Why?

Why is every company right now making it impossible to understand what their app does?

I swear to fucking god, I’ve been looking for SAAS products at work to fill a role, they’re all branded as AI and not what the companies actually fucking do.

Office has like a 40 year plus reputation as THE office suite. What the fuck us copilot? That cheap knockoff OpenAI they debuted before it was really?

[–] PostProcess@lemmy.world 216 points 5 days ago (9 children)

Because AI on its own doesn't actually make a return, but by conflating the AI investment with a genuine productivity tool that's making money, you can start to hide your poor choices.

[–] pdxfed@lemmy.world 65 points 5 days ago

It's because when so much money/power has pushed so long for people to make decisions based on money and not logic, we've now arrived at the point where even "the emperor's new clothes" type moments can't rein in the insanity; executives are bonused off this garbage and most employees who do know better--thanks to orgs' own internal propaganda and structures--have given up caring and just publish the garbage and clock out(as they should).

Damn, our customers don't use copilot, but we promised to reach 50% usage in 2026...

That's it... Rename the whole thing to copilot and we achieve our goal!

Why couldn't they just stick with Office... It's 100% explanatory, short, and to the point.

365 never made sense to me. Is it supposed to represent the year? Like available 24/7 but instead it's there for you 365 days of the year? And if that's the case why the fuck would I care? It's software, of course it's available to me whenever I want. It's not a 7/11 hotdog rotisserie.

[–] hperrin@lemmy.ca 46 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago) (1 children)

I think it has to do with how often you pay for it. With Office, you just buy it, then you own it. With Office 365, you have to pay for it 365 days a year. You just never stop paying for it.

Don't confuse it with Microsoft 365 or Microsoft Copilot app ! 😂

[–] pHr34kY@lemmy.world 128 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago) (6 children)

It's been named "Microsoft Office" since 1990. Way to piss 35 years of brand recognition up a wall.

Microsoft is reporting over 600 MILLION user growth on copilot, basically overnight! Wow, very impressive Mr Nadella. You've truly pushed AI adoption forward. Someone get this man a bonus!

[–] TemplaerDude@sh.itjust.works 20 points 4 days ago (4 children)

They are trying so fucking hard, it’s so sad. Especially when everyone saw that report of them slashing AI related metrics because nobody is fucking using it.

I can’t wait to build my new PC and install Linux. Cannot wait.

Excel --> Copilot Calculate (356) App

Word --> Copilot 365 Live Notepad

Outlook --> Team 365 Share Copilot App

PowerPoint --> Visual Copilot App Live

Visio --> untouched

[–] Michal@programming.dev 25 points 4 days ago (1 children)

I genuinely can't tell if it's true or satire 😳

[–] bhamlin@lemmy.world 15 points 4 days ago (1 children)

It's true. Visio is untouched by these changes.

We’re…never going to say any of that. It’s Microsoft 365, or 365 for short. Even that sounds stupid. Office is what people understand, 365 always requires explaining.

MS is so exhausting.

“Let’s take the most recognizable software package name and make it something totally divorced from what the software is supposed to be for.”

There are probably people for whom Microsoft Office is the only desktop software that they use. There are probably many people in procurement that are going to scratch their heads and think twice about signing off on something that sounds like a flight simulator.

This is an opportunity for alternate office suites.

C Suite is in a cult.

Tons of Microsoft senior engineers have been resigning over this kinda shit.

Not getting fired or laid off, though that's happening too... resigning.

Bill Gates himself has expressed significant dissapointment with where the company has gone and is going, thinks AI needs to be optional, its clearly not ready.

... Everyone hates this other than C Suite, who are either psychotically delusional, in an actual AI worshipping cult (you'd be surprised how many tech high ups are in one), or, they simply hate us and want us to die, want to be the overlords of whatever is left after they basically destroy modern civilization.

Don’t really care what they call it, I’m not paying a subscription for software or running anything in the cloud that could just as well run locally. The fact that there are decent open source alternatives means they can do all the dumb shit they want and we don’t have to care.

So all of the Microsoft 365 users become instantly AI users? Microsoft gonna report after months that AI users surged the first months of 2026, stocks gonna go up, shareholders happy.

Will they rename Windows (Winslop) to "CopilotOS"? If yes, I'll nuke Windows 10 (!) from my SSD, then replace it with Manjaro or some similar simplified Arch derivative, as my main OS.

The other day, my mother approached me about Office alternatives. Before she retired, she daily drove Office, but feels like it's changed so much that learning a new program isn't any more friction than keeping up with AI bullshit.

I really like libreoffice honestly. In my job I have to use docs but I find myself copying from libre office most of the time. Prior to that, I used to create all my visuals with office and do my graphs in excel. So I’ve tried a few different ways to do things. Libre reminds me of old school products and I kind of like that. Plus it does what I want with shapes. Which is nice when I need to make visuals. I still use excel though, for now.

"Jerry, could you come into my 365 copilot?" - some boss at Microsoft probably.

Preview of tickets incoming in the next days:

“Do I have Copilot included?” “Is it the same as Copilot in Word?” “Do I need an extra license?” "Where is the Office app?" "Can you install Microsoft Office for me?"
