I do noncommercial talk radio and podcasts, I'm not real-world famous or anything but there are people out there who know me from that. On multiple occasions when listeners have met me in person, they've mentioned being surprised by pretty much all of what I look like as it didn't match their mental image of me. I've also had folks be surprised by my normal talking pace, because they set their podcast app of choice to high-speed playback and that's how they're used to hearing me.

[–] rawn@feddit.org 5 points 9 hours ago

People are generally convinced I'm vegetarian or vegan. I'm not.

Sometimes it takes them eating with me 3-4 times to realize "Wait, you eat meat??" ... It's strange, I seem to have a veggy vibe.

[–] melsaskca@lemmy.ca 1 points 6 hours ago

I'm never as good looking or smart as they heard I was.

[–] neomachino@lemmy.dbzer0.com 22 points 16 hours ago (2 children)

That I grew up homeless, got hooked on pills and then started breaking into houses and commited to a life of crime. I have multiple home invasion, assault, and firearm trafficking charges on my sheet, along with plenty of other stuff.

Nowadays I'm a software developer with a small farm that I spend most of my time working on. I'm quiet, don't go out much and just spend my time in nature with my family. I also volunteer at food drives and donate a good chunk of what I grow. I try to give back and improve the community as much as I can. People seem to consider me a good person now and I've been called Mr Rogers a handful of times in the past few years.

It doesn't come up often and I don't advertise it but it does unfortunately come up here and there. I only got my shit together 6 years ago when I got sober and just this year got off probation.

This gives you grit and determination. Sometimes you get a tough hand but climbing out and doing it quietly well is something to be proud of, amongst the guilt.

[–] themaninblack@lemmy.world 8 points 16 hours ago

Damn dude what an arc! Good on ya, keep it up

I feel like basically everything? I look like a petite pumpkin spice white girl but my taste in music, media, clothing, hobbies etc are typically not what my demographic is into, or I’m super into it like fashion and tend to dress “too nicely” (as if that’s possible) which I think also makes people raise an eyebrow when they hear I listen to metal or I’m a basshead, I’m a gamer and have been one for over twenty years, I’m into cars, I love mechanical stuff in general, I like getting my hands dirty and enjoy things like manual labor, I’m always doing yard work. Other weird stuff like my health history is bonkers, but that doesn’t come up as often unless they ask me directly or ask about my scars. People always seem surprised I’m smart but don’t tell me that upfront lol I’m just a good case of “don’t judge a book by its cover” I guess

[–] pedz@lemmy.ca 6 points 13 hours ago* (last edited 13 hours ago)

I don't like cars. I consider them dangerous and addictive, and I'm willing to cycle a few hundred km just to avoid using one. Mostly because of environmental reasons, but also because I'm probably nerodivergent. Cars are constantly reminding me of the wasted energy, the pollution, and the possibility to kill someone else, or an animal. I'm often distracted and impatient, so I just consider it better for everyone if I avoid them.

And that's usually a surprise to most people that meet me, as the vast majority of people will reply they could never live without their car. Most people love cars, but to me, seeing an endless stream of them on the horizon makes me sad.

[–] rmuk@feddit.uk 2 points 11 hours ago

That I live inside their walls.

[–] AFLYINTOASTER@lemmy.world 5 points 16 hours ago

Nice try, cops.

[–] huquad@lemmy.ml 7 points 17 hours ago (1 children)

Everyones surprised I'm actually a dog

[–] CultLeader4Hire@lemmy.world 5 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

On the Internet no one knows you’re a dog

I have an identical twin. Or that the much shorter person next to me is...that identical twin lol. Yes twin is six inches shorter! We're still identical! Turns out when you're born 4lbs and 2lbs, the 2lb baby does not catch up in height and stuff!

[–] justdaveisfine@piefed.social 42 points 1 day ago (1 children)

People always assume I'm pretty smart because I work with computers and such.

I usually prove them wrong pretty quickly.

[–] harmbugler@piefed.social 5 points 19 hours ago (2 children)

Same, oh wow your printer is too complicated for me to figure out!

[–] Dave@lemmy.nz 4 points 14 hours ago

Refusing to engage with a defiant printer sounds pretty smart TBH.

[–] halcyoncmdr@piefed.social 6 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

It is well known that printers require regular blood sacrifices to power the arcane magic they were originally created with. Being able to take information already output to the screen, and bring it back to put on paper required a terrible deal with powers beyond human comprehension. That deal is still at the core of modern printing.

[–] RecursiveParadox@piefed.social 1 points 4 hours ago

I believe this deep in my soul.

[–] huquad@lemmy.ml 1 points 7 hours ago

He's smell blind!

[–] 123@feddit.org 16 points 1 day ago

My actual age.

