As someone with some profound ADHD that has affected my career, I have to say, I would be fucking amazing in the Star Trek universe. For someone with an interest-based focus ability, a society where the standard of social merit is, "do cool shit you're passionate about," would be Heaven. I can do things. I can do amazing things. When I'm passionate about something, I can move mountains. But stick me in a cubicle and ask me to do the same grind day in, day out? I really struggle. Some people say they would just disappear forever into the Holodeck. But for me, the coolest thing about the Star Trek universe is that regular people can simply do whatever they're most passionate about, without concern for monetary profit.

Easy. A post-scarcity world sounds amazing. Never have to really worry about the necessities, just explore whatever art or joy you have.

[–] grue@lemmy.world 23 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (6 children)

Sure, you can live in the Star Trek universe. In 2026.

Enjoy the impending Eugenics Wars and Post-Atomic Horror.

[–] Dave@lemmy.nz 15 points 1 week ago

Haha I was gonna reply with something similar. If you choose the Star Trek universe, then you'd better get awfully specific about when, where, and who you are.

The culture series by Ian Banks.

[–] WoodScientist@lemmy.world 12 points 1 week ago (2 children)

This or Star Trek are the only serious answers.

[–] tetrachromacy@lemmy.world 9 points 1 week ago

IMO I would be surprised if anyone who has read the Culture series doesn't say the Culture. That's where I'll be.

1000%. Functionally unlimited lifespan in which to explore the universe, in a super-intelligent ship that contains the sum of civilizational knowledge? Hell yeah, sign me up!

Futurama. People go to the moon for donuts, there are fast food joints even in the furthest reaches of space, you can go any part of the world in less than a second, most, keyword MOST, robots cater to your needs, you can live literally anywhere, and silly, adventurous stuff happen all the time.

[–] SwingingTheLamp@piefed.zip 19 points 1 week ago

Also, the various lengths of wire.

Except there's a bullshit little delivery company in New New York calling down all manner of hell upon us on a weekly basis.

[–] chunes@lemmy.world 5 points 1 week ago

Also, euthanasia is socially accepted. And cheap!

[–] DFX4509B@lemmy.wtf 26 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (3 children)

The Pokemon universe would be kinda fun just to have one of the creatures there as someone to chill with.

For sure me and Jigglypuff would end up in marker scribble fights pretty frequently.

[–] HubertManne@piefed.social 8 points 1 week ago (1 children)

i would go with Gardevoir myself.

Trix commercials. I get to steal food from that rabbit all day with zero consequences.

[–] Rhynoplaz@lemmy.world 20 points 1 week ago

No. You got it all backwards.

That's the world where you can't even pour a bowl a cereal without a cartoon character trying to steal it!

Culture. No question.

Wouldn't mind a lift, if the good ship Arbitrary is listening.

If I had to live in one as a normal person: culture or startrek, as mentioned

If I get to choose my roll/skillset, gleeman in Wheel of Time, visiting all the countries would be amazing

Animal Crossing. All I have to do is go to bed by 1800 (2000?) and I avoid ever seeing the knee high tarantulas.

This is going to sound silly but Kushiel's Dart. I just want to see a world with absolutely no sexually transmitted diseases and a reverence for all sorts of sex.

Star Trek would also be heavenly.

[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 12 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

Star Trek.

TNG era Star Trek; not modern Trek.

The cable guy porn universe.

[–] Katana314@lemmy.world 11 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Very few of them, which annoys me. 90% of fictional universes are dystopian, on the edge of collapse, and only savable by a smaller group.

The Trails games kind of stood out for having a world that’s usually on pace, and isn’t even aware of whatever sinister plot your detectives/adventurers are looking into.

Just let me live somewhere in the Super Mario universe. Reality is cruel and complicated. Let me be a weirdo hermet npc that gives tips to Mario and Luigi when they find my secret cabin.

[–] NocturnalMorning@lemmy.world 10 points 1 week ago

An alternate universe where the shooter didn't miss.

[–] Thrawn@lemmy.dbzer0.com 10 points 1 week ago (3 children)

If we assume I'm not one of the main characters but by living in the world it follows basically the same rules as them. Then zero question Phineas and Ferb.

I see so many people saying Star Trek but there are so many wars and other major issues in that world. In P&F the worst evil people in the world are part of LOVE MUFFIN and able to be completely handled and even often rehabilitated by animal agents.

Whichever universe food commercials take place in. Soon as someone says their hungry the most beautiful food appears instantly but somehow no one ever gets fat. I know that IRL those commercials use paint, woodchips and all sort of nasty stuff to get it looking like that, but IN UNIVERSE everyone loves it. I wanna live there.

[–] ICastFist@programming.dev 8 points 1 week ago

Frankly, any cozy-game universe would probably be perfect. Stardew Valley, Harvest Moon, Hello Kitty Island Adventure, Disney Dreamlight Valley. Even if I end up bored of all the happiness, I can go villain then later have a redemption arc.

[–] NeatNit@discuss.tchncs.de 8 points 1 week ago

The world of Shrek has tons of cool magic in it, sign me up! But also most cartoon/animation worlds, where you can survive all sorts of physical shenanigans with no injuries or consequences.

Adventure Time. Wild crazy adventures, all sorts of interesting creatures. Artisan pickles. You would never be bored.

Just like Mona Lisa, a manga (soon to be anime) where people are born genderless and at 12, they choose which puberty to go through.

Yes I'm trans, why do you ask? 😆 And this whole manga's concept is making me really dysphoric 😭

Easy: Tommy Westphall Universe

Buffy. X-Files. Battlestar Galactica. Batman and Superman and DC JL. ALF. Dr. Who. Firefly. Heroes. Bewitched. Knightrider. Power Rangers. Red Dwarf. Mr Robot. Star Gate. Star Trek.

All the same universe, my friends.

[–] davidgro@lemmy.world 7 points 1 week ago (1 children)

You already do. As mentioned in the comments, X-Files had a crossover with Cops, which is our universe.

[–] hansolo@lemmy.today 5 points 1 week ago

Ahh! Whatcha am I gonna do when they come for me?

star trek definately. My wife and I agree that if we had to live in a fictional universe this would be it. To many others its great to be main or special charactters but the average person its not necessarily great.

[–] Abyssian@lemmy.world 5 points 1 week ago

At this point pretty much any of them would be a step up.

[–] bunkyprewster@startrek.website 5 points 1 week ago (3 children)

Less well known but,

Psalm for the Wild-Built by Becky Chambers or

The nine worlds of The Hands of the Emporer by Victoria Goddard

nice people doing the best they can, in a world that isn't like our current dystopia
