Starting to lock in on some stuff. Pulled a 10/10 on my first exam.

Young Dutch men are, to put in their own words, kinda cooked. It's like a monkey rock at college. I don't know why this country produces such dense and arrogant pricks. You especially notice this if you leave the country and move elsewhere. It has led me to just assume every single white guy I see here is by default a racist and homophobic douche. Maybe if they have like a mullet or a mustache that they can be an exception. The rest of them need some serious gulag time.

True, and the white women here are only slightly better

So, I voted for the first time in my life. Every politician here sucks a lot, but at least I wasn't apolitical for the 21st year of my life.

Given that Bolsonaro might win in one way or another, I don't know why the possibility of another military dictatorship in Brazil doesn't scare me. Gave me some motivation, strangely enough. The terror must not have set in yet.

A lot of my friends have been moving out of the capital city where we all used to live, obviously due to the insane rents and them not being able to afford to live here anymore. I'm sad that they aren't here anymore :(

Anyway currently reading Assata Shakur's biography. She was funny; good sense of humor. The shit she went through was crazy and it sucks she had to end her life in exile.

Rest in power, comrade. ✊

The movie "Once Upon a Time in the Middle East" looks very promising.

As context, the movie portraits a Chinese chef as the protagonist that is dragged into the US invasion of Iraq and uses his tiny Chinese restaurant to protect civilians.

Hope it reaches the movie theater in my country. I will finally have something good to look forward to instead of the usual US movie slop that comes to my country.

[–] ZetkinsBrother@lemmygrad.ml 8 points 1 week ago

I saw it two days ago in China. like it very much. but do not believe that it is a Comedy-Drama. there are some funny moments, but it very hard to watch (graphic scenes, death, murder,...)

[–] Cowbee@lemmygrad.ml 13 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Have a great week, everyone! Keep your heads held high and your mind focused.

As always, communism will win.

If news got out that Epstein is still alive, would you be surprised or no?

[–] amemorablename@lemmygrad.ml 14 points 2 weeks ago (4 children)

I think I would be actually because I don't think those kind of people care enough about each other to fake his death and keep their mouths shut about it. Like what would be the point, from their point of view? If he were still alive, there'd be risk of him getting caught and then talking/leaking secrets to save his own hide. The more straightforward, gangster-state explanation is that he was too much in the crosshairs of the US legal system, pathetic as it is at stopping predators, and so somebody with lots of money (and there were loads tied to his name who could have been freaked out enough to do it) put a hit out on him to stop him from talking.

Epstein was just the logistics guy. You can't convince me that all these famous and powerful people who were there abusing children and women somehow stopped once Epstein died. They found another supplier, be it one or just multiple more spread out.

If Epstein turned out to be alive it would have the same impact as if he were dead. The people complicit in this still walk among us and many of them still hold their positions of power. It doesn't matter if they get their fix from Epstein or some other guy if there are no consequences.

[–] ArcticFoxSmiles@lemmygrad.ml 8 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

It's not Epstein, it's Palm Beach Pete.

DSA is a social fascist ~~party~~ organization, y'all were right the whole time. I will admit I was interested in what kind of impact they could have within the imperial core early on, but now? Fuck'em.

[–] cfgaussian@lemmygrad.ml 20 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (3 children)

DSA is not a party at all. That is the problem. It is an extension of the Democratic Party. It exists to corral escaped leftists back into the Democrat swamp.

A sense of impending doom is a symptom of ProleWiki withdrawal. I’ve hit rock-bottom, posting links to marxists.org.

[–] amemorablename@lemmygrad.ml 13 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

Definitely one of those "don't know what you've got til it's gone" moments for me. Just the other day, there was a thread about "is China imperialist" and I wanted to post the prolewiki article on it. I hope they can get it back up and secure, soon.

So I was finding some scary stuff to read for October and was recommended these books by Annie Jacobsen, Nuclear War: A Scenario and Biological War: A Scenario. As the title suggests, they're not truly fiction, more just a description of scenarios.

The nuclear war one started out well. It even talked about the meeting held in 1960 where the US government was casually planning how to first-strike the USSR and kill like 600 million people. So I was disappointed when I read a little further and the scenario (taking place in 2024 at the time of the book's writing) involved North Korea just throwing a nuke at DC and California for literally no reason??? And then we get this crap which I suppose is supposed to justify this preposterous premise:

Basically every offensive North Korea evil trope rolled into one. A quick ctrl+F through the rest of the book reveals all sorts of other whacky shit:

Um this is a new one lol. Reminds me of that person on tumblr who claimed Mao made his wife "piss for days". Seriously though how do you actually publish this in a book you wrote without getting embarrassed???

You heard it here first guys, Kim Jong-Un keeps a pocket-sized tunneling machine on his person at all times to Bugs Bunny himself to safety.

Speaking of boring, I will not be finishing this book lol. It's pretty dull beyond the genuinely scary details of nuclear detonations with far too much tedious information that reads like a boring wikipedia entry. Curiously, all the stuff about the tech and nuclear policy is rigorously sourced, sometimes with interviews even, but the North Korea Bad shit is just from the usual suspects: NBC, AP, ""dissidents"", etc. The biological war one features pneumonic plague with Russia being the culprit (the evil soviets invented it in this scenario, obviously). Weird coincidence that I picked it up the day before the news broke about the case in Russia...

