Community rules (click to expand)

1. Follow the site-wide rules

2. Be civil
  • Understand the difference between a joke and an insult.
  • Do not harrass or attack users for any reason. This includes using blanket terms, like "every user of thing".
  • Don't get baited into back-and-forth insults. We are not animals.
  • Leave remarks of "peasantry" to the PCMR community. If you dislike an OS/service/application, attack the thing you dislike, not the individuals who use it. Some people may not have a choice.
  • Bigotry of any kind will not be tolerated. This is an LGBTQ+-friendly community -- if that is a problem for you, you should leave.
  • 3. Post Linux-related content
  • Including Unix and BSD.
  • Non-Linux content is acceptable as long as it makes a reference to Linux. For example, the poorly made mockery of sudo in Windows.
  • No porn, no politics, no trolling or ragebaiting.
  • Don't come looking for advice, this is not the right community.
  • 4. No recent reposts
  • Everybody uses Arch btw, can't quit Vim, <loves / tolerates / hates> systemd, and wants to interject for a moment. You can stop now.

Notice how he isn't saying just that he needs more, just that he wants us to have less. This isn't a message for us, it's a plea for the ram manufacturers to further squeeze the supply and reinforce their monopoly for the cloud of the future where you just rent computing from them. I don't think so buddy, fuck off

    [–] juipeltje@lemmy.world 1 points 5 hours ago

Man, i was actually considering getting some ram cause both my server and desktop still "only" have 16 gigs each. I figured DDR4 wouldn't be that bad but i just checked and jesus christ that shit's expensive lol. Guess i'm good with 16 gigs for now

As much as I dislike China, I'm hoping they can do to RAM what they've done to things like solar panels and EVs.

Just flood the market. Make RAM cheap again!

    [–] NovaVeles@lemmy.world 14 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

It doesn't have to be the fastest, it doesn't need to even be the most efficient it just needs to cheap enough to undermine the folks from Bastards Inc.

Heck, why not do like the giant MRDIMM's and just slap loads of chips on to taller DIMM's.

I'd quite like it if build quality were better than that for which China has become a byname tho'. I like my shit to last at least a decade

    [–] NovaVeles@lemmy.world 6 points 18 hours ago

Fair point. I will say this, the low quality of Chinese goods isn't entirely their fault. They enable it but it also comes from higher up.

I knew someone that was building some device, I forget was it was, and they were in China sourcing parts. That is when you see the game and they know exactly what is going on. You are after a specific capacitor, they will bring out 10 of the same product ranked in terms of price and quality. The 5 cent part, that will last 5 years or 1,000 hours, the 50 cent part will last 30 years or 10,000 hours.

Most producers will just go for the cheapest parts available to get the prices at the end down or to increase profit margins. China can make brilliant high quality parts, just those that control the pricing will always go for the low end and then blame it on Chinese manufacturing.

But also, many Chinese manufactures offer these parts knowing this, so it goes both ways.

If you think chinese memory will be cheaper than 5-10%, i have a bridge to sell you. They have no reason to sell it for really cheap, except maybe to gigacorps like Apple, but thats a different discussion (long term, strategic, guaranteed demand).

The idea that we're being wasteful for the unforgivable sin of owning a computer is absolutely wild. πŸ˜‚

    [–] PuddleOfKittens@sh.itjust.works 15 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

It's also made up. People keep anthropomorphising Sam Altman, as if everything he says isn't just designed to either pump up OpenAI stocks or position himself better for salary/compensation or exit strategy.

"Sam Altman says-" is about as credible as "ChatGPT says".

    [–] zwiebelkaramell@lemmy.world 10 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

I love the idea of "anthropomorphising" someone who is ostensibly a human being.

    [–] Tlaloc_Temporal@lemmy.ca 11 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

Being a CEO and the like really kills a person's humanity. I really don't like drawing a line were some people are human and others aren't, but C-suite executives make a strong argument.

    [–] eepydeeby@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 4 hours ago

I think maybe the c-suite drew the line first when they shirked their responsibility to care for their fellow human beings...

The workers must seize the means of production and communication.

    [–] Cellari@lemmy.world 8 points 1 day ago

Sam really hates the possibility of this :D

    [–] Mika@piefed.ca 2 points 1 day ago (2 children)

AI is means of production today.

    [–] bedwyr@piefed.ca 18 points 1 day ago (1 children)

It's not AI, it's an LLM model. It will never become AI, because llm models are incapable of thinking, of reasoning, it's giving you an answer based on all the answers ever written they have on file. The hallucinations can't be eliminated.

Don't believe the hype. These data centers need to be destroyed, after due process by law. They will get bailed out by the government then agree to run social scores on us, that's what is going to happen.

    [–] maya_s_trojan@piefed.blahaj.zone 4 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Hardware is the means of production and software leverages that. AI is part of that software suite working in tandem with hardware to be productive.

I would argue computers in general are both the means of production, as well as the radio networks like LoRa that can let them communicate without large infrastructure buildouts, intstead relying on truly neutral mesh connections with no central servers. Thus is covers both production and communication in one device.

    [–] Flower@sh.itjust.works 26 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Ah, here comes the time when people build cyberdecks kludged together our of recycled components.

    [–] bedwyr@piefed.ca 12 points 1 day ago

This data center build out can't last forever, they are so overextended, obviously the government will bail them out afterwards, or either and or both parties. But that should at least halt these build outs for the most part, and lower computer costs, (although the manufacturers are likely geared to llm specific equipment and would have to retool, and the market can remain irrational longer than we (me, myself, and I,) can remain sane, apparently.)

    [–] gastroglizzy@piefed.social 65 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Found the RAM-o-sexual. You just want to build one of those "assault computers". The only thing they're good for is CHILD PORN which means you LIKE children being raped!

You just sit around in your house all day daydreaming about the day someone tries to hack your network and you get to defend it, don't you, you sick bastard!

    Seems obvious enough

    [–] ivan@piefed.social 45 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Yeah, fuck off Sammy. I was playing with Markov chains on my Core 2 Duo PC before OpenAI was even a thing, it’s my God given right to keep stochastic parrots at home, and weird cryptofascists won’t take it off me!

    [–] Fishnoodle@lemmy.world 37 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Didn't he rape his little sister?

    [–] trojanbark@lemmy.world 10 points 1 day ago (1 children)
    [–] h0tbeef@lemmy.zip 24 points 1 day ago (1 children)

    No need for the β€œallegedly”

If he sued anyone for libel then it would come out in discovery that he definitely raped his sister, so he can’t do that.

Same with Donald Trump raping children.

    [–] trojanbark@lemmy.world 4 points 19 hours ago

Yeah the "allegedly" was a joke, he definitely raped his sister

    [–] yaroto98@lemmy.world 31 points 1 day ago

May all of his RAM shipments be swapped with used DDR2.

    [–] Kanda@reddthat.com 10 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Having a centralised and planned RAM economy seems a bit communist, TBF. It's just the small detail about it all being to the benefit of one man that's bothersome.

    [–] strawberry_enjoyer42@lemmy.blahaj.zone 11 points 22 hours ago (1 children)

It would be for the express purpose of capital, not helping the community.

You'd think that instead of communism that would make it capitalism, but instead it just makes it capitasm.

They will. Not directly but by manipulating the market and what will you so then? What the fuck are you actually gonna do about it? I bet you don't even own a blunderbus.

Well he shouldn't own a national security thread. We all have our flaws I guess.

I like the memes but I think running AI Models is incompetence at every level.
