Daggerheart: "Theatre Kid (derogatory)" lmao

This list is actually hilarious

[–] grue@lemmy.world 16 points 1 day ago

Not to be confused with "theater kid (extremely derogatory)" for Vampire The Masquerade.

Damn somebody knows a Pathfinder player they don't like huh

[–] epicshepich@programming.dev 4 points 19 hours ago

I've never played Lancer but I got into K6BD last year so it's cool to see people like Abbadon's other work

[–] iamthetot@piefed.ca 14 points 1 day ago

I chuckled at a lot of this, but have qualms with a fair few others. Some don't say anything about the player at all, entirely dodging the premise of the meme. For example, Pathfinder "their game is just D&D without commitment" says nothing about the player, it's just a direct critique of the game. Starfinder "just pathfinder in space" also does not comment on the player at all. GURPS sounding like a disease has nothing to do with the player. There's examples like this in most of the games.

Loves the settings more than the game

My dude, the G stands for Generic. It works for literally any setting, it's optimized for homebrew settings. I've never touched the "canon" settings.

[–] Afelia@lemmy.blahaj.zone 16 points 1 day ago (2 children)

GURPS. The "Overcomplicated" part stems from 4channers deciding an optional rule that the majority of people will never actually encounter in a game means you have to do calculus all the time. The actual majority of the game is roll 3 dice, try to get under the number next to your skill plus modifiers.

[–] wyldrstallyns@lemmy.dbzer0.com 11 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (3 children)

As someone who's played countless hours of GURPS, back in the 90s, I will point out that the general saltiness at its unrepentant chonk was always a thing, and long before "4channers" existed. (even before most of those backbirths were even zygotes)

Also, your perspective seems to ignore the unconscionable levels of inelegant bullshit that every GM had to slog through just to run a damn session, let alone a campaign.

Oh, "campaigns"...The original geek addiction that makes MtG/WH/etc. look like amateurs. That sweet, timeless, fantasy of an ongoing, regularly-attended group weave of arcs that's hooked deep each NIB "forever-DM" right in their inner kid... le sigh. 🥲

There's a lot to be said about how GURPS is clunky - and it is, even when you're not digging into the insane optional rules - but I think its biggest flaw, by far, was that it had very little appreciation for genre. GURPS was built on the notion that a single system could tell any story, but what that meant in practice was that a single system could tell a story with different trappings. GURPS was set dressing applied to a core system that ultimately imposes certain genre constraints on anything you tried to run with it. This is true of all systems, but GURPS tries to act like it isn't.

That's not to say that it's universally bad. A lot of the settings for it do fit well in the mold it offers. Alpha Centauri is fantastic in GURPS, and it's a wonderful system for the huge line of historical settings it offers, if you're looking for a more grounded, simulationist take. But there are also plenty that don't. Illuminati University is brilliant but has no business being a GURPS setting. That game desperately wants to be PbtA. Ditto Discworld. Star Trek makes no sense; that game probably wants to be running on something like Cortex, the relationship engine would work beautifully with Trek's tone and themes.

God help you if you actually think the WoD conversions are a good idea. And who in their right mind ever thought it was the right system for Hellboy?

No system can ever be universal, because roleplaying games are stories, not historical re-enactments. That matters.

I mean, character creation takes longer because you have total control over everything, but that's basically a mini-game in itself. Honestly I find it much easier to get up to speed running a GURPS game than D&D. The books are better organized, the mechanics are more consistent, descriptions are more clear, everything is better cross referenced, character creation programs include page numbers with your traits for easy reference.

All you really need to know as a GM is how the success roll works, and you can basically look up or wing everything else as you need it. Maybe if you try to learn how everything works, it can seem like "inelegant bullshit", but not even the books recommended you do that. GURPS works best when you treat it as modular, adding things in as your players or world demand. All the mechanics you definitely need fit easily on a single sheet of paper.

[–] wyldrstallyns@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 15 hours ago

GURPS char gen was to the 90s what Skyrim modding has been to the last 15yrs. ☝🏼

[–] Afelia@lemmy.blahaj.zone 5 points 1 day ago (1 children)

My perspective might be a bit more biased on that first point since I only got into the system in the late 00's.

But I disagree with the second point. I almost exclusively GM for my group, and I'd hardly consider anything I had to do to run the game a "slog". There's about as much prep and rules checking as any other system. Maybe a bit more front loading if you want to make a custom race available, but that didn't take too much more time that doing the same in Pathfinder 1e or DnD 3.5 did.

One of my favorite actual play podcasts, The Film Reroll, uses GURPS in all of their campaigns and they play fairly rules-light. The most complicated it usually gets is remembering what an untrained skill defaults off of (and it's usually a -4 modifier).

