Full on dementia, coming back to this month's later.

New York Times, February 21st, 2026:

Trump invades Iceland

[–] Litebit@lemmy.world 10 points 4 hours ago (1 children)

EU needs Greenland more than US due to security reasons.

[–] Nasan@sopuli.xyz 7 points 1 hour ago

US is the security reason

[–] Nosavingthrow@lemmy.world 12 points 6 hours ago

Germany needs to start cutting ties with the US so they can be on the right side for once.

[–] _Nico198X_@europe.pub 25 points 9 hours ago (3 children)

it's going to be a global holiday when he dies

[–] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 1 points 7 minutes ago

if we have to celebrate his birthday (VD Day here in the US) we'll celebrate VT Day globally

[–] mPony@lemmy.world 9 points 2 hours ago (1 children)

yeah but The Cowards who keep telling him to do this shit will still be alive. It's not like the man came up with this on his own.

[–] Blumpkinhead@lemmy.world 6 points 2 hours ago

Agreed. Trump is just a lightening rod that keeps everyone's outrage focused on him instead of people like Miller and Thiel.

[–] madjo@piefed.social 3 points 6 hours ago

He wants his grubby pedo hands on the resources under the ground in Greenland.

[–] Maverick604@lemmy.ca 5 points 8 hours ago

Just un-redact the Epstein files, you coward!

[–] supersquirrel@sopuli.xyz 32 points 15 hours ago* (last edited 15 hours ago) (9 children)

Can't we just fly Trump to a random ice covered rock and just hire some people to pretend it is Greenland and he can have a little senior assisted living situation inside Trump Castle in Newer New York City, Greenland safely isolated from the rest of us?

[–] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 0 points 6 minutes ago

that sounds like more work than just leaving him in greenland

[–] phutatorius@lemmy.zip 6 points 9 hours ago

To make it more convincing, they could spray-paint some rocks green.

[–] elbiter@lemmy.world 6 points 10 hours ago

It would be so dope to make him believe everyone around him pretends he's president, but he's actually not.

[–] captainlezbian@lemmy.world 9 points 14 hours ago (2 children)

Surely he can't tell the difference between northern Alaska and Greenland

[–] supersquirrel@sopuli.xyz 6 points 13 hours ago* (last edited 13 hours ago)

Aksala-Dnalneerg is the resource rich border region in the far tundras of the north between Alaska and Greenland, it is largely undeveloped because no real estate developer has had the proper vision for it yet (a great flat low expanse with easy access to water).

[–] Rhoeri@lemmy.world 3 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

He can’t tell the difference between a sharpie marker and the NOAA.

Awww, look! I have a little butthurt follower! How adorable!

[–] FenderStratocaster@lemmy.world 1 points 5 hours ago (1 children)

This guy is following me on every comment and harassing me too.

[–] Rhoeri@lemmy.world 1 points 5 hours ago

Yeah. Dude’s a no-lifer. Checked their history, it’s pretty embarrassing.

[–] _cryptagion@anarchist.nexus -1 points 6 hours ago

What are you talking about?

American here. I'm sure annexing Greenland would be very useful to us for all kinds of reasons. I don't want to do it.

Unless the people in Greenland want to become part of the United States, I don't believe we have any more right to declare Greenland ours than Hitler had a right to declare France his, or Russia has a right to declare Ukraine theirs.

If the people of Greenland want to become part of the United States, verified with an election monitored by multiple disinterested third parties, then by all means welcome to the party guys.

However given the timing of this ridiculous idea, I can't help but think the whole thing is just a distraction from the Epstein files.

[–] GojuRyu@lemmy.world 1 points 23 minutes ago

There has been leaks that US intelligence are making moves to influence the greenlandic people using intelligence gathering to find pro secession and US elements in greenland. Any talk of the possibility of greenland joining the US as a real possibility only legitimizes an eventual takeover. Greenland has made it clear that they are not interested and that such talk is an insult and a threat to their sovereignty and self governance, current and future. I don’t think you mean to promote Trumps talking points, so this is just meant to let you know that it indirectly does.

Unless the people in California want to secede from the United States

I wonder how you USians would respond to that.

[–] explodicle@sh.itjust.works 6 points 1 hour ago (1 children)

Californian here, I'd vote yes.

[–] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 1 points 4 minutes ago

As a Califorgreenlandian, i ratify the change that apparently just got voted in.

[–] biotin7@sopuli.xyz 16 points 11 hours ago

I see colonialism is back on the menu of Amerikkkans

[–] icelimit@lemmy.ml 11 points 11 hours ago* (last edited 11 hours ago) (1 children)

Americans also need to have a referendum to allow Greenland to join and Denmark needs to have a referendum to let them go as well, if it is too be all above board, as Greenland is subject to the Danish government.

[–] explodicle@sh.itjust.works 3 points 59 minutes ago

The fact that Denmark would likely respect the Greenlandic vote is proof that they shouldn't leave.

[–] llothar@lemmy.ml 9 points 14 hours ago

That's a very slippery slope. I am sure there are parts of Latvia that would happily join Russia. Or parts of US that would like to cede from the union. This is all but easy.

[–] Rothe@piefed.social 5 points 12 hours ago

How very colonial of you.

Originality points for darts as military target selection, tho. 👌

[–] theneverfox@pawb.social 1 points 5 hours ago

You'd think so, but no. Project 2025 can be traced back through the heritage foundation to the Technocracy movement, which was a bunch of proto-tech bros like Elon's Grandpa

They thought they were the smartest little guys and so they should control all aspects of society. They wanted to carve the world up into economic zones, and they wanted America's to be from the Panama canal to the artic, including Greenland, so they could control shipping through the artic and across the Atlantic

They were really big about shipping lanes, which is why South Africa randomly comes up too

[–] huquad@lemmy.ml 46 points 20 hours ago

That's cool, give up the Epstein files

[–] plateee@piefed.social 15 points 16 hours ago* (last edited 16 hours ago)

Tell me you're slacking off at your day job without telling me you're slacking off at your day job:

Landry, in a post on X, thanked Trump: "It's an honor to serve ... in this volunteer position to make Greenland a part of the U.S. This in no way affects my position as Governor of Louisiana!"

Yes this is a distraction - but we also need to remind ourselves that this shit isn't normal even if it weren't a distraction.

In the middle of the Clinton blow job scandal, Bill didn't go off saying New Brunswick needed to become a state to secure our national supply of bowling balls or some shit.

Trump can be making a distraction and also moving the Overton Window at the same time.
