Europeans still aren't buying Teslas with figures out Wednesday showing sales plunged for a fifth month in a row in May, a blow to investors who had hoped anger toward Elon Musk would have faded by now.

Tesla sales fell 28% last month in 30 European countries even as the overall market for electric vehicles expanded sharply, according to the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association. The poor showing comes after Tesla's billionaire CEO had promised a “major rebound” was coming last month, adding to a recent buying frenzy among investors.

They were selling on Wednesday, pushing the prices down more than 4% in early afternoon trading.

I read Musk fired the Tesla manager for Europe and North America over the low sales, as if those weren't a direct result of Musk's own actions. Like there is only one person responsible for pushing the stupid cybertruck and for associating the brand with fascism.

[–] matlag@sh.itjust.works 11 points 6 days ago

Don't you know that he's a genius and none of what he says or does can have any bad consequence? If it's not because of him, it must be because of someone else. Oh, BTW: he also fired a manager in Tesla who voiced against him damaging the brand name.

None of these people know anything about anything. Only Elon knows!!

At this point if a person buys teslas they are either a Nazi or ignorant and neither is good.

[–] misteloct@lemmy.dbzer0.com 8 points 6 days ago

Ignorant, e.g. the "I didn't know" crowd 1 mile downwind of the concentration camp.

If you want EVs to be a thing, China has won the round on this one.

[–] Xande@discuss.tchncs.de 1 points 6 days ago

Sad but true

And still "Top Managers" wonder why...

[–] frenchfryenjoyer@lemmings.world 11 points 6 days ago

Let's hope they drop even further 🙏

Even MAGAs are embarrassed to drive one of his Nazi mobiles

[–] pyre@lemmy.world 6 points 6 days ago

good. please don't stop until he's destitute.

[–] Bebopalouie@lemmy.ca 8 points 6 days ago

I’ll be happy when there’s nothing to report because there are no more sales.

[–] Showroom7561@lemmy.ca 6 points 6 days ago (1 children)

And their stock is still too damn high!

that stock price is not rooted in anything real (and hasn't for a long time). I can't wait until that bubble bursts with a bang i can hear from Europe.

[–] korsystems@lemmy.ml 3 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Never understood the appeal of Teslas. I tried one once and the finishes are truly the worst I've ever seen in a car. Inside the vehicle, it's really Dacia tier

It's like with Apple and their overpriced stuff... Well marketet and a rich posterboy.

Apart of Elon being idiot why would we even consider buying Tesla anyway? Competition is much better when it comes to things like access to authorized service. Charging network is a non-issue in Europe as we have full roaming and one socket standard and brands like Kia, Mercedes or even BYD have competitive prices while all being great quality.

who had hoped anger toward Elon Musk would have faded by now

Even fucking goldfish remember what he's done. He has irreversibly associated Nazism with Tesla at the same time that cheaper and better electric vehicles are coming out of China. The only way is down and that's not going to change until he is no longer part of Tesla and a lot of time has passed.

[–] brown567@sh.itjust.works 10 points 1 week ago (1 children)

There is precedent for a car brand started by a Nazi successfully shaking that image eventually

[–] towerful@programming.dev 6 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Over what sort of timeframe?
Couple months? Couple years? Couple decades?

[–] brown567@sh.itjust.works 1 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Dunno, wasn't born yet 🤷

[–] towerful@programming.dev 5 points 6 days ago (2 children)

From the wiki, and I'm simplifying:
VW was handed over to the German government after being offered free-of-charge to Ford in 1948 by the British government (who ran the factory up till then).
In 1946 the produced 1000 cars per month. In 1949, 2 cars were sold in the US.
In 1952, 12 VWs were sold in Canada.
In 1955 they produced over 1 million Beetles.

So 3 years on life support being ran by the British. Dunno how long being run by the German government before becoming GmbH.

[–] matlag@sh.itjust.works 3 points 6 days ago (2 children)

And at these times, they could claim "Nazism is dead". The issue with Musk and Tesla is nazis are not going anywhere anytime soon. Maybe they should hire VW's CEO, actually. He managed to get the brand past the diesel-gate.

[–] towerful@programming.dev 3 points 6 days ago (2 children)

So, we should be sending people to prison? Cause that's what happened to people involved in dieselgate. Along with the affected cars being recalled and the owners compensated.

[–] matlag@sh.itjust.works 1 points 6 days ago

I doubt Elon will go to jail for being an asshole. Tesla may get in troubles for the promises of unsupervised FSD, but that's not the issue here.

I was more thinking about the brand's reputation recovery.

[–] brown567@sh.itjust.works 1 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago)

Yeah, that actually might work

Of course, Elon would have to be rid of his Tesla shares also

[–] Redredme@lemmy.world 1 points 6 days ago

The issue with Musk is the very clear meddling in EU politics first, second his insane behavior and third, his Nazi salute.

If he kept in his lane and just kept his MAGA insanity stateside the Fallout would be a lot less worse.

But the moment he entered the EU political scene he murdered his brandS in the EU.

they will never recover. The damage was done at the worst time possible, when kia, Hyundai andthe entire German automobile industry went all out with EVs and China (byd) entered the EU EV market.

Tesla is done.

SELL. don't HODL.

[–] MrMakabar@slrpnk.net 2 points 6 days ago

The German government sold 60% of the company in 1960. So another 12 years.

[–] nulluser@lemmy.world 2 points 6 days ago

Even fucking goldfish remember what he’s done.

And that's saying something.
