Ye Power Trippin' Bastards

1809 readers
204 users here now

This is a community in the spirit of "Am I The Asshole" where people can post their own bans from lemmy or reddit or whatever and get some feedback from others whether the ban was justified or not.

Sometimes one just wants to be able to challenge the arguments some mod made and this could be the place for that.

Posting Guidelines

All posts should follow this basic structure:

  1. Which mods/admins were being Power Tripping Bastards?
  2. What sanction did they impose (e.g. community ban, instance ban, removed comment)?
  3. Provide a screenshot of the relevant modlog entry (don’t de-obfuscate mod names).
  4. Provide a screenshot and explanation of the cause of the sanction (e.g. the post/comment that was removed, or got you banned).
  5. Explain why you think its unfair and how you would like the situation to be remedied.

Rules

Expect to receive feedback about your posts, they might even be negative.

Make sure you follow this instance's code of conduct. In other words we won't allow bellyaching about being sanctioned for hate speech or bigotry.

YPTB matrix channel: For real-time discussions about bastards or to appeal mod actions in YPTB itself.

MODERATORS

I made a number of comments in the post. @Serinus@lemmy.world is now policing how many you are allowed to have.

Here is the Announcement thread in general, in case you are unaware.

Serinus also claims 'Misinformation' for these comments

Ding ding ding. Hexbear and other instances get consideration and talked about behind the scenes. Anarchist.nexus was defederated by MrKaplan privately without any consideration at all from other admins. Kaplan even went out of their way to contact admins of other instances to attempt to get them to defederate from anarchist.nexus as well. When pressed about the popularity of anarchist.nexus, Kaplan then said "I don't know how you define relatively large, on fedidb they're listed as having 71 monthly active users" which led to someone else saying "That's top 10 for Piefed servers, according to fedidb. It would be top 40 for lemmy. We aren't swimming in the pacific here on the Fediverse. This is a small pond to begin with." A small pond that MrKaplan desperately wants to be the only big fish in. # Lemmy.world is using their position to bully smaller communities.

This is not, in fact, misinformation. I listed the screenshots in another comment directly proving this as correct. Here is that screenshot.

Correct. Also, this is quite important, but MrKaplan didn't talk to anyone else about this either. There was an instant and knee jerk response by the admins for this but they took literal weeks to do absolutely nothing about Jordan while saying they were looking into it for weeks. They, quite clearly, have made priorities.

Also not misinformation. Here is the screenshot from Kaplan admitting they never messaged anyone.

Anything to say, Serinus?

Edit: Of course he doesn't. He just banned me for 'sealioning and harassment' for this YPTB post.

If those assholes could go back Reddit I'd be so happy

Major PTB from those in charge at LW. I left lemmy.world a long time ago because of behavior like this back when they were having a feud over the existence of piracy communities. I had a gut feeling they would sooner or later start mass banning people or defederate due to stupid reasons. And it seems I was right about that even if I wasn't right on the specifics of what. Honestly I want no part in this. It's why I don't really touch lemmy.world at all anymore.

[–] eugenevdebs@lemmy.dbzer0.com 28 points 1 day ago (8 children)

Serinus is a Zionist moron who thinks anyone who doesn't obey their sugar daddy power admin must be deleted. PTB for sure.

Who know they the person who supported flat world being discussed in equal measures as reality itself was a bad guy?

[–] Goferking0@ttrpg.network 15 points 1 day ago (1 children)

And now they're banning people for just pointing out they're bullying others and other instances lol

Pointing this out and how he's trying to deflect away from previous terrible decisions got me banned too. Guess I just needed to be a flat earther to have my comments kept

https://lemmy.world/modlog/5?page=1&actionType=All&modId=108149

Edit, apparently people being upset are just doing an agenda. And it's okay for world to do it since it's against a small instance....

SerinusM

It’s mostly half a dozen very loud people who have a particular agenda.

The previously defederated instance has 165 total accounts, lifetime.

As tired as I am of the drama, this is classic PTB! It's the perfect example of it!

The way federation is protected from this shit happening is by people spreading out. Don't join a popular instance. You can still interact with them without being a member of their instance. If one instance gets power, like Lemmy.world, you just end up in another situation like Reddit, where they can control the platform. You should definitely leave, if you aren't already planning to. Find a small instance that does what you want.

[–] NooBoY@lemmy.dbzer0.com 28 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Tbh it is a quick a painless process to jump from .world to another instance. I only done this the other day from .world and boy howdy the amount of content that I can see. The fediverse feels new again.

[–] Aceticon@lemmy.dbzer0.com 27 points 1 day ago (2 children)

I did exactly that when lemmy.world leaked my user registration e-mail address to Israel (I! Kid! You! Not!) as I was loudly anti-Genocide and critical of Zionism and I started receiving invitations to an online "learn about Israel" event in it.

It was a very easy transition.

[–] hypnicjerk@lemmy.world 17 points 1 day ago (1 children)

this deserves its own post wtf

[–] Aceticon@lemmy.dbzer0.com 14 points 1 day ago

There's not really much I can prove, especially if I don't want to reveal much about my identity.

[–] Deceptichum@quokk.au 12 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Holy shit, got any more info you can add?

[–] Aceticon@lemmy.dbzer0.com 15 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (2 children)

Well, according to what was written in the e-mail it was from a Tel-Aviv based organisation. Also it was in my native language, which isn't English.

