Me: working in silence

Headphones: "Your battery is low"

Me: heart attack

[–] kryptonianCodeMonkey@lemmy.world 10 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

I was walking around with some open-ear bone-conducting headphones on the other night before bed trying to corral my daughter. They were connected to my phone but with no audio playing. I had forgotten I had them on.

And also didn't realize that the volume was all the way up.

Then, as I was walking into my daughter's dark bedroom, silent but for the calming white noise of a fan, I got a work email to my outlook app and it felt like the notification sound was coming from every direction, emanating from the very walls directly into my soul. I stopped and said out loud "What the actual fuck was that?!" before I remembered the headphones were on. A nice corporate jump scare to start the evening right.

I was using my brain as a media player and forgot I put headphones on to listen to media not hosted locally on my brain.

In my defense, it was a really catchy song.

Love that song! I haven't put that on my playlist in forever, mostly its just been improvisational stuff that's all over the place genre wise. The last one was like if Deltron and Parov Stelar did a collaboration and then Apashe walks in and they call Beardyman to help. Then it gets kind of Amon Tobiny...

[–] wyldrstallyns@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Waitwhat? I must hear this! 😱🔥

[–] DudeImMacGyver@kbin.earth 3 points 22 hours ago (1 children)

Yeah, thing is I can't play it anywhere but my own head.

[–] wyldrstallyns@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 22 hours ago

Phase, think of the rest of us who have an ever-hungry void in our hearts where Amon Tobin used to be. There must be a way. 🙇🏼‍♂️😅

[–] bw42@lemmy.world 24 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Sometimes I do that on purpose for the noise canceling.

[–] Zarobi@aussie.zone 1 points 13 hours ago

Headset is locked in mode

[–] lonefighter@sh.itjust.works 6 points 1 day ago

I used to do it all the time at my old job so coworkers would see them and leave me alone. It worked most of the time.

[–] irotsoma@piefed.blahaj.zone 8 points 1 day ago

God I love reading these just to confirm I'm not the only one. Lol

[–] Fmstrat@lemmy.world 3 points 22 hours ago

I do this with tea. Poor cold cup.

[–] ThunderComplex@lemmy.today 18 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Or when you’re in the pocket doing a task and you have to pee and you know you can’t take a piss rn because afterwards you won’t get back in the pocket

[–] baldingpudenda@lemmy.world 9 points 1 day ago (1 children)

My brain will ignore it, until it screams PISS NOW. might as well start on those emails. I ain't getting shit done in the next hr anyway

[–] Jakylla@jlai.lu 6 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I sometimes forget to go to the toilet : "I want to pee- OH A BUTTERFLY" then remember 45min later

[–] daychilde@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago

"Eh, I'll go in a few mins, I want to work on THIS right now" and a few hours later you're in pain.

[–] MyTurtleSwimsUpsideDown@fedia.io 11 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Thanks for the reminder.

It is also tradition to change tasks only to realize the new task is outside the Bluetooth range of one’s phone, which was left in some inscrutable location.

[–] daychilde@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago

I've now had bluetooth headphones for a couple of years and I still feel very weird moving away from my desk and being able to continue listening. Brains are weird. lol

[–] lukaro@lemmy.zip 10 points 1 day ago

And yet another trait I share.

[–] snooggums@piefed.world 12 points 1 day ago

Look the thing I was listenting to stopped 5 mintues ago and I just haven't had a chance to start something new.

Oh, it ended 30 minutes ago. I'll get to that right after this email...

[–] kumakami@hexbear.net 7 points 1 day ago

let me pause my music to read this screenshot...

oh owl-pissed

[–] ViaGetty@lemmy.dbzer0.com 8 points 1 day ago

.... You caught me in the act, damn.

[–] laz@lemmy.dbzer0.com 9 points 1 day ago

Stop leaking state secrets

[–] MutantTailThing@lemmy.world 7 points 1 day ago (1 children)

You know that feeling where you want to take your headphones off but you forgot you already took them off a while ago so you just grab into thin air?

[–] daychilde@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Not at all the same thing, but you've reminded me of one annoyance. heh.

I have dialysis three times per week that involves being in a chair, laid back for 4.5 hours. For some, they watch the provided television, but I can't stand it. I have over-the-ear headphones and I play a particular playlist every time and try to nap, and even if I can't get to sleep, I have my eyemask on, so it's a dark place with nice music to hang out.

Multiple times now I've been in a dream after having successfully gotten to sleep, and someone will talk to me in my dream, but I can't hear them because I have music playing in my headphones. (When I dream at night, no headphones, I never hear any audio in my dreams, so the lack of them talking is not unusual, except the musci playing I can hear). So in the dream, I realize I have headphones on, and I tell them - sorry, jsut a sec, lemme take these headphones off so I can hear you. And I take the headphones off, and te music is still going. So I take my headphones off again...... but the music is still playing. And I will take my headphones off a half dozen times, getting more and more frustrated that I can't make te music stop so I can hear them.

It's quite annoying, but somewhat hilarious (in an eye-rolling way) when I do wake up and remember it happening. lol

I love that story. Thanks for sharing!

[–] Rakonat@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I'm feeling attacked by the meme, then I read the comments and am contacting the FBI for witness protection.

[–] Goodlucksil@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

The FBi denies your request because you're not neurotypical.

[–] Rakonat@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

FUCK. I mean... uh... nice, dog? Director?

[–] MehBlah@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Been rocking the aux headphone input in my care lately. This morning I was thirty minutes down the road before I realized I never hit play.

[–] definitemaybe@lemmy.ca 3 points 22 hours ago (1 children)

I know it's a typo, but my ADHD really enjoyed trying to imagine a situation where an aux cable would be important/meaningful enough to "be in your care".

[–] MehBlah@lemmy.world 3 points 10 hours ago

Didnt notice. I think I'll just leave it.

[–] massive_bereavement@fedia.io 5 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Hold on, it's not just me?

[–] daychilde@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago

It never is. spaceman-with-gun-behind-other-spaceman.bmp :)

Literally me ten minutes ago…

[–] SalamenceFury@piefed.social 2 points 1 day ago

I'm in this post and I don't like it.

[–] disorderly@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

What about deciding to listen to something and then realizing you're already listening to something? I do this at least once a day.

[–] daychilde@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

Oh, that is the worst. I want to listen to this song BUT ALSO that song AND that other song RIGHT NOW. ALL OF THEM.

[–] danekrae@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

Sitting here thinking "that's kinda weird", only to notice that I'm doing that right now...

[–] NessD@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Oh, it's the opposite for me. It's sensory overload having something stuck in my ear without having something else to overpower it.

[–] floquant@lemmy.dbzer0.com 8 points 1 day ago (1 children)

That's why I believe in over-ear supremacy. Say no to plastic in your ears, yes to velvet around them.

[–] NessD@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

That would be even worse. It's getting my ears hot.

[–] daychilde@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Let me jokingly say: Clearly if headphones can get your ears too hot, your A/C isn't down enough to be comfy.

But let me seriously say: I'm sorry, that sucks. :(

[–] NessD@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

In Germany there is no AC :D Thank you, but it's not much of a problem. When I don't listen to music I just put them down.
