"As revolutionaries, we don't have the right to say that we're tired of explaining. We must never stop explaining. We also know that when the people understand, they cannot but follow us. In any case, we, the people, have no enemies when it comes to peoples. Our only enemies are the imperialist regimes and organizations." Thomas Sankara, 1985

I saw an interview with I think Finkelstein when Mamdani was just elected. He said that a true socialist elect would be accountable to its socialist party. They would have to have regular meetings where the elected is fully transparent over their activities and lets the democratic process of the party decide over major decisions. Instead Mamdani is doing backroom deals and not being transparent about the pressure he is facing from either side thus making decisions that no one understands which is killing the movement that got him elected.

Well, Mamdani is from the Democratic Party after all. He is loyal to the Liberal Democrats.

[–] Salah@hexbear.net 17 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Yes but he’s also DSA, if the democratic party is the vessel that DSA wants to use to get people elected, then DSA elects must still be accountable to the DSA.

Just stepping stone for Liberals. When will you all learn there's no Left in the US?

[–] Salah@hexbear.net 3 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Very insightful commentary

[–] 666@lemmygrad.ml 7 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (2 children)

I mean, it's sensible. The "left" in the United States is defunct or heavily co-opted by opportunists, trots spits and literal CIA parties (CPUSA).

Even then, the remaining of those with principles are then split further on either they believe in complete liberation or fall into the "Lassalle" crowd. I would have more hope for the JCP to re-radicalize after their current prime minister plunges the country into austerity than any actual "real movement" in the imperial core.

Does it mean you should stop trying? No. Doesn't change material reality or that they are settlers and their interests lay there, though.

[–] Salah@hexbear.net 4 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

I agree with all of the criticisms and I don’t have a stake in it since I don’t live in the US. But I will criticise any comment that does not offer any actual analysis and just functions to demotivate people who are trying build a movement.

There's no space for monsters in the Left, that's all. The blood of all the people killed by them could cover a continent.

People tell me to not be an "idealist" and think "materially".

People who were compradors or served under the apparatus dedicated to crushing dissent or murdering it overseas are not to be trusted because they have demonstrated they have and can still sell out their morals and values to the highest bidder; something a lot of settlers struggle with.

There's material thought.

[–] SocialistVibes01@lemmy.ml 2 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

Then you have to take into account what Lemmy truly is: a bunch of """progressive""" Anglos larping as commies while patting themselves on the back: "monsters of my ilk have committed a crime against humanity yet again but we'll do better the next time. We totes promise.Just be nice to us and them." The """"material conditions"""" don't dictate otherwise, amirite?

[–] SocialistVibes01@lemmy.ml 1 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

Exactly, only an idiot would call them comrades before at least two generations of purge and compulsory reeducation.

These guys were pretty amazing in the past, we need them back on their feet.

When you learn to have better theory takes. Womp womp. Or until you stop crashing out when receiving the most minor of pushback

Mamdani pisses me off so much, he has killed off most of the radical potential that could have come through his campaign and he has fucking betrayed Palestine. The only positive I see of his victory remaining is that thousands of people who supported him may come to recognise he is too moderate and go further left due to that. I can kind of see that happening already, the only question is to what extent does that happen.

The crushing of hope is so much worse than making it clear you will be shit when in office and being shit. And I cannot fathom how influencers who call themselves leftists, or even communists are still supporting him. People who aren't that knowledgeable on politics and in some left-liberal echochamber I can somewhat excuse for being 'baby socialists' and mainly only seeing pro-Mamdani content, but those like Hasan, Deprogram boys, Novara Media I cannot fucking excuse for not completely removing any support for him because they really, really should know better by this point regardless of whatever you could specifically consider them to be ideologically at this point.

Zohran Mamdani, the moderate removed of fascism. Fuck you.

Sorry for angry rant.

edit: I called him the word that rhymes with runt, I did not know that was banned here, bloody americans.

Democratic Sellouts of Amerikkka (DSA) strike again.

Jokes on you succdems were never a part of the anti-imperialist movement, but an integral part of the imperialism for manufacturing consent!

[–] demeritum@lemmygrad.ml 21 points 2 weeks ago

There is no force pushing elected officials left. One day protests and snarky twitter comments aren’t pressure-building enough. Meanwhile the zionists and capitalists have A LOT of incentives to pressure elected officials to the right.

So all the talk of pipelines and normalization of socialism is BS, sorry you wasted over a decade when you could’ve built something that could withstand, a little bit at least, the epoch of fascism.

[–] Emmi@lemmygrad.ml 21 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

but hey, at least the "socialists" got their meager treats like slightly cheaper stuff.

[–] RedPartisan@lemmygrad.ml 14 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

They hardly even got that, the bourgoise couldn't even tolerate him opening six state owned grocery stores!

[–] Emmi@lemmygrad.ml 10 points 2 weeks ago

Funny how defensive they got over that, acting like that was the biggest victory ever.

[–] deathtoreddit@lemmygrad.ml 18 points 2 weeks ago

As the saying goes in D**tsch:

Wer hat uns verraten? Sozialdemokraten

Who has betrayed us? Social democrats

[–] algeriansocialist@lemmygrad.ml 8 points 2 weeks ago

The only way that socialists in the US can properly agitate while participating in elections is through a principled working class party, using the democratic party as a vessel means your "socialist" (in truth socdem lol) politicians will be either sucked into the vortex of bourgeois politics and become impotent (and this is assuming that are truly well meaning), or become opportunists who used the socialist framing to acquire power and then sell out. But not my mayor he is a good guy!
