I think BIOS has just morphed into meaning the firmware interface, nobody calls it UEFI. Everyone does indeed just say BIOS, which is okay. You can be more specific when it matters, which is basically never in the mass market.

Like asking for a bandaid. Everyone knows what you mean, and asking for one and getting a generic bandage isn't going to matter.
ADHESIVE MEDICAL STRIP
BIOS sounds good. It's got that cold hard logic stamped steel ring to it.
"We've got the update the BIOS". Okay. Everyone understands that.
The BIOS boots before the OS. Got it.
"Make sure to configure your UEFI"
"My what?"
Your use of "everyone" is a nice example of xkcd 2501
systemctl reboot --firmware-setup
This will cause a Linux machine to reboot directly into the UEFI. I know it's not groundbreaking but it can be really handy if you use fast-boot. At least your days of pecking the Delete key during POST will be over.
Windows does this too, though I've forgotten the method.
This will cause a Linux machine to reboot directly into the UEFI.
That's weird, on my machine it reboots me directly into the BIOS.
Sidenote: if you dualboot, I can't recommend enough setting up a desktop entry which runs this command:
systemctl reboot --boot-loader-entry=auto-windows
It's basically a one-click Windows launcher.
I tried it but nothing happened. Mainly because I wouldn't let Windows touch bare metal anymore for anything.
I pronounce it the way I was taught when earning my A+ cert ten years ago, "you-fee". This is how I've always heard it pronounced by other professionals. The only time I've heard it pronounced differently is by non-professionals.
That being said, I still use the term "BIOS" when referring to "the firmware interface" for the simple fact that if you call it a UEFI and it's a BIOS, someone will smugly correct you. Other way around, nobody bats an eye.
This breaks down for professionals that are self taught though. For example, I still to this day, say in my head "F-Stab " for fstab, instead of "F-S-Tab", and various other terms I learned when i was learning linux myself when I was 13. Didn't understand at the time that it stood for filesystems table, so f-stab is how I pronounced the term in my head. In the UEFI case, I'll just pronounce each letter at a time, U-E-F-I.
Give it time. "tracert" used to be "tray-cert" in my mind for the longest.
Its been over 20 years, lol f-stab ain't going anywhere.
U-E-F-I You ain’t got no alibi You ugly Eh! Hey! You ugly!
Ideally, I pronounce it "Libreboot."
I say "yoofee", but it hasn't mattered so far because I'm pretty sure I've never actually said it to anyone.
I work close to firmware and this is how we all say it, and we say it often. When speaking to execs it's always said by pronouncing each letter. You can watch us code shift (lingually) in meetings depending on who is asking the question.
U-E-F-I
You Aint Got No Alibi
meanwhile flashing the bios is still called flashing the bios
ÜFI
fuck UEFI, it was a solution to a problem that Microsoft and all the tech oligopolies made up.

In French we just say UEFI.
(ok without joke, we say it letters by letters, they all sound different)
Uweee Eff Aye I met a girl online that literally called it Uni Extee Feee because it rhymed and sounded better to her and it drove the other techs she knew crazy.
Covfefe
It's the initializer for the bootloader for the bootstrapper for the initializer for the service manager.
…how did we get there?
When describing the boot process, bios. When configuring some CPU or memory setting, bios. When talking about some specific boot menu config, uefi.
Doesn't a UEFI provide a system for basic input and output?
So by that metric, isn't a UEFI, by default, also a BIOS?
I say the letters U-E-F-I but often say BIOS interchangeably
This used to bother me back when the distinction was meaningful and both options were possible. These days it’s like saying “Velcro” for hook-and-loop tape.
UEFI is a BIOS