So now I moved on to The Body Snatchers by Jack Finney and have been having a great time lol. Anybody have any scary reading suggestions for this month?

[–] Commiejones@lemmygrad.ml 8 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

Its funny how Scientists can insist on solid evidence and make sure to highlight every possible margin of error in their field but when it comes to political economy and history they are more than willing to just accept wild irrational beliefs.

Like if someone in their field publishes a paper that has a premise that aligns with their own research they will pick it apart with a fine toothed comb, but if a propaganda outlet says that "bad country" is doing something irrational without cause, they will just go right along with it. They'll even say "that's insane I can't believe anyone would do that" and yet they will just believe that it is happening.

Since I'm still new here I didn't know the differences between Lemmy and Lemmygrad, so I did a quick search in lemmy and sure enough it's more liberal. hope they get more leftist and stop clinging to their old ideas by seeing the failings of the system and the subsequent suffering of people each passing day.

[–] Commiejones@lemmygrad.ml 12 points 2 weeks ago

Lemmy ml is an Op. It paints itself as being unbiased and neutral apart from the hard line against fascism but you look behind the curtain its tankies running the joint. Its a place to lure liberals and expose them to class consciousness.

[–] davel@lemmygrad.ml 8 points 2 weeks ago

I’m a lemmy.ml admin. The admins are MLs, and our (limited) tolerance for liberals is intentional, as is the lack of an explicit ideological stance. Unlike lemmygrad & hexbear, almost no instances defederate from lemmy.ml. Think of it as a border town between ideologies.

Due to long term burnout and just needing a little respite from my OCD and autism I have hired a couple of cleaning ladies to come clean our apartment this Friday. I don't know how to feel honestly, kind of dirty that I have the money to do something like this and also that the ladies are probably underpaid, but I need like a deep clean of our apartment and I just can't handle that myself anymore. What is this feeling called?

[–] VladimirLimeMint@lemmygrad.ml 10 points 2 weeks ago

Comrade I don't consider anyone being tenants as having money, beside decluttering is an actual labor position stemming from custodian and janitor. Declutterer is professional in deep clean and from my own experience as former custodian they better paid than delivery or other manual labor in the same rank.

So I started to give English lessons as a side gig. Currently, I have three students that can understand what I'm saying but cannot reply to me at all.

I always try to be affirmative and only cut them to fix their grave mistakes. So far, they're very happy with the lessons and thank me for my patience.

Rent is insane in The Netherlands. You need an income of like 5700 euro to be able to rent an average apartment. In my nothing of importance city the average rent is like 1600 euro. Back in Antwerp I was able to live in the middle of the city center for 900-1000 euro no questions asked about income. Government controlled housing is an option but you are in the race with hundreds of others for a single home.

I'm gonna need a partner just to get a place.

Sorta random thought, but I think there's real potential in media, of turning the "colonizing barely habitable / uninhabitable planets with terraforming" trope of outer space on its head by having a story that looks like it's starting out that way and then you gradually realize that "there's no one who already lives there" is a colonial civil/savage narrative and there's actually at least one major sapient species with a civilization already there, who is being erased by the space colonizers. It could make for a great "oh shit" reveal while teaching people about how colonialism functions.

I imagine a backdrop kinda like The Outer Worlds. In that game, it's sort of just "what if capitalism but in outer space" but they are also a colony in a sense. They are a colony, however, that leaves out all of the historical baggage associated with colonizing by doing it in a setting where other life with "awareness of its awareness" is unlikely to exist already.

[–] Commiejones@lemmygrad.ml 14 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Best I can do is a white savior story where the protagonist in exchange for betraying the other colonizers is magically granted indigeneity and allowed to marry the chieftains daughter.

Hollywood is sure obsessed with shoehorning a romance plot into everything. I remember reading the intro blurb of an edition of Ender's Game (yeah, this was in my lib days and before Orson Scott Card came out with some rightist views, anti-LGBT notably if I remember right). Anyway, OSC was talking about offers Hollywood had made to have the book made into a movie. And he was talking about how he had to be really careful in reading the contracts closely cause they'd try to do stuff like aging up the characters to have a romance between two of them. This in a book that is primarily about young children...

This is one thing I respect about The Outer Worlds. Even though I enjoy romance subplots in character RPGs like that, it's not essential to them. And as I understand it, those in charge of making the game didn't really want to do a romance subplot involving the player character. The closest thing to one in the game is with an asexual companion and another non-player character. They could have made it a priority and probably made more money that way, but they chose not to, and I don't think the game is really any less for it. I don't think it would be worse with one, but it's also not like it needed one, ya know.

The Chinese men's football team just lost against Tajikistan. What the hell. It was just a friendly but still

[–] VladimirLimeMint@lemmygrad.ml 14 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Nepobabies. Football is China's weakest sport because it's usually populated by urban petit bourgeoisie, meanwhile proletariat leans heavily on ping pong and team sports like basketball and volleyball.
