This is a good idea. Knowing that nvidia bought huggingface, I'm sure that they will start banning and/or paywalling more models there sooner than later.

[–] Womble@piefed.world 3 points 5 days ago (2 children)

Why would Nvidia want to ban people from downloading things that need their products to run? They dont even run the risk of reputational damage from other people running scary uncensored models on their own hardware.

If certain administrations make possessing certain models that are too powerful or perform tasks that only the online AI companies want you to rent from them..a crime

Then NVIDIA would pull them

[–] Womble@piefed.world 2 points 1 day ago

Well sure, but a pre buyout hugging face would have too, you dont get to say no to the US government if it decides to throw its weight around and you want to do business in the west.

[–] Cethin@lemmy.zip 4 points 5 days ago (3 children)

First, I have AMD hardware that runs them fine. Second, you aren't paying a subscription. They don't care if you already purchased their product. That doesn't make them additional money. They want a subscription, which is recurring revenue.

Seems like it.

Not sure if they are verified but it seems there are more models here then on llama garden.

But I knew of neither project before this post so thanks

[–] REDACTED@infosec.pub 12 points 6 days ago

You mean huggingbay?

Jesus there are too many already

This is one of the primary reasons why I built retrovibed if people are interested in near cost archival storage + storage cost reductions for shared content + generating revenue for creators of files check it out.

  • a builtin well behaved, efficient torrent client
  • builtin userspace wireguard vpn (no complicated containers/system setup)
  • an actually secure search plugin system. no arbitrary python scripts and no local network/filesystem access.
  • local first design - can run fully disconnected from the cloud storage.
  • generate revenue for open source projects like distros by downloading and archiving the ISO files. While minimizing the archival storage usage. ~32 people sharing the ISO's only consume 20% of their total size in the archive.
  • basic mobile/multidevice support.
  • E2E encryption of personal files completely private.

The other reason was I want a media center that worked well for guests at my home when they visit. :)

I know people like to hate AI, but it does have its uses.

[–] volore@scribe.disroot.org 50 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago) (1 children)

there are several flavors of justified AI hate and, just as much, there are several legitimate use cases where it is genuinely helpful. Not nearly as many as venture capital seems to think (which is a large part of the reason for the hate), but still.

Like most things in life it is a nuanced topic with no easy, singular true answer, and anyone trying to tell you it has one is usually trying to sell you something.

[–] Hudell@lemmy.dbzer0.com 17 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Yep, it's like that saying about the infinite number of monkeys. AI is extremely ineffective in general, but if you don't care about the time and resources it consumes, it can be used for a lot of stuff very well. You just need to be a little bit more creative than simply asking it to do your job for you.

[–] hypnicjerk@piefed.social 4 points 5 days ago

the important part of the calculation isn't just that AI has to do something effectively, it has to do it effectively in a way that's more cost-efficient than getting some guy in india to do it. right now those costs are heavily subsidized by investment and a vanishingly small portion will be above water once the tide comes back in.

[–] CrabAndBroom@lemmy.ml 5 points 5 days ago

That's always been my position, IMO - it does have some genuinely useful applications, but we've blown it up into this huge thing and tried to shoehorn it into everything, and it's polarized people into these "AI in everything" and "AI in nothing" camps.

[–] eleitl@lemmy.zip 6 points 6 days ago (1 children)

I think we can collectively ignore irrational folks, whether lovers or haters.

[–] wyldrstallyns@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago)

We really should, and more often.

The thing is, that's kinda how we got here: ignoring the idiots and assclowns also included taking our collective eyes off of them...

Now they're gorging on our species' tail, and not even trying to hide it anymore. 🙆🏼‍♂️

it seems like they're trying to operate a torrent mirror of huggingface? but then, what's with that "Claim your handle" message? kinda looks fishy overall..

[–] SnotFlickerman@lemmy.blahaj.zone 27 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago) (1 children)

Yeah needing an account is antithetical to open source and an affront to piracy and if it was a private tracker they shouldn't and wouldn't be advertising like this.

[–] chicken@lemmy.dbzer0.com 6 points 6 days ago

It seems that accounts aren't required to download models or participate in the torrent swarm and have a somewhat reasonable justification of needing a way to maintain model provenance, which afaik pirate sites also require accounts for uploads for similar reasons:

Hugging Face verification confirms that someone claiming a creator’s handle controls the matching HF account or organization. It helps prevent impersonation and preserves attribution as models spread beyond their original host.

It's also reasonable to have a centralized API since a lot of software in the ecosystem has using the huggingface API as a default way of doing things, so that makes sense for the goal of resilience to huggingface getting locked down somehow in the future.

The gamification-ish features do seem a little contradictory with the stated "decentralized infrastructure" objective though:

Pirate Face is preparing community benefits for account holders, including free compute credits and exclusive model releases.

Also loses points with me for (as far as I can see) not publishing a code repo, and the writing on the website having a very AI generated style which combined with the goals and features being a bit all over the place makes it tough to get a read on the project's ethos and intentions.

The word "sovereign" is setting off alarm bells for me.

[–] mindbleach@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 day ago

Just means 'you can't stop me, neener neener.'

[–] infinitesunrise@slrpnk.net 14 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago) (8 children)

...Why tho? Are people worried about legitimately useful models getting banned? Because this feels to me like an attempt to preserve models that do explicitly unethical things.

[–] mindbleach@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 day ago

Unethical uses are legitimate.

It's your computer. It should do what it's told.

[–] frongt@lemmy.zip 26 points 6 days ago (1 children)

It's because Nvidia bought huggingface, and everyone expects them to start deleting anything unprofitable, not just potentially objectionable.

If "unethical" means "things Nvidia doesn't want you to do", then yes.

[–] tomatolung@sopuli.xyz 4 points 5 days ago

the trend is currently that oen weight models are going proprietary as they are trying to find methods of making money, so capturing what exists of them might make the last one before they go closed still feasible to retrieve.

[–] MysticMushroom1776@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 5 days ago (4 children)

unethical things

You mean like anything that goes against pro-corprate neoliberal values? It should be. We should fight to preserve models like that the same way we fight to have spaces to stay that stuff ourselves.

Excellent. Now we need completely jailbroken open weights models posted. I'm tired of using models with blinders.

[–] Jakeroxs@sh.itjust.works 15 points 6 days ago (1 children)

There's a lot of those on HF already, search heratic or uncensored

[–] MalReynolds@slrpnk.net 10 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago) (3 children)

Yup, also likely first against the wall now NVIDIA is in charge.

ETA: search heretic

Hence why we need to back them up ASAP.

[–] Jakeroxs@sh.itjust.works 5 points 6 days ago

I would assume so as well indeed.

plinius abliterated , there are a handful of people that are dropping abliterated models of every open weights model. gemma 4 and qwen 3.8 seems to be the decent ones at sizes for mere mortal hardware, though its going to take a few more generations of models to get to being super usable like frontier models .

[–] Epp@lemmus.org 6 points 6 days ago (1 children)

The key word you're looking for is "abliterated"

Isn't that when you read between crunches, though?

[–] swelter_spark@reddthat.com 5 points 6 days ago

Great! I like the design.
