Yet somehow the asshole is a trillionaire. That don't sit right with me. tf is going on

[–] Sxan@piefed.zip 3 points 14 minutes ago

He isn't, anymore. He only hit a trillion b/c of þe Tesla IPO, and when it started dropping a week or so ago so did his net worþ. Much of his net worþ is tied up in stocks.

[–] ripcord@lemmy.world 1 points 13 minutes ago

Not anymore.

Thanks to the freefalling stock.

[–] Flagstaff@programming.dev 1 points 15 minutes ago

Not for long if this keeps plunging!

I no longer trust reported numbers now that the "system" has been grossly manipulated by cheats and scoundrels in power. I still smirk and shake my head at and teslars driving past me on the street though.

Didn’t you read the headline? It’s in FREEFALL. It’s been SLAMMMED.

[–] Peereboominc@piefed.social 10 points 3 hours ago (2 children)

Don't be fooled by the headline. Look at the long term trend. It is still high. Just a bump. Its the same price as July 2025.

But capitalism operates under infinite growth assumptions, and perpetually seeks increases in value. Any dip, regardless of how much it actually affects the company's ability to operate and generate a profit, is a problem that spells doom for capitalists.

[–] jj4211@lemmy.world 1 points 1 hour ago

Note that while that sounds ridiculous, we demarcate value using a currency system that makes standing still look like mild growth. When you ultimately are controlling currency, you can create the appearance of growth under any real world condition you like.

So a company that looks flat in a system designed to make flat look like grown is actually experiencing some decline.

Of course whether that is a decline in product, results, or just random investor sentiment is all up in the air.

[–] cornshark@lemmy.world 4 points 1 hour ago

And Oct 2021

How much compensation did musk demand last year as his value for running the company?

[–] ExLisper@lemmy.curiana.net 40 points 5 hours ago (3 children)

The company missed Wall Street expectations, despite its core automotive segment generating just over $20 billion in revenue, up 23 percent from a year ago.

How the fuck did it make $20 billion? How the fuck did it make 23% more than last year? Who the fuck is still buying this shit?

[–] Quazatron@lemmy.world 14 points 4 hours ago (1 children)

When I see people drive them, I wonder why you would buy such a thing.

After a few years on this country's hole filled roads and stone paved streets, they start to break down and develop a distinct squeaking noise, indicating that the build quality is not good at all.

Still, I think it's more of a fashion statement from vain people that will trade it for a new car in 4 years, so build quality does not matter. It says "Look, peasants, I have an imported american car. Envy me, you Peugeot driving scum."

[–] TBi@lemmy.world 6 points 2 hours ago

I read the front suspension has a design flaw and needs the rubber parts replaced often to stop the squeak.

As always, people have short memories, or just do not give a shit about ethics

https://www.nytimes.com/2026/06/26/business/tesla-elon-musk-europe.html

Tesla’s vehicle sales rose 77 percent from January through May compared with a year earlier, the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association said this week. In May, Tesla sold 22,000 cars in Europe. That’s more than Ford, Nissan or Honda, even when including their fossil-fuel models.

Many people seem to have put aside their personal feelings about Mr. Musk after Tesla cut prices for its entry-level models to levels that are competitive with comparable gasoline or diesel vehicles and inexpensive cars from China. In some countries, Tesla’s Model Y sport utility vehicles can be leased for less than 300 euros, or about $340, a month.

“Once you go down the pricing scale, people pay less attention to ethics or morality,” said Matthias Schmidt, an independent analyst in Berlin who tracks electric vehicles sales. “Tesla’s product has become so appealing from a price perspective, it’s almost too good to refuse.”

[–] ExLisper@lemmy.curiana.net 5 points 1 hour ago* (last edited 1 hour ago)

I remember Tesla sales dropping after this

so I hoped people are still capable of using ethics when making financial decisions but it looks like I was wrong.

[–] GratefullyGodless@lemmy.world 15 points 3 hours ago (1 children)

As the old saying goes..."Ethics are a luxury that poor people can't afford."

