Ye Power Trippin' Bastards

1572 readers
19 users here now

This is a community in the spirit of "Am I The Asshole" where people can post their own bans from lemmy or reddit or whatever and get some feedback from others whether the ban was justified or not.

Sometimes one just wants to be able to challenge the arguments some mod made and this could be the place for that.

Posting Guidelines

All posts should follow this basic structure:

  1. Which mods/admins were being Power Tripping Bastards?
  2. What sanction did they impose (e.g. community ban, instance ban, removed comment)?
  3. Provide a screenshot of the relevant modlog entry (don’t de-obfuscate mod names).
  4. Provide a screenshot and explanation of the cause of the sanction (e.g. the post/comment that was removed, or got you banned).
  5. Explain why you think its unfair and how you would like the situation to be remedied.

Rules

Expect to receive feedback about your posts, they might even be negative.

Make sure you follow this instance's code of conduct. In other words we won't allow bellyaching about being sanctioned for hate speech or bigotry.

YTPB matrix channel: For real-time discussions about bastards or to appeal mod actions in YPTB itself.

MODERATORS

Please don't downvote posts in this comm because you think a ban was justified. That defeats the purpose of this comm.

Downvoted - I disagree...

I worked for a website with up- and down-votes before reddit ever existed. Let me tell you that, no matter what you do or say, the downvote button will always be a disagree button.

If a ban is justified, then there is (pretty much by definition) no power tripping, right? So I feel like it definitely makes sense for this community to downvote if the ban is justified.

no this just buries the post and doesn't transfer the info, that this is why the downvote was cast (and not, say because it's off-topic). We have text votes for this, check the sidebar

[–] SorteKanin@feddit.dk 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Ah okay - I will say, the community name is a little misleading. The name makes it sound like it's for exposing power-tripping mods, but the sidebar suggests it is for asking whether a mod action is justified or not. Perhaps a different name would be more appropriate.

It's both. Ultimately it's to point power overreach, but these kinds of places have a habit to turn toxic, so I've structured it in a way which promotes constructive dialogue instead of ranting.

Agreed, in general actually, not just for this comm. But it's impossible to enforce, it's too difficult for most humans to upvote/downvote only to promote relevancy and quality, rather than agreement. I don't see any solution for this in a public internet forum.

I'm sorry, I couldn't help myself, I had to downvote this

[–] db0@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 1 year ago

Y'all make me gonna power trip all over youse arses!

[–] corsicanguppy@lemmy.ca 1 points 6 months ago

I automatically downvote 'comm' as being confusing and fetch. I think the jargon degrades the value of the post or comment.

[–] sudo@programming.dev 1 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Then when should posts be down voted?

[–] db0@lemmy.dbzer0.com 0 points 2 months ago (2 children)

Optimally never. I can't see a reason to downvote in this comm

[–] jet@hackertalks.com 2 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

I only downvote comments in this community reciprocally when the person has downvoted my comments.

But... the meta for the posts appears to have emerged:

  • PTB : Upvote
  • YDI : Downvote

And the totals:

  • Overwhelmingly positive upvotes - Lemmy thinks this was a PTB
  • Balanced - You probably deserved it
  • Overwhelmingly negative upvotes - You deserved more.
[–] sudo@programming.dev 1 points 2 months ago

Can't you just disable it then or that a sitewide only option?

[–] gregor@gregtech.eu 1 points 1 year ago

!yepowertrippinbastards@lemmy.dbzer0.com, the irony. I'll use the downvote button to show that a ban was justified. The entire purpose of this comm is to show mods power-tripping and I shall downvote content that does not fit the theme of this comm.

I am a simple man. I can only embrace or reject. Nuance is not part of my vocabulary.

[–] Taleya@aussie.zone -1 points 4 months ago

If you really wanted to have fun, do a weekly wall of shame where you list the downvoters

[–] Dasus@lemmy.world -1 points 2 months ago (1 children)

I see a few people who don't really dare comment on this community are currently on my profile mass downvoting.

Greetings to Russia! Enjoying your autocratic shithole?

[–] db0@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 2 months ago (1 children)

I suggest to stop jumping to conclusions

[–] Dasus@lemmy.world -1 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

As soon as someone proves even one of them wrong, I will.

But pointing out painfully obvious spam as spam isn't "leaping to conclusions" any more than 1+1=2 and no matter how many bots people get to spam "you can't be sure 1+1 is two!!! ", it won't be.
