Depends on what I'm putting in. There are some plates of leftovers that I've made often enough to just know how long it'll take, so the time is exactly what it needs to be and I can wander away for a second to check the mail or whatever. Popcorn obviously comes out when it's done. If I'm warming a drink in a mug, I'll stop it early if the handle is at a more convenient angle, since otherwise I'm liable to burn myself.

[–] baronvonj@lemmy.world 1 points 1 hour ago

I'm just hit the god damn stop/cancel button if you want to stop it before the timer reaches zero.

[–] Salamanderwizard@lemmy.world 1 points 1 hour ago

If I don't stop it before the last second, the universe will blow up.

[–] CodeBlooded@programming.dev 2 points 2 hours ago* (last edited 2 hours ago)

I time it right so that I can run towards the microwave “in slow motion” and pretend I’m stopping a bomb from going off, 1 second before it blows. My kid loves it. 🤷‍♂️

[–] lickmygiggle@lemmy.world 4 points 3 hours ago (2 children)

I have kids that I enjoy keeping asleep. There is no reason for that fucking beep to ever occur.

[–] UltraGiGaGigantic@lemmy.ml 1 points 54 minutes ago (1 children)

Many models have the option to turn off the beeps

[–] rammer@sopuli.xyz 1 points 51 minutes ago

But why won't the noise turn off as soon as you open the door?

[–] laranis@lemmy.zip 3 points 3 hours ago

Nominating for best of out-of-context comments.

[–] njm1314@lemmy.world 1 points 3 hours ago

Almost always.

[–] randomcruft@lemmy.sdf.org 1 points 3 hours ago

Only when microwaving something that might overflow… like oatmeal.

Aside from that… I want every last second of microwaving that I can get and beeping!

[–] laranis@lemmy.zip 1 points 3 hours ago

Only if I'm standing across the room and my brain calculates that the time it takes to close the distance is within the time remaining on the countdown and I get to do a badass flip, twirl, and slide to stop it just in the nick of time so I get to pretend I have super hero level reflexes.

I cannot do badass flips but the point still stands. I can twirl and slide though, as long as I'm wearing socks.

[–] thirdBreakfast@lemmy.world 5 points 5 hours ago

Me in the break room stopping the microwave before the beeps:

Here future microwave user, have these free nine seconds I'm leaving you.

Me finding the timer is not cleared when I want to use the microwave:

Ugh, now I have to press the reset button before I can enter the length of time to warm my lunch. Who was the accursed person who left time on here?

[–] SayJess@lemmy.blahaj.zone 8 points 6 hours ago

I used to stop my microwave a few seconds before it finished, like many others, due to the annoying unstoppable beeps. But then I got this smaller unit that happens to let out the faintest confirmation of doneness that I ever did, or rather almost didn’t, hear. I don’t mind it now.

[–] Brotha_Jaufrey@lemmy.world 8 points 7 hours ago

I have this annoying microwave that beeps 5 times when it hits zero, even if I open the door in the middle of it. Kinda rude honestly

[–] 0xebfe@lemmy.today 6 points 8 hours ago

People who leave those few remaining seconds just hanging there for the next person to have to deal with are called “microdanglers.”

[–] gigachad@piefed.social 32 points 12 hours ago
[–] raynethackery@lemmy.world 10 points 10 hours ago

Someone at work does this and doesn't clear the remaining time. Pisses me off. Press the stop button for the love all that is holy. Look, I know it's petty.

[–] Zak@lemmy.world 37 points 15 hours ago* (last edited 7 hours ago) (1 children)

It depends on how annoying a noise it will make if allowed to finish. I find it odd that the option to disable the beep on completion isn't common. There's rarely any urgency to remove what I just heated.

[–] MumboJumbo@lemmy.world 10 points 14 hours ago

Really? First thing I do after a power outage is turn off the sound on the microwave. I'm not putting stuff in for hours, I've not forgotten about it. If I'm not taking it out of the microwave immediately it's because I'm busy. Settle down, machine.

[–] Jazsta@lemmy.world 13 points 12 hours ago (4 children)

I have my microwave on silent so I actually prefer to let it finish so I don't need to press a button to clear those few seconds to have a useful clock back

[–] TastyWheat@lemmy.world 2 points 2 hours ago

I set mine to vibrate so I feel it in my pocket when it goes off

[–] alehel@lemmy.zip 10 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

There's such a thing as a beepless microwave 😮?