That said, they only sent 2 or 3 e-mails and then stopped.

As far as I understand only Lemmy administrators of a user's instance have access to user registration e-mail address, not moderators.

All of that also kinda dovetails with the pro-Zionist tone of all the main forums in that instance (especially back then, when it used to be incredibly common to have your posts moderated away as "anti-semitic" in those forums for criticizing Israel) and, as shown here, at least one of their Administrators being an overt Zionist.

Further, it makes a lot of sense for Lemmy.world to be a target for infiltration for state actors since it's the biggest instance of a left-of-center social media system and hosts several of its biggest forums, so frankly none of that shit was all that surprising.

[–] Flatworm7591@lemmy.dbzer0.com 12 points 1 day ago

This is very disturbing.

Yeah, I highly recommend starting your switch to another instance immediately. There is a discussion happening behind the scenes for a number of other major instances to defederate from lemmy.world if LW does indeed go through with the defederation from dbzer0 because, at that point, Kaplan will have proven a few things.

  1. That Kaplan/LW admins value individual users like themselves over the entirety of an instances users

  2. That Kaplan/LW admins are not willing to engage in the same type of reporting behavior that they ask others to do

  3. That Kaplan/LW admins will be taking nuclear options in order to bully smaller instances into bowing to what they want you to do

  4. That Kaplan/LW admins will be policing what you think as they have literally zero evidence that there is any support for Luminous' behavior and, in fact, has been pushback. It's so ridiculous that Jordan Lund said this in their moderator chat for Lemmy.world. A chat that I just sit in and quietly drink my tea watching them lie boldfaced.

The welcome mat is ready for you on DB0

[–] absolutetupperware@lemmy.today 41 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Zionists sure are fragile beings. Call for genocide of mostly children just so you can prop up a bunch of instagram houses on their corpses but can't take a little death threat? glass houses and whatnot i suppose. i'm glad i switched off of it when i did, people should seriously stop recommending it for beginners.

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 1 points 17 hours ago

do they side with the tankie instances? it seems like they agree on alot of things besides who they support.

[–] Alaskaball@hexbear.net 41 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (3 children)

Kaplan even went out of their way to contact admins of other instances to attempt to get them to defederate from anarchist.nexus as well.

I never got an email.

I feel left out of the drama kitty-cri

[–] Stamets@lemmy.dbzer0.com 39 points 1 day ago (2 children)

I saw the post from Kaplan and immediately just started pinching the bridge of my eyes. It's like the admins of LW are hellbent on doing everything they possibly can to make every situation they get into as much of a dumpster fire as possible.

[–] Alaskaball@hexbear.net 29 points 1 day ago (4 children)

I mean if they really want to pour gas on the fire - not that we'd let them lol - they should try to refederate with hexbear then immediately demand us to defederate from the anarchists or else be preeptively defederated as a last resort again

[–] Stamets@lemmy.dbzer0.com 20 points 1 day ago (1 children)

If they want to pour gas on the fire they'll just follow their natural instincts, apparently.

[–] Alaskaball@hexbear.net 15 points 1 day ago

I eagerly await the next chapter of the garbage fire in slow motion

I would be in gavor of you temp defederating us in favor of .world. Imagine the bits. Oh! We could share custody! Imagine of the potential!

Also PTB PTB PPB PTB

Im sorry. Do you want a conspiratorial gossipy hug?

PTB for sure. This whole situation is one big shit show. I really hope people don't let them get away with this just because they're a big instance. I really hope some kind of defederation or action happens as a result.

[–] maam@feddit.uk 39 points 1 day ago (1 children)

PTB, I always knew that Serinus was biased, stuck up and irrational.

I think all of LW's staff are in some way or they wouldn't be there.

[–] Mindfury@hexbear.net 22 points 1 day ago

PTB as per usual for redditworlders

Oh yeah, this is the good shit! I gobbled a bowl of oatmeal reading through the whole thing.
I am satisfied.

Thank you for the meal! 👍

I don’t get it. If I’m on lw, and it is de federated from dbzero, how am I seeing this post which is on dbzero server.

[–] Stamets@lemmy.dbzer0.com 40 points 1 day ago

Because they haven't. They're threatening to. I'd recommend clicking on that link to the announcement post and checking out the comments.

The tl;dr is that they had defederated from anarchist.nexus (the piefed version of dbzer0) and was threatening to defederate from dbzer0 despite never actually talking with anyone from either instance before beginning the defederation proceedings. After a day, Kaplan made the announcement post which has been getting overwhelmingly negative reactions to the decision on behalf of LW Admins. This led to Kaplan reversing the defederation for anarchist.nexus but, as the announcement post states, is still considering defederating from dbzer0 and if they do so will also defederate from anarchist.nexus again. They have literally no reason for this defederation at this stage.

[–] Mac@mander.xyz 21 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Also, just FYI, defederation has some unintuitive behavior. IIRC, you will not receive content from the defederated instance but if your instance-mates post there, you will see that content, since it's actually from your own instance. Something like that, anyway.

Takes a momemt. Might be announced in chat before typed in terminal. Isnt final yet. I still say we defederate them first. I think i already have all their subs blocked.

[–] maam@feddit.uk 9 points 1 day ago

The aforementioned defederation decision is still pending.
