I grew up in Ohio in the 90’s and everyone was wearing Hornets or Chicago Bulls gear (head to toe) and Might Ducks hats/shirts.

Yes and realistically the Hornets were because the teal/purple combo went super hard in the 90s especially in the form of outerwear.
San Jose Sharks too. I have a San Jose Sharks hat. I don't know why. I grew up a Blues fan.

Also grew up in Ohio in the 90's, I had two winter coats Ducks and Bulls. Hats, t-shirts, and sweatshirts were all OSU.
The color way on the drip was probably insane bossman. Also, the team clothes was then was legit, like that jacket probably lasted you years and worked well in those mid-west winters.

This is so crazy. I was a kid in the 90s and got a Charlotte Hornets coat for some reason as a gift. Never even watched a basketball game.
Oh damn, I had wiped this from my memory. But yeah, I used to have a Hornets hat in the 90s despite not being a basketball fan.
I figure it was based on their rad colors and hornet design.
This was my squad in NBA jam. Theory confirmed.
I was a Hornets fan back in the 90s, but I also lived in Charlotte, so it was a gimmie. I was pissed when Shinn not only moved them to New Orleans, but took the name with them. Hornet’s Nests are a symbol of Mecklenburg county history and we just let part of that heritage walk away with Shinn. I’m glad we finally got it back.
I mean, I know that many if not most places in the US are named after European ones, but somehow Mecklenburg caught me really off guard just now

North Carolina being one of the original 13 colonies has a lot named after European/British places/people.
Nah, I can’t think of any reason tbh. Just somehow unexpected I guess because I usually only hear it in the name of the german state Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.

That explains the Charlotte Hornets jacket my parents had.
I thought it was because they went to grad school there but you're right, that was the style of the time.
I was a teenager in France and even there some kids had Hornets jackets. No one questioned it.
I was a teen in Colombia, didn't gave a shit about NBA, but had a Hornets cap bought in a gas station during holidays (iirc, they had a wall of NBA hats, but the Hornets was the choose one)
Hornets Starter jacket in like 93.

This was especially true of women. They loved the color scheme. Nearly every woman I knew growing up were Hornets fans if they didn't follow basketball.
Note: I'm saying the colors were popular with women, not that you're a woman if you liked the colors.

I too remember this being the case. I don't even like sports—never even watched a single game until adulthood—and even I was a fan then. They had a cool logo.

Same. I'm from Alaska, and having no local pro teams, I chose Charlotte for the kick ass colors and because of Larry Johnson
Me with the Arizona Coyotes (hockey team). Never seen them play. But I dig the colors and logo more than my actual team, the Sharks.
