I talked to my mother recently. I told her I wouldn't be a Jehovah's Witness anymore. It wasn't so bad. It was probably the most important conversation I ever had in my life.

At some point she mentioned that I have an "overdeveloped sense of justice" (??) because (I think) I talk a lot about how the system affects individuals. Communist education is working, I suppose lol

"overdeveloped sense of justice"

I think that's called empathy for other people.

[–] Makan@lemmygrad.ml 3 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (1 children)

When studying Autistic folks, it is often referred to as "justice sensitivity" lol

I guess, by that, allistics mean that we are "over-sensitive" to the idea that certain people have or may get away with not just crime but absolutely horrific behavior while leaving the victims and communities scarred or forced to be confronted with acute suffering while some rich lawyer bails them out of jail or at least death row because "look, it was a complicated time and the emotions and tensions were high during such-and-such murder or similarly terrible act and, look, my client is clearly being framed in a highly politicized case and gas incurred terrible depression and depravation while in prison" or some such similar nonsense.

(I was thinking about this when reading about the court proceedings regarding Sam Altman and the sexual abuse charges by his sister)

But honestly, having a "sense of justice" is arguably even more underrated or maligned than being empathetic.

I mean, in pop culture, I have noticed that a lot of characters that get portrayed as having a particular sense of "justice sensitivity" are also portrayed as "rigid" or even a bit dumb or perhaps like some sort of chump or unassuming dullard (see: Syril Karn). In a Syril's case, the guy literally had "SpongeBob SquarePants syndrome" and seemed in denial that the Imperial government could possibly just brazenly blockade and then strip apart a planet that was relatively well-known and had a seat in the Imperial Senate all while starting it off with a false flag attack and then attacking every person in sight throughout the capital city of Ghor. In fact, his whole arc begins with him feeling the need to avenge two drunk cops because, as far as he's concerned, it's"wrong" to just kill or murder people of the law who nobody seems to give a damn about while everybody around him just coasts through their job like nothing's amiss (I don't believe he or his friend in the first season ever really found out or knew about the altercation between the two pigs and Cass which, if I am remembering correctly, is a detail that I rather love).

All this to say:

While I liked Syril's character and arc as well as both seasons of Andor in general, Syril Karn's character is definitely kinda archetypical at this point and comes with a lot of tropes attached to him that can be found in a lot of story-telling in Hollywood and other media in the United States and elsewhere past and present. I think tropes and archetypes are not necessarily bad writing and can be done right. That's not necessarily what I find interesting.

I think it's the idea that there aren't many people I know that would question or interrogate the idea that a particularly "justice-minded person = a man of law and order = a goon with blind obedience to authoritarian or fascist tyranny."

It's almost as if it's treated not as a trope or the author or writer's point of view... but as a totally normal, totally obvious fact of life that such people are just a bunch of bootlickers.

Idk, I find that very interesting, ngl...

One hell of an explanation. I feel better now that I know that "justice sensitivity" in neurodiverse folks is a thing. There are a lot of things you don't learn when you are treated as neurotypical your whole life, while likely being autistic. (More like quite likely, I got a 159 on the RAADS-R, but I think there are literally 0 ways of getting diagnosed where I live, and if there are, there is no way in hell I can afford them.)

I guess I should get to watching Andor then.

[–] Makan@lemmygrad.ml 4 points 3 days ago

Andor is great and I liked the characters in the series as well (Cassian, Luthien, Syril, etc.).

Honestly, the tropiness of media nowadays doesn't necessarily stop it from being good or at least well-executed.

[–] 666@lemmygrad.ml 8 points 4 days ago

It's an actual concept used to justified lack of empathy. Closest I can compare it to is how your typical reactionary would variably feel some form of disgust or feel that the ideal is childish. An overdeveloped sense of justice, an over-active empathy, a social justice warrior; all of these things seen as "juvenile" as it seems the correct way to succeed in this world and this society is to be sociopathic. Now repeat that on a generational level magnified thousandfold throughout society.

"overdeveloped sense of justice"

imagine saying this with your full chest and not seeing anything wrong with it 💀

[–] Makan@lemmygrad.ml 3 points 3 days ago

Kinda sounds like a lot of 4channers ahahhaha

[–] MasterDeeLuke@lemmygrad.ml 11 points 4 days ago (1 children)

JW parents here too, stopped believing in that stuff ever since I was around 12 years old.

[–] TabularTuxedo@lemmygrad.ml 8 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Oh, you are lucky then. Took me until adulthood to start to doubt this stuff.

[–] Makan@lemmygrad.ml 4 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Different for a lot of people and no shame in it; I wish people who never had to deal with such abusive environments would stop reacting and judging without knowing anything about the subject or someone else's lived experience here.

[–] TabularTuxedo@lemmygrad.ml 3 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

True. I also realized I shouldn't have said that. I don't how Large Cane Toad's life or if trauma was involved. Writing "you are lucky" was very tactless.

[–] Makan@lemmygrad.ml 3 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Oh, thank you, I wasn't necessarily trying to reprimand or shame you, it's just that people, especially boomers and GenXers have a tendency to do this thing where, if someone suffered and they learn it informs their actions, they do the whole "Well, lol, I suffered twice and learned faster than you before your age, what are you doing, bro?" or some other nonsensical bile. Honestly, even Millennials do this a lot, I have noticed lately.

I wasn't saying that that was what you were doing.

Just to be clear here haha 😅

[–] Makan@lemmygrad.ml 4 points 2 days ago

thnx for understanding :)

[–] ArcticFoxSmiles@lemmygrad.ml 12 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Good on you for leaving the JW cult.

[–] Commiejones@lemmygrad.ml 6 points 4 days ago (1 children)

She didn't disown you all at once? That's pretty good. My extended family half adopted an ex-JW because her whole family completely cut her off from even speaking to them. It was mostly a lateral move because my family are evangelical Christians but she figured it out after about a year and stopped hanging out with my family too.

[–] TabularTuxedo@lemmygrad.ml 6 points 3 days ago

She didn't. I was surprised too.
