Rules (2024-08-30)

  1. This is an English-language community. Comments should be in English. Posts can link to non-English news sources when providing a full-text translation in the post description. Automated translations are fine, as long as they don't overly distort the content.
  2. No links to misinformation or commercial advertising. When you post outdated/historic articles, add the year of publication to the post title. Infographics must include a source and a year of creation; if possible, also provide a link to the source.
  3. Be kind to each other, and argue in good faith. Don't post direct insults nor disrespectful and condescending comments. Don't troll nor incite hatred. Don't look for novel argumentation strategies at Wikipedia's List of fallacies.
  4. No bigotry, sexism, racism, antisemitism, islamophobia, dehumanization of minorities, or glorification of National Socialism. We follow German law; don't question the statehood of Israel.
  5. Be the signal, not the noise: Strive to post insightful comments. Add "/s" when you're being sarcastic (and don't use it to break rule no. 3).
  6. If you link to paywalled information, please provide also a link to a freely available archived version. Alternatively, try to find a different source.
  7. Light-hearted content, memes, and posts about your European everyday belong in other communities.
  8. Don't evade bans. If we notice ban evasion, that will result in a permanent ban for all the accounts we can associate with you.
  9. No posts linking to speculative reporting about ongoing events with unclear backgrounds. Please wait at least 12 hours. (E.g., do not post breathless reporting on an ongoing terror attack.)
  10. Always provide context with posts: Don't post uncontextualized images or videos, and don't start discussions without giving some context first.

(This list may get expanded as necessary.)

Posts that link to the following sources will be removed

Unless they're the only sources, please also avoid The Sun, Daily Mail, any "thinktank" type organization, and non-Lemmy social media. Don't link to Twitter directly, instead use xcancel.com. For Reddit, use old:reddit:com

(Lists may get expanded as necessary.)

Ban lengths, etc.

We will use some leeway to decide whether to remove a comment.

If need be, there are also bans: 3 days for lighter offenses, 7 or 14 days for bigger offenses, and permanent bans for people who don't show any willingness to participate productively. If we think the ban reason is obvious, we may not specifically write to you.

If you want to protest a removal or ban, feel free to write privately to the primary mod account @EuroMod@feddit.org

Fuck them. They're just bluffing and I hope the EU doesn't cave in.

US and Qatar will still sell ALL the gas the EU needs, because it won't be easy to find another huge market where to sell it.

Like these fucking greedy bastards have any principles and would go "oh we won't make any compromises and we will better have lower profits than sell you the gas".

No, even if it costs them some money to abide by the EU rules, greedy bastards will never pass on the opportunity of getting more rich.

After the EU Commission capitulated like a house of cards, faster than their own shadow, to Trumps' big-tariff-stick backed demands that extremelly dangerous and highly poluting American trucks were allowed in the EU, obviously more and more demands to "screw the safety, quality of life and health of EU citizens for the profit of American companie" would follow.

Trump's behaviour in just about everything exactly follows the bully pattern (he's not even subtle or sophisticated about it) so him making further and ever more damaging demands, backed by exactly the same threath as worked for him last time around, was not just predictable but pretty much guaranteed.

I also suspect Americans have a lot of blackmail material on members of the EU Commission, most of whom were hardly competent and honest politicians to begin with.

I have no doubt that China are the ones who will come out ahead in all this shit if only because they have an actual spine and American blackmail material doesn't work anywhere as well against the crooks in power there as it does against the crooks we have in power in the EU.

How about you go fuck yourself, Trumpistan?

Incredible how US has become a cliche of every 1990'ish evil character 😅😢

Every Captain Planet villain.

Everyone bagged it saying they're just poorly written characters.

Nope, they were just decades ahead of their time.

"Its implementation could jeopardize existing and future investments, employment, and compliance with recent trade agreements,"

Jfc, they think they know best, and threaten with "here's your potential future if you don't agree with us".

"Venture Global is grateful for the Trump administration’s final approval of CP2, a critical project that will supply American allies with low-cost LNG for decades, support thousands of jobs and greatly benefit the US balance of trade,” Sabel said.

And they're vastly overestimating their prospects, having a mentality of "the US is the greatest nation!".

I have hopes that these people in power will eventually stop their high-horse ravenous capitalism, but I imagine that day will only come after my lifetime...

The demands from this admin are meant to specifically crush the spirit of the EU.

deregulate your car legislation and tear up your pedestrian friendly capitals

deregulate your food safety laws, and allow cheap US slop to destroy the traditional EU food scene (no more gruyère, you're gonna have Cheez Whiz)

deregulate your green sector, time to pump those pollution numbers up

🖕

response the EU is probably going with: 🧎

[–] Ooops@feddit.org 1 points 2 minutes ago

Your illustration is missing the money our corrupt politicians get for that move.

[–] DrCake@lemmy.world 2 points 5 hours ago

So they invest in LNG and then threaten supposed “allies” to protect that investment. You know instead of investing in renewables or anything

So what they want is just at odds with the survival of our civilization. It would be utterly self-destructive to allow that. One can only hope that more "natural" gas facilities explode. As with coal, the only natural place for it is in the ground.

One thing one can do as in individual is consumer's boycott. In our home, we have gradually reduced the heating temperature from 21°C to 18°C. Together with that we moved to a flat with much better insolation, that has cut our heating costs flat out to half - from a 50% of the costs in addition to rent to a mere 20%. It took a little getting used to, I put on a sweater at home and use a blanket when working in home office. But that's a small price when it means that fewer young men, women and childs are killed in Ukraine.

We also placed a flexible camping dish tub in the kitchen sink which only requires 5 liters of warm water instead of 12. Again, a small change but effecting real savings.

And is it so important that we have a surplus of hot water? As long as humanity still needs fuel, it is probably needed more elsewhere. Perhaps some girl in India can be taken to a hospital in time instead. It is a wonderful truth of life that indeed everything is connected. What we do matters.

And last not least, the move has enabled my partner to get rid of her car because of better connections. Again, a lot of money saved.

And any money saved on fuel means also: Less money to companies, people and states which are outright set out to kill us. Why should we pay for crimes against us?

All that is, of course, not a substitute for taking to the streets. It is wrong to behave passively when our civilization is under attack. But money talks too, and it is the only language that some people understand.
