That just seems like the EU sold a bunch of data to China for $600 million.

But only as it seems.
EU fines is a ladder system. First offence it can be around the 600m. Next one is % of their income worldwide (not profit).
Should they hit hard on the first offence? Maybe, but getting the first strike is not fun either with how this system works.
We've needed a ladder fine system like this in the states for decades.
Here companies break the law and pay if caught as the cost of doing business.
Random question, as Im guessing you are from the states.
How impossible is it actually in pratice to vote in other parties than Democrats and Republicans?
Asking because it seems like you got a hard time changing things, if theres no competition in politics.
Look up Al Gore vs George Bush Jr. in 2000. The lack of a preferential voting system meant that Bush won Florida (and thus the election as a whole) because votes were split on Gore and a left-leaning independent, leaving Bush with the most votes (despite all the greens voters almost certainly wanting Gore over Bush).
ITT: americans being dismissive even though the EU is the only thing actually punishing their shitty megacorps for stepping out of line with fines in the billions
Wow. Sometimes data breaches come from the companies we most expect them from.
If I told myself five years ago about this, I bet they would nod slightly in total lack of surprise.
Cost of doing business.
