News and information from Europe πͺπΊ
(Current banner: La Mancha, Spain. Feel free to post submissions for banner images.)
Rules (2024-08-30)
- This is an English-language community. Comments should be in English. Posts can link to non-English news sources when providing a full-text translation in the post description. Automated translations are fine, as long as they don't overly distort the content.
- No links to misinformation or commercial advertising. When you post outdated/historic articles, add the year of publication to the post title. Infographics must include a source and a year of creation; if possible, also provide a link to the source.
- Be kind to each other, and argue in good faith. Don't post direct insults nor disrespectful and condescending comments. Don't troll nor incite hatred. Don't look for novel argumentation strategies at Wikipedia's List of fallacies.
- No bigotry, sexism, racism, antisemitism, islamophobia, dehumanization of minorities, or glorification of National Socialism. We follow German law; don't question the statehood of Israel.
- Be the signal, not the noise: Strive to post insightful comments. Add "/s" when you're being sarcastic (and don't use it to break rule no. 3).
- If you link to paywalled information, please provide also a link to a freely available archived version. Alternatively, try to find a different source.
- Light-hearted content, memes, and posts about your European everyday belong in other communities.
- Don't evade bans. If we notice ban evasion, that will result in a permanent ban for all the accounts we can associate with you.
- No posts linking to speculative reporting about ongoing events with unclear backgrounds. Please wait at least 12 hours. (E.g., do not post breathless reporting on an ongoing terror attack.)
- Always provide context with posts: Don't post uncontextualized images or videos, and don't start discussions without giving some context first.
(This list may get expanded as necessary.)
Posts that link to the following sources will be removed
- on any topic: Al Mayadeen, brusselssignal:eu, citjourno:com, europesays:com, Breitbart, Daily Caller, Fox, GB News, geo-trends:eu, news-pravda:com, OAN, RT, sociable:co, any AI slop sites (when in doubt please look for a credible imprint/about page), change:org (for privacy reasons), archive:is,ph,today (their JS DDoS websites)
- on Middle-East topics: Al Jazeera
- on Hungary: Euronews
Unless they're the only sources, please also avoid The Sun, Daily Mail, any "thinktank" type organization, and non-Lemmy social media (incl. Substack). Don't link to Twitter directly, instead use xcancel.com. For Reddit, use old:reddit:com
(Lists may get expanded as necessary.)
Ban lengths, etc.
We will use some leeway to decide whether to remove a comment.
If need be, there are also bans: 3 days for lighter offenses, 7 or 14 days for bigger offenses, and permanent bans for people who don't show any willingness to participate productively. If we think the ban reason is obvious, we may not specifically write to you.
If you want to protest a removal or ban, feel free to write privately to the admin that applied the rule (check modlog first to find who was it.)
Thatβs what makes me mad about EU. Seems like they opted for low fine in hope to not trigger tariffs circus, but clown just canβt get over it. They shouldβve slapped max fine which would be 40 times bigger
It's not like we're fining Google for fun or because we hate America. We have rules and Google broke them.
You're trying to tell an 80 year old narcissistic life long serial criminal he should follow the law?
He doesn't seem to understand this concept. It appears that he thinks everyone is as evil as he is, committing crime after crime, that's why he thinks just investigating people is enough to throw them in jail. The idea that some people aren't like him is foreign to him.
A thief is someone that thinks that everybody steals.
Can't wait for more tariffs for US citizens to pay
Easiest way to tell that you are on the right path is to have Trump threaten you over it
The US president can go fuck himself.
No way he's flexible enough
That's what suction dildos are for
Donβt legitimatise a puppet that was probably installed by the hacker army of the most repulsive wannabe trillionaire.
Don't absolve the fascists who voted for him of their responsibility by saying his position is illegitimate. Yes there were and are massive and highly effective propaganda programmes by the enemies of the USA, namely Putin, but also traitors like Musk and other billionaires - but no one was forced to vote for the orange turd. Their bigotry, hatefulness, greed and a culture of being proud of stupidity and ignorance enabled this.
Regardless of which country youβre in, these people have always been there and have been becoming more vocal for the last few decades. What truly put them over the line was the external help which came in the form of millions of dollars, decades of gerrymandering, and 4 years of learning and planning for this.
The 33% bigoted small minded gang has roamed the earth in all corners for centuries.
Well, yes, but not only. The culture of pride in stupidity is unique. In normal countries, being ignorant and stupid is shameful, and the stupid generally keep quiet because of that. In the USA, stupidity and ignorance is paraded with pride. This kind of anti-intellectualism is unique and quite astounding, from an outside perspective.
Then there are other special factors, like the USA having decided that money constitutes speech. Which is obviously ridiculous. That's like saying a bird is a fish.
One more important ingredient is allowing the media landscape to be owned by one man and his family. The US oligarchs thought they were so smart, keep a dumb portion of the population, buy the media telling them what to do, and gerrymander so they have the necessary political weight. Dictatorship inside of a democracy, so smart. But along comes the internet and social media and, who would've thought, now everyone with money gets to influence these regards. Oops.
If you choose to get bribed and not to apply your own antitrust laws, that's on you. Don't expect us to follow suit.
Donβt forget his real name: TACO. π€‘
Yes, but only if you hold firm.
VDL et al have a history of doing the exact opposite, no matter how many times this has proven a failed strategy. Somehow they even seem surprised he responds this way, again and again.
Let's hope they've learned but so far there's been little reason to think they have (frankly the fine was already reduced by billions under what the DMA allows, most likely out of fear).
Sit down old man
He can't. He pooped his diaper again, and Rubio and Miller got carried away with the game of "rock paper scissors" they initially started to figure out who's going to change Donnie...
Maybe a horse head in von der Leyen's bed would be more fitting for his temperament
Insert surprised Pikachu here
The tangerine'tard is calling us out, we're still better than america
I'm not sure how much sense this makes for European citizens. What the commission wants is that Google should direct more users to European competitors rather than its own services. For example regarding price comparison sites. The major German competitor is Idealo, owned by right-wing media empire Axel Springer. Some of this seems to be only about serving the interests of our European oligarchs.
