Tell that to my gut. You get onions in there, mushrooms, etc I'll be absolutely crippled with cramps, gas, and worse.

I'm glad people love onions. I don't even mind the taste. But you know what I like more? NOT being stuck in agony on the toilet for hours.

Have you tried growing the hell up?

IBS? SIBO? Any other diagnose?

[–] frozenfoxx@lemmy.world 2 points 11 hours ago

SIBO, been battling it for awhile

If you don’t like durian, you should try growing up in a South East Asian family.

[–] grrgyle@slrpnk.net 10 points 1 day ago (3 children)

Wait but does the paper towel thing work?

[–] Iron_Lynx@lemmy.world 4 points 21 hours ago

Can't say with certainty, though I have heard it recommended to me by someone who should know.

However, my preferred trick is to place the cutting board near an extraction fan, set said fan to high, and trying not to bend too much over the cutting board while chopping my onions.

[–] m3t00@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

never tried it

[–] AnUnusualRelic@lemmy.world 1 points 23 hours ago

Very unlikely.

[–] tutter@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 23 hours ago (1 children)

if you are an extrenely picky eater, honestly your loss, thats probably difficult socially and a lot of banger foods youll miss.

making a big deal out of any adults personal preferences? total dick move. Why yuck on their yum, as they say. But ableist? In specific cases where its directly caused by a condition, sure, but lest be real for a sec, weve all encountered people that are picky because theyve never been exposed to new things. The 'i dont like it' before ever having tasted that dish, crowd.

and in that way, for example insisting on introducing new foods to children to broarden their pallette? Calling that ableist feels silly and unproductive in several ways.

my brain is crashing out a bit over all the blanket statements being thrown around here in the comments

[–] lightnsfw@reddthat.com 1 points 17 hours ago

I got over the premptive "I don't like it" shit but I'm still a picky eater. I just straight do not like the taste or texture of a lot of things. My palette has expanded since I was a kid at least.

[–] dewritoninja@pawb.social 14 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I didn't like onions as a kid, turns out my mother just sucks at cooking.

[–] BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today 5 points 1 day ago

I thought my parents' cooking was great, until I grew up and started cooking myself, and discovered I had a talent for it. Now I realize my parents couldn't cook at all.

Now life is reversed, and I'm taking care of my Mom (Dad's gone), and I do ALL the cooking.

I still despise onions though. That wasn't my Mom's cooking, I just despise onions. And green peppers.

It isn't about growing up, onions just taste terrible to some people, the way cilantro or asparagus tastes bad to some. I know a guy who is fine with onions, but feels the way I feel toward them about CUCUMBERS, of all things. They basically taste like water, but he can't stand to be in the same room with one.

[–] KuroiKaze@lemmy.world 8 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (8 children)

I know the cilantro example is famous, but as a super taster and having other people with the gene onions are very divisive. For me, anything more than a hint is overpoweringly disgusting and the idea of actually biting into one directly fills me with dread.

Onion powder and garlic powder are both very preferable to the actual substance taste wise.

If you know someone in your life that really likes diet soda and other artificially sweetened things and even prefers it to the regular, they just might be a super taster.

If you know someone that finds wine, beer, tea and coffee horrifically bitter to the point that they can't even understand how you enjoy it. They may also be a super taster.

If you know someone that complains Seltzer's like white claw and lacroix are absurdly bitter and completely disgusting. That is likely because they can taste a profile called bitter two, which is prevalent in these things because they are a super taster.

I know nobody will read this and learn to quit bitching at people about what they like, but I figured I'd at least try.

Now that I'm done being reasonable:

Why don't you stop pussyfooting around with weak bitch shit like onions and actually use some real fucking spices from India and Mexico? Onions are for mayo loving losers afraid of burning their tender tongues, miss me with that shit.

[–] moakley@lemmy.world 2 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

I'm a super taster as well. Raw onion is a hard no for me, but caramelized onions are like a cheat code for making every meal delicious.

But you've got the artificial sweetener thing backwards. Super tasters tend to prefer real sugar and find the fake stuff cloying and unpleasant. I'd bite into an onion like it was an apple before I'd drink a diet soda.

Also, mayo is delicious.

[–] KuroiKaze@lemmy.world 1 points 16 hours ago

Really every super taster i know drinks diet, soda like it's going out of style. And cooking an onion works for people that are not super tasters but ones that are still usually overwhelmed from the small sample size I've met over the years.

Were you a smoker at any point perhaps?

[–] 5318008@lemmy.ml 7 points 1 day ago (1 children)

shit like onions and actually use some real fucking spices from India and Mexico

... but... India eats a lot of onions... because as great as the spices are, onions are also great. You can have both. You should have both.

[–] AlfredoJohn@sh.itjust.works 1 points 18 hours ago

I tried some pickled onions from an Idian place near me and while I generally hate onions in all forms (except onion powder or onion flavored chips for some reason) I didnt realize how different they could taste when made in proper ways. I was literally eating them on their own by the spoonful because they were so good, never in my life did I expect that to ever happen. So while its prevelant in Indian dishes, it just feels like they know how to actually use them versus some plain disgusting raw onion chopped and added to like a salad or burger. Like anything there is always nuance, and that day I learned it ever applied to the eating onions lol

[–] porous_grey_matter@lemmy.ml 1 points 1 day ago

Indian food uses loads of onions

[–] Echolynx@lemmy.zip 2 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

What if I love plain sparkling water, black (loose) tea, dark chocolate, unsweetened espresso? Enjoy the taste of plain (real, not American) bread with olive oil or butter on its own? Hate food spicier than butter chicken?

Am I a super taster or the opposite? I joke that I have the palate of a medieval peasant, though I'm guessing they wouldn't have enjoyed dark chocolate or undiluted coffee/tea.

[–] KuroiKaze@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Opposite of me in almost every way lol def not a super taster

[–] Echolynx@lemmy.zip 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Lol being a super taster would be hell for me if I already feel so sensitive to taste/scent.

[–] KuroiKaze@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

Yeah I don't love it sounds like a super power when all it does is make you not like popular stuff for the most part. There is however one upside which is when I eat something truly good my soul leaves my body and I fall through space and time. I call it a taste journey. Have to be vigilant to not get super fat haha.

If you judge what other people eat

You should try: Growing the hell up

[–] mabeledo@lemmy.world 1 points 16 hours ago

I judge people for what they eat every time I put a foot in a Target.

Let’s normalize shaming adults who eat like five year olds.

If I grow any more up the doctors will think I'm addicted to viagra

I always liked onions in things. In fact I liked all things kids were supposed to hate... Except for eggplant. I just don't like eggplant.

[–] BigDiction@lemmy.world 12 points 1 day ago (3 children)

There has always been a lot of poorly cooked eggplant going around. It has a ton moisture that needs to be drawn out through salt and/or roasting and frying to make it not be mushy.

Cooked properly crispy it can be delicious.

I love onions but OP needs to fuck right off with dictating how other folks should deal with food.
