my own personality.
Ah yes the passages in the Koran claiming everyone is a shit human besides you.

My religion pretty much commands me to make moral judgements so I can act right (and the call for moral reflection is repeatedly mentioned in the Qur'an), and in this case I'm just sharing the conclusion of my moral questioning and also the word of God. I simply don't understand what this "judgement" you're talking about that you seem to dislike so much is all about. Is this a court? Do I have any power over you as a judge to send you to "silly jail" (like "horny jail" but for silly geese)? I'm expressing my opinion on a certain behaviour as the thread allowed for and you felt called out so you engaged in a defensive conversation. My man, I have no power over you, whatever "judgments" I'm making have no actual effect on you besides the ones you allow yourself to feel. I'm sorry if you disliked me saying "avoid X, it's not good for anyone" so much you felt persecuted or whatever but I'm not going against anything in my faith or my morality. I can't recall any other verses I can easily copy paste here but judgement, whatever it means for you, is not forbidden. I mean, how could it be, how could you even teach your children to do right if you couldn't judge between right and wrong? And furthermore, could we have any sort of moral legal system if we couldn't judge good from evil? The Qur'an warns against too much suspicion (you gotta believe people are good at heart and have a bit of hope in humanity, I guess) and prohibits spying and backbiting, but I'm not doing any of those. I'm talking to you directly about something we disagree with, but one of us feels persecuted for it, that's all. If we talk again, assume that if I ignore whatever points you think you're making, it's because you didn't make them and I don't want to waste our time or make you look even sillier.

In a 15 second search engine session I found multiple Koran verses that say judging people is bad. And obviously from the Bible there is "judge not..".
I guess if nothing else you've illustrated perfectly why most people think religion is bullshit. You are trying to use it to hurt people while lying and saying it's to help them. The religious text that tells you not to do that is dismissed while the religious text you think helps you hurt people is super important and is shoved down other people's throats repeatedly.
In truth I don't think all religious people are toxic and impossible to deal with. But interactions like this are exactly why many people believe those things about religious people.

And my username is just factual. I don't argue as much in my usual social circles because they're not composed of propagandised imperialist fools, hedonistic manchildren and other sorts of nonsense people, and I'm certainly not the only monotheist there... but here, it is a good identifier. 🤷♂️

You've got a brain, but it's easier to run away from obvious conclusions when they're uncomfortable, and this is a Western online space which means your opinion (morality is subjective and alcohol is good/isn't bad) is in the majority so you're comfortable sharing it. I disagree with practically everything you've ever written, that I've seen. Here's one thing we agree on: "religion doesn't need to be used for bad". That's it. Nothing else. I get shit on every time I say it on here but I'll keep saying it, because it's true. But again, NOTHING else you write resonates in any positive way for me whatsoever.

Well, just to clear any confusion: I was raised Catholic and was a big fan of what Jesus said and did (still am, ofc) but the Paulian/Roman nature of the Frankenstein'd Trinitarian tradition just didn't make sense so I was a very young atheist (arguing in Yahoo answers and everything, lol, the good old days) at the age of 11-12. Then I read more and life changed my circumstances and with it, my perspective, and I became a monotheist at the start of my 30s, like Jesus and those of his time and before him were. I'm a Muslim man today (I just don't take the hadiths seriously because, duh, but idk if this means anything to you, I'm just making sure I'm understood). And I'm not American, we don't have these popular sects or whatever where I'm from.
And no, "my religion" doesn't allow me to judge, my morality and my brain does. The same way you can judge yourself and know when you acted right or not (hopefully), I can do it as well. And when I see "moral relativity" for the sake of hedonism, I gotta say something, for all of our sakes (because I need a reminder as well). I'm not here hating on people because they watch Harry Potter or eat too much candy, lol, I'm talking about something that can only evolve into tragedy, so one must be wary of it and avoid it, because "it feels good!" cannot be a passable moral argument (that's the "Diddy/Epstein argument", after all).