[–] cattywampas@lemmy.world 16 points 1 day ago (2 children)

That I was a cheerleader in college (I'm a male).

[–] halcyoncmdr@piefed.social 3 points 16 hours ago

Dude I found a couple Youtube channels about stunting that have been interesting and fun to watch when bored. It takes a TON of skill to do that.

[–] velma@sh.itjust.works 8 points 1 day ago (1 children)

That's fun! How long did you cheer for? The whole college experience?

[–] cattywampas@lemmy.world 7 points 1 day ago

Yeah, and it was a very cool and fun experience.

[–] Nemo@slrpnk.net 14 points 1 day ago (3 children)

I'm a devout Christian.

I think most people assume that if you're not loudmouthed about it, it must not be important to you. Others have just had so many negative experiences with Christianity. I have complicated feelings about that.

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 3 points 13 hours ago

its mainly because people who are very outwardly "christian" tend to lean MAGA, or annoying evangelical types, telling you what is wrong and wasnt.

[–] grrgyle@slrpnk.net 8 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Ditto atheism. I don't believe in souls, afterlives, free will, any of it. But because I'm not constantly trying to debunk theists people have assumed I'm at least agnostic.

[–] NotSteve_@lemmy.ca 4 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

Are you in a religious country? I don't think I know a single person who actively practices religion

[–] grrgyle@slrpnk.net 5 points 21 hours ago

Pretty religious. Muslims are probably the most visible adherents, with Eid.

No dessert for me thanks. I just ate - now's the worst possible moment to offer me even more food. I'll have a plain coffee though.

[–] velma@sh.itjust.works 7 points 1 day ago

I’ll have a plain coffee though.

Right there with ya. I've got a wicked sweet tooth, but the only thing I want after a nice dinner is a small cup of black coffee :)

[–] Elextra@literature.cafe 8 points 23 hours ago

People always underestimate how nerdy I am. I am quite the professional in my career and people overestimate my social skills lol

[–] captainlezbian@lemmy.world 7 points 23 hours ago (2 children)

Copied from my women's stuff answer:

That my mom is dead. I'm not old enough for people to really consider that that stage of life might have happened to me yet.

Also, that I'm hard of hearing. I'm in my early 30s, speak well, and don't look disabled. It's honestly like a superpower how fast people forget when I tell them I'm a lip reader or am (or am not) wearing hearing aids. Sometimes them speaking louder and to my face lasts a whole 2 sentences.

[–] CultLeader4Hire@lemmy.world 2 points 12 hours ago

I’m hard of hearing, but only in the last ~8 years and I didn’t realize how much I’ve come to rely on lip reading to supplement my loss of hearing. I was watching people on YouTube and I couldn’t understand them because it was quiet so I started watching and realized they were speaking French and how that made it so I couldn’t understand them at all because I don’t know French lip reading even though I can understand spoken French fairly well. But yes some people just can’t speak louder for some reason

[–] EtnaAtsume@lemmy.world 5 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

Wow, all of those apply to me as well.

[–] captainlezbian@lemmy.world 4 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

Welcome to the deaf motherless club of lemmy. First order of business is explaining that we aren't all grandmas

[–] EtnaAtsume@lemmy.world 2 points 14 hours ago

I wonder where I could find more members of the club. I should try searching "motherless"!

[–] NeatNit@discuss.tchncs.de 9 points 1 day ago (2 children)

I can put my foot behind my head. People just don't exact it from a 1.78m dude.

[–] Widdershins@lemmy.world 10 points 21 hours ago

Weird Al can do it too and he's a little bit taller

[–] vk6flab@lemmy.radio 4 points 22 hours ago

You might already know this, but one word to look into: hypermobility

Source: I am also bendy.

[–] ambitious_bones@lemmy.world 10 points 1 day ago (1 children)

That I am physically strong. I am skinny and don't have a lot of obvious muscle but to the surprise of many I can lift heavy and stand my ground arm wrestling.

[–] Dave@lemmy.nz 1 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

When I was in university I could beat anyone in an arm wrestle except for the army guys, and it was never that clear to me why.

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 2 points 13 hours ago (1 children)

actual active military? could be that they had to workout/exercise often, ped usage?

[–] Dave@lemmy.nz 1 points 13 hours ago

Yeah active. Sorry I wasn't clear, it was obvious why the army guys could beat me, they odd thing was that I could beat most everyone else.

That I never smoked, I never wanted and I never tried. I also don't like chocolate and sweet stuff, I prefer sour.

To those who don't believe there's the perfect someone out there for everyone.... Serendipity strikes again!

[–] sunsofold@lemmy.zip 1 points 16 hours ago

I have low affect so it's usually along the lines of "Wow, so you aren't going to wear my skin like a mask. You're actually nice. I never would have guessed."
