Is this the beginning of the Butlerian Jihad?

[–] InternetCitizen2@lemmy.world 4 points 6 hours ago

And the Orange Catholic Bible

[–] jlow@slrpnk.net 22 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

Just disarm billionaires from their money.

[–] YeOldGrim@lemmy.world 7 points 15 hours ago

Why would he disarm himself?

[–] kilgore_trout@feddit.it 54 points 1 day ago (2 children)

major manifesto

Why dumb down proper news reporting?
The "manifesto" is called Encyclical letter, and is the classical format of publications of the Catholic Pope.

[–] pachrist@lemmy.world 25 points 21 hours ago

Because manifesto gets type-cast as crazy.

[–] SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca 9 points 21 hours ago

AI wrote the article.

I grew up so ideologically opposed to these guys that I hate it when they make a good point. 😩

[–] IratePirate@feddit.org 12 points 20 hours ago

You know it's a strange year when both the Mullah regime of Iran and the Pope of the Catholic church put something out there and you can't immediately disagree...

[–] oce@jlai.lu 14 points 23 hours ago (1 children)

They are socially conservative, but they have been fairly consistent at asking people not to kill each other for the past decades.

[–] frostedtrailblazer@lemmy.zip 9 points 20 hours ago

I think the leadership is less socially conservative compared to the past, but they represent some very conservative bases so they more or less are having to crawl progress forward or they risk a schism.

The previous pope, Pope Francis, stacked the Vatican with more progressive leaning cardinals. I believe Pope Leo will be following in Pope Francis’ footsteps in terms of appointments.

Sir, I tip my hat in your general direction. That was, as they say, a cracking joke.

[–] FiniteBanjo@feddit.online 51 points 1 day ago (29 children)

I stand behind Leo's message 100%,

but you have to admit it is kind of funny that the original gaslighter organization which uses positive reinforcement to brainwash people into worshiping a deity of their own creation is trying to stop tech companies from doing the exact same thing, lol.

[–] PabloSexcrowbar@piefed.social 3 points 20 hours ago

I've heard there are AI worshipping cults now. I wonder if that's got anything to do with it.

As much as I hate the organization, I want to forgive the people who run it. I want to believe they do it cuz they're brainwashed too.

[–] FiniteBanjo@feddit.online 1 points 19 hours ago

Some cardinals and popes were better than others, thats for sure.

We in the USA have a issue with secular and non secular idol worship... The pope is a CEO... Kinda like his own little corpo kingdom... kinda like these billionaire welfare queen pdfile anarcho capitalist libertarian tech ceos..and it seems like both parties can't keep their hands off the kids. Like musky boy is trying to create or already created. These catholic clergy are just grifters and fraudsters. It is sad to watch the elderly spiral into madness and these vampires love taking advantage of the weak while posing as "the good guy".... the world is a inversion of what people actually believe. It is hard to keep your head on straight with such a heavy knowledge base. I looked into the abyss and it spit in my eye.

The pope's AI encyclical was good reading and reminds us to center human dignity, compassion, etc. Lots of ethics to explore with regard to AI and related cultural phenomena.

[–] melsaskca@lemmy.ca 8 points 1 day ago

"Fuck the ethical considerations and rush it through!" - most any american business person.

[–] eestileib@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 21 hours ago (6 children)

So when my priest raped me and the church protected him, that was an example of the ethical views and compassion and respect for human dignity you're talking about?

I guess I always have more to learn from this amazing institution, like how I'm an abomination for being queer.

[–] JangleJack@lemmy.world 2 points 12 hours ago

I am not here to defend that institution at all.

[–] anzo@programming.dev 4 points 20 hours ago

I am sorry you had gone through that experience. The only church that illuminates at all is the one we can set on fire :')

PS. This thread can easily spin on another reiteration of the arguments around "separating the art from the artist". That text on AI may have a certain sympathy to some.. I haven't read it. After this post, I thought "maybe I should?". Thanks to your comment I got centered back in my perspective: "nah. the pope can say whatever he wants to. I won't be his supporter nor audience."

This might be the first time I agree with a Pope.

[–] ShotDonkey@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago
