It wasn't an experiment, more like an aside in a paper about something else. He just figured that if a photon could cause an absorption, then it stood to reason that a photon could cause an emission. Then he just worked out the math. Again, not as a discrete discovery or prediction, just as a method to make a point about something else.

which is an outdated term because nothing gets amplified anyone, it's rather an Oscillator, but for whatever reason the appropriate abbreviation never stuck ;)
