President signed the legislation championed by late senator Lindsey Graham last month but has waived the restrictions as they were due to come into effect

Maybe "the West" no longer exists. There's just the US and then there's Europe, and each of them is doing their own thing.

Article III, Section 3, Clause 1:

Treason against the United States, shall consist only in levying War against them, or in adhering to their Enemies, giving them Aid and Comfort. No Person shall be convicted of Treason unless on the testimony of two Witnesses to the same overt Act, or on Confession in open Court.

Impeach and convict.

I hate that everyone is just letting this guy walk all over the constitution. At any time they could stop him, but they don't want too no matter how much they say they do.

They created this monster, and they are stuck with the consequences regardless of whether they want it or not. Obligatory fuck neoliberals too, and Gavin Newsom in particular.

[–] Doomsider@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Woah now, are you seriously asking Congress to do their job and govern? When they can just sit around and collect all that sweet ~~bribe~~ lobby money. They want this executive fiat to make their lives easier. The whole government has been heading this way for a long time.

They created this monster and we are stuck with the consequences.

Newsom seems more sensible than Trump. Presumably if Newsom does win the presidency in 2028 then he would be more supportive of Ukraine, like Biden was.

[–] NocturnalMorning@lemmy.world 6 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

Yeah, well, he just backed a measure to kill the billionaire tax in California, and took it a step further trying to make it illegal to make other billionaire taxes. Fuck that guy, if he makes it to the general election, I will vote for him, but I will not forget that he's a billionaire stooges.

We need real progressives, not fucking neoliberals in sheep's skin, or we will get Trump 2.0 one day and it will be even worse than it is now. People want real change, not another Joe Biden, or Obama.

We got MAGA because people are ignoring the working people's plight, and acting like the world is all hunky dory, and we aren't killing the planet under a capitalist system rigged against anybody not rich.

But, I will hold my nose and vote for him if he makes it to the general bcz I'd rather not go full Hitler. We already might get that. 🤷‍♂️

[–] FrogCat@piefed.social 1 points 9 hours ago (1 children)

I think I read some time ago that Newsom's argument is that a national billionaire tax would be better and more effective than a California billionaire tax.

But yeah maybe he should just support both: a California tax and a national tax.

It is pretty obscene that billionaires can spend nearly limitless money trying to defeat a proposal for them to pay just a little bit more in tax; a tax which could save the lives of the most disadvantaged people in society.

[–] NocturnalMorning@lemmy.world 1 points 7 hours ago (1 children)

Yeah, well, too little too late. He also passed a ban on 3D printing. I don't remember the specifics of it, but it was something to do with ghost guns, but we all know the real purpose is to prevent people from making replacement parts for their stuff. Right to repair is so fucked, and he's made it worse for no reason.

There are a lot of reasons to hate the guy even though he's done some decent stuff.

I don't just blindly support candidates, and I never will. I want a Mamdani to run for president, and congress. We need people who actually care. Not people who just want power. The entire world is lurching right now bcz of the manipulated online discourse, and our idiot neoliberal polices from the past 40-50 years. It's like clock work, the generation that experienced fascism dies, so we decided, maybe let's try it again. Maybe it'll work this time.

[–] FrogCat@piefed.social 1 points 7 hours ago

Fair points. I'm British not American, so I'm sure you know a lot more about Newsom than I do. I've seen a couple of interviews with him but that's about it.

If 2028 is Newsom vs Vance and Newsom wins, I would hope that would improve the world. Maybe a Democrat who more boldly stands up for ordinary (non-wealthy) people would be better, but whether they'd get enough support from Middle America to win the presidency, I don't know.

Remember when this guy said no one was tougher on Russia than him? Oh Lordy, and his base just ate it up.

[–] BlindPenguin@piefed.social 30 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Well, he didn't specify what part of him was tougher on Russia. Some lube was required.

[–] radiofreebc@lemmy.world 12 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Trump is not the top in this partnership. He is definitely the bottom.

Maybe that's the real reason he has to wear diapers

Trump instigated the situation to justify doing this. Period.

It was always going to end this way because Putin ordered it, and he has enough video on Trump and his billionaire pals to get what he wants.

If only Epstein had lived long enough to see what power he still wields in this world— wars, fascism, racism, genocide—can all be laid at his feet because rich people like to rape enslaved women & children and therefore the tapes exist. What a proud moment for Epstein.

[–] FrogCat@piefed.social 23 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Maybe Putin doesn't need video of Trump. Maybe Trump's admiration of dictators like Putin is all Putin needs to get Trump to do the Kremlin's bidding.

[–] Wildmimic@anarchist.nexus 14 points 2 days ago

It's both. I am sure that the ex-KGB man Putin has more dirt on Trump than you could fit into all of Mar-a-Lago's bathrooms. And Trump wished he were smart enough to really be a dictator (just as he always tried to be accepted in NY and failing miserably), making him all buddy-buddy with his (smarter, actually "competent") autocrats and dictators (who laugh behind his back and use him just like the tool he is).

[–] Prior_Industry@lemmy.world 6 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

Trumps also up to his ears in Russian mob money from his real estate days.

[–] ChunkMcHorkle@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Very true, and much more than any of us even know yet. But his real estate days are not over: he is still "doing deals" involving his properties from the Oval Office.

And lest anyone ever forget, the basic facts of Gaza are these:

Trump: developer
Gaza: land now almost fully cleared for development

Interesting how that has been working out for him.

[–] YouTalkinToMe@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

He really took aggressive real estate development to the next level. Why use Caterpillar when you can use Mk84's to prepare the area. I'm surprised he didn't sell Israel some B-52's yet.

[–] douglasg14b@lemmy.world 30 points 2 days ago (1 children)

So the executive branch, exercising power it literally doesn't have to exercise?

[–] JustPlainDave@lemmy.zip 19 points 2 days ago (3 children)

I mean, they've been doing that for 2 years.

Yeh, there seems to be an effort to dismantle both the EU, US, and any western agreements like five eyes. There have been other times when men gathered in a room and carved up the world.... I wasn't thinking it be in my lifetime when this is attempted again.

[–] Wildmimic@anarchist.nexus 16 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

I would have NO objections at all regarding dismantling of the Five Eyes - this surveillance shit can get fucked.

I have mild objections regarding dismantling of NATO - as a defensive pact it fulfills an important role, but it might be superceded by something not dependent on the increasingly unstable US and that would be fine.

I have massive objections regarding dismantling of the EU - this is the largest economic and peace project Europe has ever seen, and has brought prosperity all over the continent. I have my gripes with its structure - the EU Parliament needs more tools, and the Commission needs less (the commission is an completely undemocratic blob in the middle of an otherwise pretty democratic structure, as seen with the commissions regular push for spying on citizens), and also we have to change the rules which need 100% of countries to agree in general, because it causes everything to be soooo slow (and easily disrupted by outside forces), but in general the EU is a pretty successful project.

The good thing is - all european states KNOW that the EU is needed nowadays. We can't realistically go back into a time where a small land mass as we are is splintered into scores of small pieces.

[–] yucandu@lemmy.world 9 points 2 days ago (1 children)

The problem with the EU is that it proves democracy, and giving power to working class people, can work. Which is a huge threat to Putin and the CCP.

As Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa (ex-president of Portugal) once said: Trump is a Russian asset.

United States need to get rid of him, fast.

[–] potter2010@lemmy.ca 6 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (4 children)

I think Canada still exists.....

While it's not the same economic power or population, it shouldn't be left off the list.

Edit: hit send too early.
