I bet the fossil fuel giants feel like absolute idiots now for not leading with “our products could endanger all life on the planet and best case probably doom Humanity to a new longer dark ages”.

[–] scytale@piefed.zip 23 points 2 hours ago (2 children)

I don’t understand this weird game of AI companies saying their product will do the worst thing while asking people to give more money to them. But hey, apparently it works 🤷

[–] Kintarian@lemmy.world 9 points 2 hours ago

Look how powerful it is. You want power right? Here’s the greatest power ever invented and it could be yours! But wait! There’s more! You could end the human race! Call now! Operators are standing by.

Ever hear of people investing in weapons manufacturers?

[–] Earthwormjim91@lemmy.world 5 points 1 hour ago (1 children)

Not remotely the same lol. Human beings have been fighting each other since there were more than two people. That is never going to stop, which makes weapons profitable.

When a company is telling you their product might go rogue and kill all humanity, that kinda puts an upper bound on being profitable

Dunno, we've been making nukes like crazy even since the whole nuclear winter thing was figured out.

[–] scytale@piefed.zip 4 points 1 hour ago (1 children)

Sure, but those companies are selling war that is profitable. AI companies are selling the end of the world.

Like a collection of nuclear warheads that can end the world, but if it's your collection of nukes you can threaten others with it.

[–] weps@lemmy.world 2 points 1 hour ago

and that they may not be profitable while doing it

Just one more trillion bro, come on bro, it's sentient bro!

become sentient

Absolutely not. The large language model chatbots use is not a path to sentience.

The rest of it, sure. If someone prompts it to.

Company that built the torment nexus declares that the nexus may torment. Stock prices rose on the news.

I was promised that the cyberpunk dystopia would at least look cool. What a letdown.

[–] Sabata11792@ani.social 16 points 6 hours ago (1 children)

We don't even get cool robot arms or genetically engineered cat girls.

[–] brax@sh.itjust.works 1 points 3 hours ago

"Sheeeeeeit, I thought she said silicon implants... Well, at least she jiggles I guess"

[–] dual_sport_dork@lemmy.world 7 points 6 hours ago (1 children)

[–] pnwpixel@programming.dev 2 points 1 hour ago

Don't go to the ripperdocs the Maelstrom suggest...

[–] devfuuu@lemmy.world 21 points 6 hours ago (1 children)

All marketing and advisement is good! Everything is hyped even if it's the worst thing possible. It keeps the value high 📈

The Line Must Go Up

[–] Sibbo@sopuli.xyz 22 points 6 hours ago

Yeah when you make an ipo you have to emit confidence about your venture I guess.

[–] middlemanSI@lemmy.world 12 points 7 hours ago

Let's start small. Give it a tach job, to perform reliably. Can't do it, can you?

[–] Lauchmelder@feddit.org 3 points 5 hours ago
[–] DekSomBoon@lemmy.today 5 points 6 hours ago

But before that all happens (it will happen btw) we will have cool businesses and money made so it is all worth it
