Rent is insane in The Netherlands. You need an income of like 5700 euro to be able to rent an average apartment. In my nothing of importance city the average rent is like 1600 euro. Back in Antwerp I was able to live in the middle of the city center for 900-1000 euro no questions asked about income. Government controlled housing is an option but you are in the race with hundreds of others for a single home.

I'm gonna need a partner just to get a place.

Germany is a little better but i can definitely see it heading in that same direction for the major cities. Even outside the major cities it's already rare to find anything under 9€/m². And the median income is lower than in the Netherlands.

People really need to be out en masse to stop it. One of my friends managed to buy a house and he now pays 600 euro less in mortgage compared to rent. Landleeches are raking in stupid amounts of money because muh free market.

My little brother just moved to Rotterdam for a year with his dutch girlfriend, 1850 euro for rent -- albeit it was a nice large apartment in the city center. That's 3 times the rent I pay here in Sweden! Although with how much my rent is rising maybe I'm there soon enough, at least if we count per m².

Not about rent prices, but I was just saw this post on a subreddit for my state:
