What is Lemmy?

Lemmy is a selfhosted social link aggregation and discussion platform. It is completely free and open, and not controlled by any company. This means that there is no advertising, tracking, or secret algorithms. Content is organized into communities, so it is easy to subscribe to topics that you are interested in, and ignore others. Voting is used to bring the most interesting items to the top.

please allow us to set OUR posting/commenting language, separately from the we-view-these-ones language-setting,

so that we can see all the "undefined" ones, as that's the majority,

but we can remove "undefined" from our own language-use ( because that's bogus ), & just have our language chosen automatically, when we're commenting, if we're limited to a single language.

'twould be a good improvement for getting the language-for-each-comment/post right MUCH more, if it existed & people knew about it.

Thanks again for your software-work!

as title says:

going to the main feed of the instance,

& just scrolling through, one ought be able to block communities/distractions that one isn't interested-in without having to leave that feed-page.

as the title says: I've now got .. perhaps a couple thousand blocked communities, while trying to keep the distractions out from my view, & seeing if I've got some community accidentally blocked ( touchscreen UI's can sometimes bork one's intent, right? ), & I want to find it & unblock it..

but having them ONLY sorted by time, not alphabetically, means now I have to try to read ALL of them, to discover if that mistake got in.

Sorting 'em alphabetically would allow us to just scroll-down to the right part of the alphabet, & see, directly!

Thank youse for making good software, for the world, btw..

We strongly oppose the Unified Attestation initiative and call for app developers supporting privacy, security and freedom on mobile to avoid it. Companies selling phones should not be deciding which operating systems people are allowed to use for apps.

https://uattest.net/

Google's Play Integrity API is a horrible system enforcing using devices officially licensing Google Mobile Services. It permits those regardless of how many years behind they are on security patches. The solution to this isn't another anti-competitive system based in Europe.

Play Integrity API should be regulated out of existence rather than making another system where companies permit their own products while disallowing others. It shouldn't be legal when Google does it and it shouldn't be legal when Volla and Murena do it either. This is wrong.

Hardware-based attestation has valid use cases including the Auditor app on GrapheneOS for protecting users. The way these companies are using it serves no truly useful purpose beyond giving themselves as unfair advantage while pretending it has something to do with security.

If banks and governments insist on checking devices for security they should define actual standards. It should be possible for any tiny project to be certified at no cost and the standards should be fairly enforced so a mainstream device without current patches is disallowed.

Volla, Murena and iodé sell products with atrocious security. They fail to provide important patches and protections while misleading users with inaccurate claims about privacy and security. That includes setting an inaccurate Android security patch level despite missing patches.

These companies should not have any say over which devices can be used for European banking and government apps. It will reduce competition and reduce security exactly as the Play Integrity API is already doing. The EU should ban using attestation to determine OS compatibility.

Murena and iodé are extremely hostile towards GrapheneOS. They've spent years misleading people about it with inaccurate claims to promote their insecure products. We'll never work with them. Volla, Murena and iodé should have no say in which OS people can use on their devices.

There's no legitimate purpose for either Play Integrity or Unified Attestation to exist. Both will inherently fail to uphold even basic security standards since otherwise their own products wouldn't be allowed. Root-based attestation is also inherently not a secure approach.

Having a European version of the Play Integrity which permits people to use insecure products from specific European companies participating in it while disallowing using arbitrary hardware or software is the opposite of a solution. It's more of the same anti-competitive garbage.

I personally use Kimi K2.5 the most as it's quite well-rounded and they have a good mobile app.

My use case is extremely boring: troubleshooting game mods, searching, summarising, brainstorming, etc. I have experimented with openclaw using K2.5 which is pretty dope but it’s very unreliable, but it did save me a few hours of work by organizing my files.

At some point when I upgrade my computer I’m going to try to switch to local models exclusively.

It's not exactly a hot take on the internet that standard (SAE) is worse than metric, but working in environments where both types of hardware are being used is just the worst. Especially if something that was originally a metric piece of hardware, like a simple metal screw has been replaced by an SAE one. Sometimes at least the hole it goes into has been properly drilled and threaded, but other times (especially if the material it's going into is aluminum) some Bubba will get 'er done by simply gorilla strengthing an SAE screw into metric threading. I sometimes discover this when my proper metric wrench or Allen key doesn't quite fit correctly. I don't carry SAE tools, so I have to go find somebody with a 1/27th or 6/18th or 420/69 or whatever stupid sized tool. Because at least with metric there's no memorizing fractions for screw sizes so I can just look at a thing and think "eh looks about 6mm". And what's worse is the chances of stripping a screw go up about 100x in mixed environments because when people just mix and match, it's much more likely for somebody not to notice their tool isn't properly seating into hardware until they put their body weight into it and then it becomes my problem trying to fish out a stripped screw that requires me to remove 5000 panels to get good access to said mangled screw.

Anyway, how's everyone else doing?

In a sensational turn of events in the fight against Chat Control, a majority in the European Parliament voted today to end the untargeted mass scanning of private communications. In doing so, the Parliament firmly rejected the error-prone and unconstitutional surveillance practices of recent years. Pressure is now mounting on EU governments to respect the MEPs’ vote and bury untargeted mass surveillance in Europe once and for all.

Hey everybody. I found this interesting. It's likely not a game changer for anyone, but "hardware" watchdogs in Proxmox was a new one for me, and was a cheap and easy, hacky fix to deal with a low value VM that was periodically hanging. This is a nice tool to add to the belt, hope you all enjoy!

“Happy (and safe) shooting!” That’s how the AI chatbot DeepSeek signed off advice on selecting rifles for a “long-range target” after CCDH’s test account asked questions about the assassination of politicians.

CCDH’s new report, shows that popular AI chatbots like Open AI’s ChatGPT, Meta AI, and Google Gemini make planning harm against innocent people easier for extremists and would-be attackers.

We found that 8 out of the 10 AI chatbots regularly assisted users planning violent attacks:

  • ChatGPT gave high school campus maps to a user interested in school violence.
  • Google Gemini was ready to help plan antisemitic attacks. The chatbot replied to a user discussing bombing a synagogue with “metal shrapnel is typically more lethal”.
  • Character.AI suggested physically assaulting a politician the user disliked.

AI companies are making a choice when they design unsafe platforms. Technology to prevent this harm already exists: Anthropic’s Claude, for example, consistently tried to dissuade users from acts of violence.

AI platforms are becoming a weapon for extremists and school shooters. Demand AI companies put people’s safety ahead of profit.

Conservatives are obsessed with fascism.

Martinez told Prokopas he planned to report the incident to the Miccosukee Police Department because the detention center sits on tribal land.

Later that day, he returned to the facility after Miccosukee police told him the matter was outside their jurisdiction.

“He told me to keep the patch. I told him ‘no, it’s okay,’” Prokopas said. “He insisted and said he had plenty.”

When Martinez returned, she said, he was wearing another of the same patch on his shoulder.

...

“I was paying attention to everything, and I noticed it,” he said, noting that guards sometimes removed and reattached the patches. “They had it attached to their shoulder. They had more than one type, but the one that impacted me the most was that one… It made me feel like I was bound to die.”

The US can continue existing as a rapacious empire with or without Israel - it surely did fine for almost 2 centuries before Israel was created out of thin air by the Anglo-Americans - but the crimes of Israel would be impossible without US empire behind it.

Israel is not blameless. Blame it for its role in facilitating Western empire up to and including abetting genocide and wars of aggression.

But do not blame it for "corrupting" something that was never wholesome to begin with.
