“Our olives are everything for us: the backbone of our economy, in our homes, on our tables, in our culture. These last years have brought nothing but misery to us,” says Hassan, 68.

The situation is the same across much of the West Bank. Since the beginning of October, the Palestinian Farmers’ Union (PFU) has logged more than 50 incidents of violence or destruction.

A consumer advocate says testing has revealed some children's toys being sold by online shopping giant Temu are unsafe.

More than 160 products, including children's toys, have been tested by several European consumer groups in Germany, France, Denmark and Belgium.

The test sold through Temu and Shein found more than 60 percent of the products investigated from both online stores had failures.

The worst categories were products marketed as suitable for children younger than 3 years old and USB electronic chargers.

Consumer NZ research writer Belinda Castles told Midday Report the research showed some products failed safety testing.

"It was quite concerning actually. There was a number of failures," she said.

The products were tested against European Union (EU) standards and were tested for mechanical, chemical and electrical compliance.

Mechanical safety issues were found in 30 of the 54 toys tested, Castles said.

"They were looking for harmful substances, so chemicals that shouldn't be there, and also mechanical and electrical safety and labelling requirements. And what they found was that 18 of those 54 toys actually had high severity non-compliance issues," she said.

[...]

Warning and compliance label issues were also found in 26 of the 27 Temu products, alongside all 27 Shein products tested.

"Although that's obviously not as serious as sort of the mechanical and the electrical failures, it's still a concern if they're not providing consumers with the correct information about how to use those products safely," Castles said.

A case study in the New Zealand Medical Journal (NZMJ) said surgeons at Tauranga Hospital had to remove part of the boy's bowel after he ate between 80 and 100 of the small but powerful magnets.

The magnets were banned in New Zealand.

The report by NZMJ claimed the magnets were purchased from Temu.

"It just highlights the real difficulty in these online international platforms. People are still able to buy from them," Castles said.

Consumer "strongly recommended" not purchasing children's toys and USB chargers from Shein and Temu.

Having grown up in the northern hemisphere I have a particular mental image of Father Christmas/Santa Claus/Saint Nick/whatever. It involves a lot of clothing, topped with a lined robe. Y'know, typical cold weather gear.

In the southern hemisphere, do you get the same? If so, how come the poor guys cosplaying as him don't overheat?

Hey all,

im looking to ditch the stock rom and put a rom on that doesn't have any proprietary stuff on it. i have a Moto G Stylus 5G 2024, and from XDA, it seems that there is not only root, but also GSI roms. do GSI roms still contain google binaries (play store, play services, etc...) or is it similar to a AOSP rom where its just a bare android image with no apps other than the very basic stuff? Sadly i can't afford getting a pixel atm or another device that can run mobile linux or graphene, so just wanted to see if this was viable.

Let's say i have a reasonable hardware and want to create an n number of virtual machines inside eachother for no particular reason but to experiment, i have a few questions:

What would be the best way to approach the problem?

What are weird problems that i would encounter?

After how many levels would my computer become unusable?

Would the loss of performance from a level to another be linear or exponential?

What's the deepest level of nesting reached?

Goli Kouhkan, 25, on death row for seven years for killing her abusive husband, has until December to settle with the victim’s family

A child bride faces execution in Iran for the killing of her abusive husband unless she can raise 10bn tomans (about £80,000) to pay off the victim’s family by a December deadline.

Goli Kouhkan, 25, has been on death row in Gorgan central prison in northern Iran for the past seven years. She was 18 when she was arrested over the death of her husband in May 2018, and sentenced to qisas – retribution-in-kind – for participation in the killing.

Human rights activists say the case is emblematic of the discriminatory treatment of women and minorities in Iran, where child marriage is legal and there are limited legal protections against domestic violence.

Nigeria has said it would welcome assistance from the United States in fighting armed groups, as long as its territorial integrity is respected, as US President Donald Trump continued to threaten military action in the West African country over what he claimed was the persecution of Christians there.

