MODERATORS

Have been feeling this strongly recently. The people with the most signs are the least appealing to support. The food with the most advertisements seems the most likely to be trying to lure people into eating garbage.

Surely there is a word for this? Spam doesn't feel like the right term when it's all over the place all the time. It's like you know it's wrong because there's too much money involved trying to convince everyone it's right.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reactance_(psychology)

In psychology, reactance is an unpleasant motivational reaction to offers, persons, rules, regulations, advice, recommendations, information, and messages that are perceived to threaten or eliminate specific behavioral freedoms. Reactance occurs when an individual feels that an agent is attempting to limit their choice of response or range of alternatives.

Reactance can occur when someone is heavily pressured into accepting a certain view or attitude. Reactance can encourage an individual to adopt or strengthen a view or attitude which is indeed contrary to that which was intended — which is to say, to a response of noncompliance — and can also increase resistance to persuasion…

Thanks to OP's question and your answer i now have a word for the feeling i've had for most of my life that makes me block out ads wherever i can.

[–] HurricaneLiz@lemmy.world 2 points 4 days ago (2 children)

Yeah, closest I'd heard before this is Oppositional Defiant Disorder, which always struck me as the most sane position to have considering what "they" were trying to shove down my throat

[–] Soggy@lemmy.world 6 points 4 days ago

ODD does not discriminate between sensible advice and "being told what to do", it's a childish knee-jerk reaction to any perceived authority. It is not a sane position to automatically reject any idea originating outside your own head.

ODD is not what you’re looking for. A logical resistance to being force-fed material that you know is crap and want nothing to do with isn’t the same as escalating the suggestion your room needs cleaning or you have to put the ipad down to a screaming fight.

Is this how we get moon landing deniers and anti vaxxers?

It includes the “I’m smarter than everyone else” component.

This is a phenomenon I have observed and talked about so often but never heard a name for. Marketing is malign bullshit and they're using it in a kind of 'washing' technique to try to cover up how obviously shitty the thing is so... 'shitwashing?' 'Diarrhoeawashing?'

I listen to several Cool Zone Media podcasts and there's an ad currently running with (actors claiming to be) employees of United Healthcare saying how much they love their job because they get to "help people". MF your entire business model is killing people for profit. It's so gross.

I think there's a difference between what someone called "the charizard effect" versus what you're talking about. There are brands that we can all think of that have obnoxious and oversaturated ads for products that are fine, actually, they're probably more expensive but aren't actively disgustingly evil. I actually know someone who was represented by Morgan and Morgan after a friend of mine was killed in a high profile accident while working at a megacorp, the Morgans in that situation did a good job, their ads are still obnoxiously oversaturated. Whereas UHC is shitwashing, and I remember seeing ads for fossil fuel companies doing a similar thing.

I think the word you're looking for is "overexposed" or sometimes "overplayed"

[–] Rhynoplaz@lemmy.world 13 points 5 days ago (1 children)

I get this a lot too. It's the same reason people hate on pop stars.

When you can't go 10 minutes without hearing a song by or news about Taylor Swift or Justin Bieber, (Sorry, I'm old so those are the freshest examples I can think of) you just can't help but develop a negative connotation with their name, for really no reason at all.

Sure, you might not like the music, but that's no reason to actively hate on them. For me, it feels like the more other people love them, the more I HAVE to hate them just to balance out the universe or something, but logically, it makes no sense and I've tried to actively stop doing that over the past few years.

It's not worth your time and no one thing really says that much about a person.

[–] callouscomic@lemmy.zip 11 points 5 days ago

Snob Effect in economics. The more popular something is, someone is less inclined to want to consume it.

A semi-opposite is the Veblen Effect, attracting people to more popular things or pricier things.

[–] bluesheep@sh.itjust.works 4 points 4 days ago

I know exactly what you mean. Back in college they tried so hard for everyone to join the study association, that any intention I had to join vanished since it felt so shoved down my throat

[–] GreenBean@lemmy.today 3 points 4 days ago

You mean the "Princess Di" effect? If I have to hear about poor brave and valiant her or see one more picture of poor poor her peeking up from under that 5lb swoop of bangs she hid behind I. Will. Scream. Married Royal and Rich. Had problems with the in-laws and that Camilla-datin' husband. Shit happens. At least she didn't have to work at Dollar General to make ends meet.

I don't know of a term. Maybe slopped out?

[–] HubertManne@piefed.social 8 points 5 days ago (1 children)

no idea but I completely feel you. Man election time sucks and its like dudes. I made my decision before you sent out fliers. At least in most cases.

[–] baggachipz@sh.itjust.works 4 points 4 days ago (2 children)

Seriously, who the fuck gets a junk mail flyer and is like “I didn’t know to vote for this person but now I definitely will!”

[–] HubertManne@piefed.social 6 points 4 days ago (1 children)

yeah I wonder that to. I think the scariest thing about modern times is all the money spent on advertising that is apparently worth it.

[–] baggachipz@sh.itjust.works 3 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Yeah it wouldn’t be done if it didn’t work. I just don’t understand.

[–] HubertManne@piefed.social 1 points 4 days ago

I mean like if you have something new and your trying to tell people about it. ok. but like hey why don't you come eat at this place that is super well known. I mean are people like homer and then decide to go?

[–] Soggy@lemmy.world 3 points 4 days ago

A shockingly high percentage of voters are essentially no-information, name recognition motivated.

[–] AA5B@lemmy.world 2 points 4 days ago

It’s the reason I hate most pop music and their performers….. but I never heard a term for it

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 4 points 4 days ago

yes , with current trump, gop news. its by design as part of the strategy, to flood the zone to make people not pay attention to the news.