[–] msage@programming.dev 5 points 1 hour ago

But they can afford a Tesla

[–] tias@discuss.tchncs.de 10 points 4 hours ago* (last edited 2 hours ago) (1 children)

The people I know who bought one don't give a shit about ethics. They stayed away from them for as long as they were socially unacceptable, but as soon as the storm blew over they saw their chance to buy one.

Just... a data point. My experience is that at least 20% of a population doesn't care about stuff like this. They care about their own social status, but not ethics.

[–] 0tan0d@lemmy.world 3 points 2 hours ago

Targeting 20 percent of the population isn't the type of business model that puts your stock this far above all the established automakers though. The correction on the junk stock can't come soon enough.

How do you lose money selling electric cars when two oil critical straits are blocaded

[–] zaphod@sopuli.xyz 20 points 4 hours ago

However, the company's gross profits dropped as operating expenses climbed far quicker than revenue, in large part thanks to AI-related capital expenses and other research and development

[–] gnutrino@programming.dev 39 points 5 hours ago

By having your CEO come out as a fascist, pissing off the demographic that tends to buy EVs and also stagnating while allowing your competitors to catch up.

[–] elucubra@sopuli.xyz 17 points 4 hours ago (1 children)

Teslas are objectively last Gen. The only reason they still sell well in the US and some other markets is tariffs.

[–] AmbiguousProps@lemmy.today 15 points 4 hours ago

Other US companies are actually competing with them for market share now, too. It certainly isn't helping Tesla sell.

Also, Teslas are starting to get the reputation they deserve: overpriced shitbox vehicles that have horrible build quality because Musk has stripped anything good out of them for profit.

[–] MattBlackAlien@lemmy.world 28 points 6 hours ago

By pivoting to humanoid robots and LLMs.

Wall Street spent years pricing Tesla like a future AI empire instead of a car company. Now investors are getting a reminder that robotaxis, humanoids and promises don’t magically pay today’s bills. Reality has an annoying habit of showing up right after earnings season.

[–] jballs@sh.itjust.works 99 points 9 hours ago (2 children)

Maybe if Elon throws out a few more Nazi salutes, it will fix the problem. Surely that will increase sales.

"I'm just showing the stock graph in what direction to go"

[–] AbidanYre@lemmy.world 46 points 9 hours ago (1 children)

Absorption by SpaceX incoming.

[–] andallthat@lemmy.world 19 points 6 hours ago (1 children)

I mean, it would still make more sense than SpaceX + xAI. Unlike a data center, a Tesla did actually go to space

[–] FlexibleToast@lemmy.world 4 points 59 minutes ago

And even that was out of spite. That was supposed to be the roadster that the actual founder of Tesla had ordered.

[–] nialv7@lemmy.world 27 points 8 hours ago* (last edited 8 hours ago) (2 children)

tesla has had disastrous earnings in the past and it hasn't bothered the investors before. what charged?

[–] geekwithsoul@piefed.social 52 points 8 hours ago

I think in the eyes of many investors, Elon has lost whatever mojo they thought he had. As Elon never had any mojo to speak of, this mostly just means the investors are finally catching up with reality.

[–] gnutrino@programming.dev 17 points 8 hours ago (1 children)

Could be that some of the irrational Musk fanboys have moved their money over to Spacex? Could also be a complete coincidence though given past Tesla price movements.

[–] AmbiguousProps@lemmy.today 8 points 4 hours ago (1 children)

Or, SpaceX dropping below IPO price woke up the braindead morons to reality and they're now selling off anything attached to Musk.

[–] GreyEyedGhost@piefed.ca 2 points 1 hour ago (1 children)

I'd say this is a significant factor. Some youtuber did a video where he basically showed that most Musk stocks were overinflated by a factor of 10 based on their traditional metrics. The difference was basically built on investors' confidence that Musk could keep the companies growing. Between driving away customers, not focusing on building his businesses, and still not achieving the goals he promised, investors are rightly worried that desired growth is no longer something to bank on. He may have to stop relying on the wunderkind factor and actually start running his companies responsibly, and I don't think he can do that anymore, if he ever could.

[–] jj4211@lemmy.world 1 points 1 hour ago

Didn't help that he pissed away the carefully cultivated "Tony Stark" image. Now people don't shrug off his failures like they were inclined to do.