Officials and experts in Nigeria on Sunday denied Trump’s claims of mass killings of Christians, noting that Boko Haram and al-Qaeda-linked groups target people of all faiths in Africa’s most populous country.

But Trump – who has directed his government to prepare for possible “fast” military action in Africa’s most populous country – doubled down on the threat on Sunday, saying he was he was considering a range of military options in Nigeria.

It unfolded in plain sight over 18 months. The city of El Fasher in the Darfur region of Sudan, besieged by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), fell to the militia group last week, and what has followed is a catastrophe.

Mass killings are under way. There are reports that in one maternity hospital alone almost 500 people – patients and their families – were killed. The few that managed to escape tell of summary executions of civilians. The RSF has embarked on a killing spree of civilians so severe that images of blood saturating the ground have been picked up by satellite. The speed and intensity of the killings in the immediate aftermath of the fall of El Fasher has already been compared by war monitors to the first 24 hours of the Rwandan genocide.

A computer game-style drone attack system has gone “viral” among Ukrainian military units and is being extended to reconnaissance, artillery and logistics operations, the nation’s first deputy prime minister, Mykhailo Fedorov, has told the Guardian.

Drone teams competing for points under the “Army of Drones Bonus System” killed or wounded 18,000 Russian soldiers in September, with 400 drone units now taking part in the competition, up from 95 in August, Ukrainian officials said.

The system, which launched more than a year ago, rewards soldiers who achieve strikes with points that can be exchanged to buy more weapons in an “Amazon-for-war” online store called Brave1 filled with more than 100 different drones, autonomous vehicles and other drone war material. It has a leaderboard topped by teams with names such as Achilles and Phoenix.

The brazen daytime heist at the Louvre was carried out by petty criminals rather than professionals from the world of organised crime, the Paris prosecutor has said, describing two of the suspects as a couple with children.

The assertion comes two weeks after thieves parked a stolen truck outside the world’s most-visited museum, used a furniture lift to reach the first floor, then smashed their way into one of the museum’s most ornate rooms. Less than seven minutes later, they escaped on scooters with crown jewels worth an estimated €88m (£76m).

Which of the three is best for someone who wants things extremely simple but secure? From what I can tell CasaOS is the simplest, but Cosmos is the most secure, and I think Yunohost falls in the middle?

Hello fine gentlemen, gentlewomen and gentleothers.

I have a Ukrainian keyboard where 2 keys don't match with the Ukrainian layout and, unfortunately, I can't exactly swap them nor edit the firmware or anything of the sort. This is a problem for me because I can't touch type on my own layout let alone a layout I'm still learning where everything is.

Does anyone know a program where I can edit a keyboard layout, preferably graphically (I love CLI and TUIs but this task would be easier graphically for me), on KDE Plasma with wayland?

Thanks in advance

A 6.3-magnitude earthquake struck near the northern Afghan city of Mazar-e Sharif early on Monday, killing at least 20 people, injuring hundreds and damaging the city's historic Blue Mosque, authorities said, with the death toll likely to rise.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake hit at a depth of 28 kilometres near Mazar-e Sharif, which has a population of about 523,000.

At least 20 people were killed and around 320 were injured, Health Ministry spokesperson Sharfat Zaman said, but officials warned the toll could rise as rescue teams reached remote villages in the worst-hit provinces of Balkh and Samangan.

Australia’s richest person, Gina Rinehart, has been spotted at Donald Trump’s Halloween party at his Mar-a-Lago resort.

The mining billionaire, who has never shied from publicly praising the controversial two-time US president, was seen speaking at Trump’s ear while he read a piece of paper in a social media post at the lavish affair at the weekend, as first reported by the Nine newspapers.

The image, posted by the former US attorney for the District of Columbia, Jeanine Pirro, also included the US secretary of state, Marco Rubio.
