Rules:
-
Rule 1: posts have the following requirements:
- Post news articles only
- Video links are NOT articles and will be removed.
- Title must match the article headline
- Not United States Internal News
- Recent (Past 30 Days)
- Screenshots/links to other social media sites (Twitter/X/Facebook/Youtube/reddit, etc.) are explicitly forbidden, as are link shorteners.
-
Rule 2: Do not copy the entire article into your post. The key points in 1-2 paragraphs is allowed (even encouraged!), but large segments of articles posted in the body will result in the post being removed. If you have to stop and think "Is this fair use?", it probably isn't. Archive links, especially the ones created on link submission, are absolutely allowed but those that avoid paywalls are not.
-
Rule 3: Opinions articles, or Articles based on misinformation/propaganda may be removed.
-
Rule 4: Posts or comments that are homophobic, transphobic, racist, sexist, anti-religious, or ableist will be removed. “Ironic” prejudice is just prejudiced.
-
Posts and comments must abide by the lemmy.world terms of service UPDATED AS OF OCTOBER 19 2025
-
Rule 5: Keep it civil. It's OK to say the subject of an article is behaving like a (pejorative, pejorative). It's NOT OK to say another USER is (pejorative). Strong language is fine, just not directed at other members. Engage in good-faith and with respect! This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban.
Similarly, if you see posts along these lines, do not engage. Report them, block them, and live a happier life than they do. We see too many slapfights that boil down to "Mom! He's bugging me!" and "I'm not touching you!" Going forward, slapfights will result in removed comments and temp bans to cool off.
-
Rule 6: Memes, spam, other low effort posting, reposts, misinformation, advocating violence, off-topic, trolling, offensive, regarding the moderators or meta in content may be removed at any time.
-
Rule 7: We didn't USED to need a rule about how many posts one could make in a day, then someone posted NINETEEN articles in a single day. Not comments, FULL ARTICLES. If you're posting more than say, 10 or so, consider going outside and touching grass. We reserve the right to limit over-posting so a single user does not dominate the front page.
We ask that the users report any comment or post that violate the rules, to use critical thinking when reading, posting or commenting. Users that post off-topic spam, advocate violence, have multiple comments or posts removed, weaponize reports or violate the code of conduct will be banned.
All posts and comments will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. This means that some content that violates the rules may be allowed, while other content that does not violate the rules may be removed. The moderators retain the right to remove any content and ban users.

I love how the article seems to equate “failure of the state” with police running out of ammo and not ending the violence quickly enough. Not the decades of policies that led to thousands of people feeling like they need to destroy infrastructure.
The state views inability to control it's populace as a "failure" because the states we have enabled to become our modern governance have stopped actually giving a shit about their actual constituents and consistently roll out the red carpet for the rich and corrupt. Loss of control is a failure, real democracy is a failure. The real issue is they clearly (and the media as well) don't have the same goals as the people they lord over.
They have never had the same goals nor given a shit. This is nothing new. This piece of writing is almost 100 years old now:
From Now and After by Alexander Berkman. Chapter 1: What Do You Want Out Of Life?

Media is complicit with Epstein class
I worked in local television news media for a decade in the early 2000's.
It's worse than that: we just don't even teach these people how to be actual journalists.
I remember working in production, catching a new, state-level important story, with court documents proving as much. I printed it and put it on the desk of several reporters. The producer refused to run the story because they "didn't see the story on the AP Newswire." In other words they refused to run the story until a major network ran it first. Three weeks later they ran the story after someone else ran it first.
Recall, I worked in production. I wasn't a newsie. I had better news instincts than these fucking clowns who went to school for it.
It's just rubes saying "yes daddy I'll do whatever you tell me" all the way down.
Journalism is a thing of the past, it seems :(
journalists don't get paid very much AFAIK, so it's not a position who is attracting talent. that's why we see a whole fucking lot of mediocre news articles who fail to comprehend what's actually important.
that and because it's not a very "respectable" position in the eyes of the public. have you ever met a child who said "i want to be a journalist" and their parents were joyous? i haven't. if anything at all, you can expect your parents to give you a lecture of how it's not a "good" job, you won't "earn any bread" with it.
Journalism used to be a respected profession too. Starting 1971 or so after the business roundtable that made a long game to seize control of democracy they demonized them, along with a great many other things.
The government is openly blaming "the radical left" when it's clearly a much broader protest by now.
Not sure leftists are the ones breaking into tobacconists, stealing cigarettes and selling them on the street outside. That's a little bit too enterprising no? lol
They're citing a mayor whose town hall got burned down
better education in prison
it was all a cunning plan
I would love to know how those people think destroying infrastructure will make things better for them. Especially with presidential elections in May.
The implication is that the violence will extend to the people in charge if things don't change.
If people are willing to destroy things that benefit them to enact change, what will they do to the people who are harming them with their policies?
To Macron? Who will no longer be president in May? Yeah, I'm sure he will fix everything in his lame duck period because he's scared.
nah dude, read between the lines. it's obviously a warning to macron and whoever comes after to better do a good job.
Yeah, that's a nice fantasy.
Why do you think the president is the only one with the power to affect change?
Because I know more or less how presidential system in France works.
Because they're French. It worked for them in the past. They've learned that after just protesting fails, you have to escalate and getting rabidly angry is a classic French stereotype for a reason.
It worked for them in the past, but apparently today their lives and future are complete shit
We're in the time where cheap energy is gone and with that easy economic growth. Everywhere future lives are going to be shit. France is just early and loud.
How do police shooting rubber bullets and chemical weapons at protesters make things better?
Protests start peaceful and the violence always starts with the repressive state apparatus trying to quash the protests, and then this provokes rioting and looting from opportunists that want to use the chaos to have fun or get revenge or make some cash.
But the blame lays squarely at the feet of the police.
The teens that are looting and starting fires dgaf about making things better
I guess not everyone in the protests is for burning down things. However the signal is: we dont need fancy buildings if we got no future. Also one view was school runs so long (with very low time ROI for the pupils) it feels like prison. So i can understand why official buildings may b a valid target.
Can't make any waves now, best just get along.... /s