I'd totally play some GURPS.

No Stars Without Number?

[–] Metostopholes@midwest.social 5 points 22 hours ago (2 children)

I like Delta Green, CoC, Trail of Cthulhu, Cthulhu Dark, Trophy Dark, Kult, etc. because I want terrible, fucked up, traumatic things to happen to my character. I want them to go insane or die, and to suffer the entire time it's happening.

Or sometimes I want to play Yazeba's Bed & Breakfast. 🤷

No Rifts? Not that it was ever popular, nor was it easy to get into and play, and the rules were a bit convoluted, and the balance was all over the place, but at least it was

Tales from the Floating Vagabond

  • Theater kid (mildly derogatory)
  • Mimes actions, has never LARPed
  • Hums "The Raiders March" unconsciously
  • Brings pitcher of margaritas to game
[–] RebekahWSD@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Deadlands isn't in here! Alas!

[–] Atlas48@ttrpg.network 3 points 23 hours ago

It's present in it's absence, then.

[–] EnsignWashout@startrek.website 4 points 23 hours ago

How dare you throw shade at my Great Lakes Avengers! lol.

I unironically think that Critical Role removing this hilarious one-shot in response to fan pushback, but then having no problems taking a fuck-ton of money from Amazon was the beginning of their downfall for me.

I kinda want to try them all.

Only played D&D, the Alien RPG and Dragonbane.

I own F.O.R.G.E., Dragonbane, PDF versions of Pathfinder, One Ring and a few others.

Never DMed but have started using 'solo' supplements to play coop games. Must find the time to play more.

[–] TribblesBestFriend@startrek.website 5 points 23 hours ago (1 children)

You don’t want to touch FATAL with a 10 feet pole but yeah the others are fun with the right Players

[–] spittingimage@lemmy.world 3 points 22 hours ago (1 children)

FATAL is the game where you, the player, may die during character generation.

By being raped

I'd not say Wildsea is my favorite, but I always like to bring it up because it's really good at what it does and it will be someones favorite.

Daggerheart making the cut and Draw Steel being missing is par for course, but still sad.

[–] Mandarbmax@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I'm trying to get one of my friends to run wildsea for me! Looks really fun

[–] Riverview_Legal@lemmy.ca 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I was at Breakout Con in Toronto this year. I signed up for Wildsea, sadly the game got cancelled. I will have to try next year.

[–] spittingimage@lemmy.world 2 points 22 hours ago

I've been dropping hints to a friend that Wildsea is his kind of game to run.

[–] MarcomachtKuchen@feddit.org 6 points 1 day ago

Holy shit this post keeps on giving. Literally smiled at each RPG at least once.

[–] 5ibelius9insterberg@feddit.org 5 points 1 day ago (4 children)

Now do

  • Hârnmaster
  • 7th Sea
  • The Dark Eye
  • Savage Worlds
  • DungeonSlayer
[–] zakobjoa@lemmy.world 7 points 1 day ago (1 children)

The Dark Eye

  • has you roll a climbing check for each step of the stairs individually
  • every spell is as useful as "You can summon a cat. It's just a regular cat and it will probably wander off. The spell takes 12 days and costs 11 million gold pieces."
  • bard just sings regular songs
  • Du bist Deutsche:r.
[–] iamthetot@piefed.ca 2 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

The bullet points are supposed to describe the players not the game.

I recently picked up Pilgrims of the Murk Dome based on the artwork alone. Cool setting, weirdly complicated rules for really just hands off communal story telling. Itching to play it.

[–] AdamBomb@lemmy.world 3 points 23 hours ago

Would love to see them take down HERO system and RuneQuest

[–] BenVimes@lemmy.ca 3 points 23 hours ago

Warhammer 40k Wrath and Glory, anyone?

  • Theatre kid (probably derogatory)
  • Owns an actual WH40k army, or at least the dice for one
  • "Of course there's another WH40k TTRPG!"
  • Would definitely give their soul to Slaanesh
[–] VerilyFemme@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 points 23 hours ago (1 children)

Not gonna lie, this kinda sold me on Exalted.

The fact that tables and lists galore, or German stuff is not part of Shadowrun is bothering me on a personal level.

[–] DmMacniel@feddit.org 5 points 1 day ago (3 children)

"Nothing ever happens"? Uhm... what about the stuff that do happens between Editions?

Does Paizo have other investment streams besides the revenue stream? Because I believe that Paizo, even if its big, is indie.

Starfinder would be my favourite ttprg, even though I have currently no group :(