[–] seralth@lemmy.world 7 points 7 hours ago (1 children)

Basically every microwave iv seen in the last 25 years has a way to turn off the beeps.

Read the manual for the shit you own. It's wild sometimes how hidden options can be.

[–] Rai@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 5 hours ago

man microwave

[–] ManaOatbun@jlai.lu 5 points 11 hours ago
[–] sjkhgsi@lemmy.world 5 points 11 hours ago (2 children)

WHAT BRAND OF MICROWAVE DO YOU HAVE?

[–] Jazsta@lemmy.world 3 points 6 hours ago

LG #1675079‌

For older ones I owned, you can open up the control panel and take out the little speaker puck as an irriversable alternative option.

[–] GreenMartian@lemmy.dbzer0.com 6 points 10 hours ago

I specifically looked online before replacing my last one – it didn't just beep, it screamed at the top of its lungs.

Now a happy owner of a silent LG microwave. (You hold two buttons simultaneously to put it in silent mode)

[–] quediuspayu@lemmy.world 4 points 10 hours ago

No, unless I want to set it up for period shorter than what is available but that hardly ever happens.

I usually leave and come back when it beeps.

[–] sunbrrnslapper@lemmy.world 23 points 15 hours ago (6 children)

Yes, regularly AND I leave the remaining time on the microwave. It's pure chaos over here.

[–] baronvonj@lemmy.world 1 points 1 hour ago

Fucking Monster.

[–] aeronmelon@lemmy.world 2 points 2 hours ago

Stay away from my family!

[–] Sc00ter@lemmy.zip 2 points 4 hours ago (1 children)

This is how my wife is. However, weve recently (6 months now) gotten a new microwave and i havent had to clear the time off once. There's no way shes changed her ways, so this must have a feature to clear remaining time after so long

[–] sunbrrnslapper@lemmy.world 1 points 3 hours ago

My husband wants this. Brand?

[–] Rai@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 5 hours ago

I mash the stop/clear button until it makes more beeps than the microwave would have made if I let the time expire.

[–] pleasestopasking@reddthat.com 9 points 13 hours ago

I am triggered, please for the love of god and anyone who lives with you JUST CLEAR IT

[–] Concave1142@lemmy.world 12 points 15 hours ago

My partner does the same thing! The amount of times I've looked at the microwave and wondered why time is standing still is too damn high!

[–] otter@lemmy.dbzer0.com 11 points 13 hours ago

I hate the beep in every form so far, and I avoid using microwaves every chance I get.

[–] RodgeGrabTheCat@sh.itjust.works 8 points 13 hours ago* (last edited 13 hours ago)

It beeps 5 times if I don't. Super fuckin annoying, are those beeps.

[–] twice_hatch@midwest.social 6 points 12 hours ago

No, if I wanted to microwave something for 57 seconds I'd put 57 seconds in. I don't practice brinksmanship

[–] TabbsTheBat@pawb.social 13 points 16 hours ago

Microwaves stop by themselves? /j

[–] andrewta@lemmy.world 7 points 14 hours ago

The beep from the microwave hurts my ears. So I stop about 1 second before it beeps.

[–] LovableSidekick@lemmy.world 2 points 11 hours ago

Only if I think I set it for too long.

[–] Melonpoly@lemmy.world 5 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

No, my microwave has a nice chime instead of a beep

[–] Ephera@lemmy.ml 6 points 14 hours ago

Mine does a singular *ding*, which is very appreciated.

[–] FRYD@sh.itjust.works 6 points 14 hours ago (3 children)

If you time it right, you can stop my microwave on 0. I also like to avoid making noise if I can. So every time I microwave anything it’s a little minigame for me.

[–] victorz@lemmy.world 8 points 14 hours ago (2 children)

Our microwave doesn't beep until like 5 seconds after finishing, it's just silent. I think that's a pretty good feature.

[–] pleasestopasking@reddthat.com 4 points 13 hours ago (1 children)

Never knew how much I needed this, holy shit. Mine beeps when it finishes but also beeps again if I haven't opened the door in, idk, some amount of time. Which I get why it's a gesture and sometimes I actually do find it useful but often I'm like "I KNOW, GIMME A MINUTE"
