This is just another stupid thing that this lame arse incompetent govt is trying to do, why do we copy things that have been proven don't work. Aussie is having problems with this law and teens will always find away around it, look at the porn sites that have been blocked in some U.S states (its called using a VPN) and pornhub had a good reason not to collect peoples government issued ID, this is another form of Surveillance for a govt

The other issue is handing over personal information to social media companies, who have used your information to profit from by selling ito data brokers, or the highest bidder that could be br used againt you eventuall, Iis not something our politicians shoukd be willing to do.They are trying to close the gate after the horse has bolted, A ban is not the answer. I'm not sure what is, but that's why there needs to be discussion and education

Why not, it worked for porn, alcohol, and video games right? Teens don't consume those anymore, so I'm sure teenagers will return to the old days of showing up on each other's doorsteps right away.

Meantime, the service can continue unimpeded for the rest of us. Adults can continue to get their daily AI slop and political scaremongering. Amen

At this point in time, the bill is simply a proposal by one member of parliament. It goes in the biscuit tin, and only gets looked at if it gets drawn out at random.

To get prioritised, it needs support from all the parties in government. Our far right "deregulate and downsize government" party would have to support it, and it would be a very telling move if they did.

I suspect it was thrown out to distract from the (removal of) pay equity bill being rushed through in 24 hours and the Regulatory Standards Bill with 0.3% of support from select committee submitters being rammed through as well.

This is one of the most deeply undemocratic NZ governments of recent time, but given Act are in it, and Willis et al are Atlas network aligned neo-liberal fundamentalists that's no surprise as that's the whole point of neo-liberalism.
